Can urban areas be sustainable?
Ever wonder if urban areas can be attractive, functional and sustainable? Find out how University of Auckland researcher, Dr Marjorie van Roon, is investigating how to construct and operate ecologically functional urban areas. By planning communities where water cycles operate naturally, ecological processes are accommodated, contaminant runoff and flooding are minimised, and habitats are protected or re-created, we can protect our nation's biodiversity while ensuring our lifestyle is more sustainable.

Bangkok - Thailand
Bangkok is the capital, largest urban area and primary city of Thailand. Known in Thai as Krung Thep Mahanakhon , or Krung Thep for short, it was a small trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It came to the forefront of Siam when it was given the status as the capital city in 1768 after the burning of Ayutthaya. However, the current Rattanakosin Kingdom did not begin until 1782 when the capital was moved across the river by Rama I after the death of King Taksin. The Rattanakosin capital is now more formally called "Phra Nakhon", pertaining to the ancient boundaries in the metropolis' core and the name Bangkok now incorporates the urban build-up since the 18th century which has its own public administration and governor. In the span of over two hundred years, Bangkok has grown to become the political, social and economic center of not only Thailand but for Indochina and Southeast Asia. Its influence in the arts, politics, fashion, education and entertainment as well as being a business, financial and cultural center of Asia has given Bangkok the status of a global city. Bangkok has a population of approximately 6355144 residents while the greater Bangkok area has a population of 11971000 (January 2008). This has in turn shifted the country from being a rather homogeneous Thai population to an increasingly vibrant mix of Western, Indian and Chinese people, giving the city a cosmopolitan status. The capital is part of the heavily ...

Long Term Confinement Area For Puppies By Urban Dog Training
When you are unable to supervise your puppy because you're physically or MENTALLY absent, it's best to confine them somewhere safe where no harm can come to them or to your belongings. This sets your puppy up for success since unsupervised access to any part of your home -- indoors or outdoors -- provides too many opportunities for you puppy to make bad choices and house training (potty training mistakes). Turning Urban Lumber (Turning Green Wood)
Every day, in urban areas, trees are cut down for various reasons. These trees are a veritable treasure trove of lumber that can be reclaimed, as opposed to finding its way to the junk yard or fireplace. As well, many of the species of wood growing locally in your area may be otherwise unavailable from lumber suppliers. This episode covers the steps required to reclaim such wood for turning.

Distilled Demographics: Urbanization
A few years ago, it was announced that half the world's population now lives in urban areas. When we think of urbanization, we tend to think of sprawling cities with skyscrapers. However, the definition of "urban" varies greatly from country to country. In this video, PRB senior demographer Carl Haub, discusses the global diversity of "urban" areas and the implications of a more urban world. "Distilled Demographics," PRB's video series, highlights key demographic concepts such as fertility, mortality, and migration. Through these short videos, you can learn demography's real-world application and impact. "These videos not only show that demography can be exciting, but also highlight how population trends and issues affects the well-being of us all," says Carl Haub, senior demographer PRB. "Fertility, mortality, and migration—along with other demographic issues—play a major role in determining what kind of opportunities and challenges people face in their communities and countries." Have a question or comment for Carl? Email him at askprb@prb.org. PRB informs people around the world about population, health and the environment, and empowers them to use that information to advance the well-being of current and future generations. TOEFL writing test 2 3
This video contains TWO complete sample writing tests. In the real TOEFL, you will only have to write TWO ESSAYS, not FOUR. HERE IS TEXT 1 (You have 3 minutes to read it and take notes) In response to a change in the way companies expect their employees to do their work, schools have begun to focus more on group work. Students are now expected to complete projects as a team, rather than simply demonstrate individual knowledge on a test. This shift toward teamwork is a good development. The biggest advantage of having a group of people tackle a problem is that the solution is likely to be found much more quickly. Every person in the world has unique skills and abilities. When a group of people is assembled, each persons special ability can contribute to the ability of the team. Moreover, breaking a large project into smaller, more manageable pieces makes the work get done much more quickly. Secondly, teamwork encourages individuals to try out bold new ideas and this produces better and more creative results. As the saying goes, Two heads are better than one. When a group of people come up with more varied ideas and combine those ideas, they can produce a more original and creative result Moreover there is less likely to be an unsolvable issue when many brains are working on a problem from various angles. This means that teamwork often leads to a better, more creative outcome than individual work does. Strangely enough, being a member of a team can actually encourage ...

Rural China "Children Left Behind" Documentary (part 1 of 3)
UNICEF Awarded "Children Left Behind" in Rural China Documentary "They have parents, but they live very lonely lives. They eat alone, they play alone." Producer: Catherine Lee Yuk San "Children Left Behind", a 30-minute documentary, chronicles the lives of children who are "left behind" in the villages of rural China, when their parents migrate to urban areas in search of work. As part of China's economic boom, it is estimated that over 120 million rural migrants have moved to urban areas to work in factories and construction. A new phenomenon in China, the number of children "left behind" is now estimated to be over 22 million. Although it is their basic right to have their parent's love, concern and care, in reality you can see that they live like an orphan.
