Mitte is the first and most central borough of Berlin. It was created in Berlin's 2001 administrative reform by the merger of the former districts of Mitte proper, Tiergarten and Wedding; the resulting borough retained the name Mitte. It is one of the two boroughs (beside Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg) which comprises former West and East Berlin districts. Mitte encompasses Berlin's historic core and includes some of the most important tourist sites of Berlin like Museum Island, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Potsdamer Platz, the Reichstag and Berlin Hauptbahnhof, most of which were in former East Berlin.

Note that when Berliners speak of Mitte, they usually refer to the smaller locality and not to the larger borough.

Geography[link]

Mitte (German for "middle", "centre") is located in the centre of Berlin along the Spree River. It borders on Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in the west, Reinickendorf in the north, Pankow in the east, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in the southeast, and Tempelhof-Schöneberg in the southwest.

In the middle of the Spree lies Museum Island (Museumsinsel) with its museums and Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom). The central square in Mitte is Alexanderplatz with the prominent Fernsehturm (TV tower), Germany's highest building, and the large railway station with connections to many subway (U-Bahn), tramway (Straßenbahn), city trains (S-Bahn) and buses. There are some important streets which connect Mitte with the other boroughs, e.g. the boulevard Unter den Linden which connects Alexanderplatz to the west with Brandenburg Gate and runs further as Straße des 17. Juni to the Victory Column and the centre of former West Berlin in Charlottenburg, or Karl-Marx-Allee from Alexanderplatz to Friedrichshain and the eastern suburbs.

History[link]

The former Mitte district had been established by the 1920 Greater Berlin Act and comprised large parts of the historic city around Alt-Berlin and Cölln. Brandenburg Gate was the western exit at the Berlin city boundary until 1861.

Between 1961 and 1990, Mitte was the central part of East Berlin, however at the same time it was surrounded by the Berlin Wall at its north, south and west. There were some border control points, the most famous of which was Checkpoint Charlie between Kreuzberg and Mitte, which was operated by the United States Army and its allies and was open to foreigners and diplomats. Two other checkpoints were at Heinrich-Heine-Straße/Prinzenstraße east of Checkpoint Charlie, open to citizens of West Germany and West Berlin and on Invalidenstraße in the north on the border with the West Berlin Tiergarten district (the present-day Moabit locality).

Demographics[link]

As of 2010, the district had a population of 322,919, of whom 144.000 (44.5%) had a migration background. In the former West Berlin areas of Wedding, Gesundbrunnen and Moabit, foreigners and Germans of foreign origin compose nearly 70% of the population, while in Mitte proper the share of migrants is relatively low. The immigrant community is quite diverse, however, Middle Easterners (e.g. Turks, Arabs etc.), Africans, Eastern Europeans and East Asians form the largest groups.^[1]

Roy Frank “RJ” Mitte III (born August 21, 1992) is an American actor best known for his role as Walter White Jr. on the AMC television series, Breaking Bad.^[1]

Similar to his role on Breaking Bad, Mitte has mild cerebral palsy.^[1][2] When he moved to Hollywood in 2006, he began training with personal talent manager Addison Witt who also has a form of the condition.^[3]

Biography[link]

RJ Mitte was born in August 1992 in Lafayette, Louisiana and moved with his family in 2006 to Los Angeles, where his younger sister Lacianne Carriere had received an offer for a role in a film project. After receiving several smaller extras roles, including in the Disney series Hannah Montana, his interest aroused in the film industry and he decided to take acting lessons. Shortly after, he was offered the role of Walter White, Jr., who also has cerebral palsy in the AMC series Breaking Bad.

In 2011 he played a leading role in the horror short film "Stump". That same year he acted as executive producer of the documentary Vanished: The Tara Calico story that deals with the disappearance of the American Tara Calico, missing in New Mexico since 1988.

Mitte is the campaign's spokesman of "Inclusion in the Arts and Media of Performers With Disabilities (PWD I AM)", which employs disabled artists.

Manny Marc (born 1980 in Tempelhof, Berlin, Germany as Marc Schneider),^[1] is a German rapper and DJ. Manny Marc is the DJ of the South Berlin rap group Bass Crew,^[2] which consists of Frauenarzt, MC Basstard, and MC Bogy. In 1997 he founded the street gang Berlin Crime, with Frauenarzt, and in 1998 the independent label Bassboxxx.^[2] In 2006 he founded with Frauenarzt the Ghetto Musik label.

Aaron Michael Paul^[1] (born August 27, 1979) is an Emmy Award winning American actor and singer. After appearing in several roles in American television, including a recurring role on the HBO series Big Love, Paul came to prominence in 2008 for his critically acclaimed role in the AMC series Breaking Bad as Jesse Pinkman. Paul won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in the series.

Paul was born Aaron Paul Sturtevant in Emmett, Idaho. He attended Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho.

Early in his career, Paul starred in videos for the band Korn, for their song "Thoughtless", and Everlast, for his song "White Trash Beautiful".^[2] He was also featured in television commercials for Juicy Fruit^[3] and Corn Pops.^[4]

Paul has appeared in the films Whatever It Takes (2000), Help! I'm a Fish (2001) (voice only), K-PAX (2001), MTV's TV Movie Wasted (2002), National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002), Perfect Opposites (2004), Bad Girls From Valley High (2005), Choking Man (2006), Mission: Impossible III (2006), The Last House on the Left (2009) among others. He also starred in the 2010 web released Funny or Die short Weird: The Al Yankovic Story as "Weird Al" Yankovic.^[5] Smashed, a film in which Paul stars, will be one of the official selections for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.^[6]

Paul has also made guest appearances on television shows such as The Guardian, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, ER, Sleeper Cell, Veronica Mars, The X-Files, Ghost Whisperer, Criminal Minds, Bones and 3rd Rock from the Sun (season 4, episode 24).

His recurring character "Scott Quittman" on HBO's Big Love appeared 14 times over the show's five seasons.

In 2008, Paul began playing Jesse Pinkman on AMC's Breaking Bad. His character was originally planned to die during the first season, but after seeing the chemistry between Paul and series star Bryan Cranston series creator Vince Gilligan changed his mind, modified the original plans, and saved the character.^[7]

Paul had an opportunity to work with Cranston prior to Breaking Bad, having auditioned for the role of Francis, the eldest son of Cranston's Malcolm in the Middle character.^[8]

Personal life[link]

He is now engaged to Lauren Parsekian, who is the founder of the Kind Campaign. He proposed in Paris on December 31, 2011.

Paul and Parsekian reside in Santa Monica, California.
