Rembrandt (1936) Laughton This character study joins the painter at the height of his fame in 1642, when his adored wife suddenly dies and his work takes a dark, sardonic turn that offends his patrons. By 1656, he is bankrupt but consoles himself with the company of pretty maid Hendrickje, whom he's unable to marry. Their relationship brings ostracism but also some measure of happiness. The final scenes find him in his last year, 1669, physically enfeebled but his spirit undimmed. The great man, conductor and genius Willem Mengelberg speaks about Beethoven, Rembrandt and Tchaikovsky. The interview was made in Munich in 1936 during a rehearsal of Tchaikovsky's 5th. TEDxAmsterdam 2010 trailer
Earlier this year, we asked Amsterdam-based creative production studio +1 to help us create the trailer for this year’s TEDxAmsterdam event.
We wanted to play with the notion of light as the western symbol 'an idea', and together we created a story which is about building, refining and unleashing your ideas. It is all set, of course, against the beautiful backdrop of the city of Amsterdam.
The climax takes place at this year's venue, the Amsterdam Stadsschouwburg.
Amsterdam and The Netherlands are synonymous with light; many of the famous 17th century Dutch painters (Rembrandt for instance, and later Vermeer in the 19th century) remarked on the ethereal quality of light in the Netherlands, and indeed it was this fact that brought many other painters to the country throughout the period.
Ideas are, of course, a central part of TEDxAmsterdam, as is the city itself, and Amsterdam has many 'light-related' destinations – including on the bikes for which the city is also known, and which play a central role in our story.
This year's TEDxAmsterdam will be held in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. On the 30th November 2010, this grand city theater will provide a stage for the new ideas of bold thinkers and innovators in the fields of technology, entertainment, design, art, science and business. The common theme of the presentations will be “Science and Fiction”.

Young & Free
September 10th-October 22nd, 2011
Young & Free will be the most significant exhibition by Australian street artists ever seen in the United States. The show will feature fresh work by thirteen of Australia’s finest urban art guerrillas – from the already internationally acclaimed to the burgeoning up-and-comers.This tribe of artists comes from a variety of backgrounds: brilliant new work by notorious 80’s train painters through to the sublime subtlety of a modern day Rembrandt armed with a spray can. Young & Free is a reflection of Australia’s thriving street culture with a strong grounding in the past and a firm focus on the future. These are modern day bushrangers, patrolling the lanes from Melbourne to Manhattan. This show features a mix of direct sprays, stencils and paste-ups, representing the rich and varied groundings from which these artists have grown. No matter their age, medium or style, the Young & Free artists all share one thing in common: they want to give the urban landscape a fresh coat of paint.

Puccini / Maria Cebotari / Marcel Wittrisch, 1940s: Si mi chiamano Mimi (In German)
Maria Cebotari (1910-1949) and Marcel Wittrisch (1901-1955) perform the duet from La Boheme. Felix Prohaska leads the Vienna Philharmonic, and Josef Krips, the London Philharmonic. This recording dates to the early 1940s; the 10 inch LP you see above was manufactured in Germany in 1958. Hermann Marcel Wittrisch (* 1. Oktober 1903 in Antwerpen; † 3. Jahrhunderts.
