Nokia Siemens Networks B.V. is a multinational data networking and telecommunications equipment company headquartered in Espoo, Finland and a joint venture between Nokia of Finland and Siemens of Germany. It is the world's fourth-largest telecoms equipment manufacturer measured by 2011 revenues (after Ericsson, Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent).^[2] Nokia Siemens Networks has operations in around 150 countries.^[3]

History[link]

The company was created as the result of a joint venture between Siemens Communications division (minus its Enterprise business unit) and Nokia's Network Business Group. The formation of the company was publicly announced on 19 June 2006.^[4] Nokia Siemens Networks was officially launched at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona in February 2007.^[5] Nokia Siemens Networks then began full operations on 1 April 2007^[6] and has its headquarters in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. In January 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks acquired Israeli company Atrica, a company that builds carrier-class Ethernet transport systems for metro networks. The official release did not disclose terms, however they are thought to be in the region of $100 million.^[7][8] In February 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks acquired Apertio, Bristol UK-based, a mobile network customer management tools provider for €140 million. With this acquisition Nokia Siemens Networks gained customers in the subscriber management area including Orange, T-Mobile, O₂, Vodafone and Hutchison 3G.^[9][10][11] On July 19, 2010, Nokia Siemens Networks announced it would acquire the wireless-network equipment division of Motorola.^[12] The acquisitions was completed on April 29, 2011 for US $975 million in cash. As part of the transaction pproximately 6,900 employees transferred to Nokia Siemens Networks.

On November 23, 2011, Nokia Siemens announced that it planned to eliminate 17,000 jobs by the end of 2013 to enable Nokia Siemens to refocus on mobile broadband equipment, the fastest-growing segment of the market. The reductions will slash the company’s work force by 23 percent from its current level of 74,000. The cuts follow Nokia Siemens’s $1.2 billion purchase of Motorola’s mobile network equipment business in July 2010, which added staff; and would help the company trim annual operating expenses by $1.35 billion by the end of 2013.^[13][14]

Nokia Siemens Networks operates in more than 150 countries worldwide and has about 73,000 employees including the joinees from Motorola Net.^[15] Most of those employees work in one of the six central hubs around the world, including: Espoo in Finland, Munich in Germany, Wrocław in Poland, Chennai and Bangalore in India, Guangdong in China and Lisbon in Portugal. Its major manufacturing sites are in Chennai in India, China, Oulu in Finland,^{[citation needed]} and in Berlin, Germany.^[16]

About a quarter of the world's population are connected everyday using NSN infrastructure.^[15] The customer base of Nokia Siemens Networks includes 1,400 customers in over 150 countries (including more than 600 operator customers). Combined 2010 revenues exceed € 12.7 billion, making the company one of the largest telecommunication equipment makers in the world.^[17]

Rajeev Suri is the current Chief Executive Officer of Nokia Siemens Networks. In this position he succeeds Simon Beresford-Wylie, who stepped down (October 1, 2009) after leading the company’s integration.^[18] Nokia Siemens Networks' Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is Marco Schröter. The Chairman of the board of directors is now Jesper Ovesen, previous chairman was Nokia's former CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, vice chairman is Rudi Lamprecht (Executive Advisor to the CEO of Siemens AG).^[19], ^[20]. In March 2012, Samih Elhage was appointed as Chief Operating Officer, reporting to Rajeev Suri.^[21]

Iran monitoring controversy[link]

In 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks provided Iran's monopoly telecom company TCI with technology that allowed it to monitor phone calls of its customers.^[23]

News reports claimed that the company had provided internet censorship capabilities to the Iranian government.^[24] In June 2009 Nokia Siemens Networks stated that whilst they had provided lawful interception capable equipment or services to Iran, capable of monitoring local voice calls, they had not provided equipment or services that provided deep packet inspection capabilities, speech recognition, internet or network monitoring or web censorship capabilities.^[25]

In July 2009, Iranians sympathetic to the 2009–2010 Iranian election protests began to boycott Nokia products in Iran.^[26]

Former Nokia executive Chip Pitts has said that issues are raised from the supply of a voice monitoring capability to Iran by Nokia Siemens Networks.^{[when?][citation needed]} In September 2010 Nokia-Siemens stated that it halted work relating to call monitoring in Iran in 2009, having divested its call monitoring business in the same year. It also had limited its activities in Iran and stated that it was ".. aware of credible reports that the Iranian authorities use communications technology to suppress political activity in a way that is inconsistent with that government’s human rights obligations".^[27]

China Mobile Limited (simplified Chinese: 中国移动通信; traditional Chinese: 中國移動通信; pinyin: Zhōngguó Yídòng Tōngxìn) is a Chinese state-owned^[5] telecommunication company that provides mobile voice and multimedia services^[6] through its nationwide mobile telecommunications network.^[2] The company is the largest mobile telecommunications company by market capitalization.^[7] It is listed on both the NYSE and the Hong Kong stock exchange.^[2]

As of January 2012, China Mobile is the world's largest mobile phone operator with about 655 million subscribers.^[8]

A state-owned enterprise directly controlled by the government of the People's Republic of China^[5] and also a public company that is listed on the NYSE and the Hong Kong stock exchanges,^[2] China Mobile has dominated Chinese mobile services since its inception. As of 2010 China Mobile controls the vast majority of its domestic mobile services market with a 70% market share.^[9] China Unicom and China Telecom have 20% and 10% shares, respectively.^[9]

Incorporated in 1997 as China Telecom (Hong Kong) Limited,^[1] China Mobile was born from the 1999 break-up of China Telecom.^[10] (This company continues to provide mobile services, however.^[9])

State control[link]

China Mobile likely enjoys substantial protectionist benefits from China's government,^[11] but also experiences frequent government intervention in its business affairs.^[12] Government control is maintained through a presumably government-owned holding company, China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC), that owns 100 percent ownership of China Mobile (HK) Group Limited,^[13] which in turn holds over seventy percent ownership of China Mobile–the remainder being controlled by public investors.^[2] Established in 2000,^[13] CMCC is China Mobile Ltd's current parent company.^[14]

China Mobile has historically held a greater share of the rural market than competitors.^[16] By 2006, its network had expanded to provide reception for 97% of the Chinese population,^[17] and the company has since seen a sustained stream of new, rural mobile customers.^[16]

China Mobile also offers information services targeted at the rural market, including the Agricultural Information Service, which allows a variety of activities to take place through the use of mobile phones and the Internet. These include the sale and purchase of agricultural products, access to market prices for produce, wire transfers, bank withdrawals and payments, etc.^[18]

Overseas activities[link]

China Mobile expanded overseas in 2007 with the purchase of Paktel in Pakistan^[19] launching the ZONG brand there a year later.^[20]

Domestic acquisitions[link]

In May 2008, the company took over China Tietong, a fixed-line telecom^[21] and the then third-largest broadband ISP in China,^[22] adding Internet services to its core business of mobile services.

Network[link]

China Mobile operates a GSM network,^[23] which encompasses all 31 provinces, autonomous regions and directly administered municipalities in Mainland China and includes Hong Kong, too.^[2] GPRS is utilized for data transmission.^[24]

3G

The company controls 70% of the Chinese mobile market, but a far smaller percentage of the 3G market.^[9] As of May 2012, its nearly 60 million 3G subscribers account for roughly 9% of its total subscriber base,^[25] which is an increase from 3% in 2010.^[9]

Its 3G network, still under construction in 2010, utilizes the TD-SCDMA standard,^[26] which China Mobile helped develop. 3G service is available in all of the 4 direct-controlled municipalities and most of the 283 prefecture-level cities in China as of 2010.^[26]

4G

As of 2010, China Mobile has debuted small-scale 4G demonstration networks using a variant of 3GPP Long Term Evolution, TD-LTE, and has plans for larger, city-wide demonstration networks in the future.^[26] As of May 2012, such networks are in operation.^[25]

While prior iPhone models couldn't use the China Mobile network because it relies on a China-only 3G standard, talks to carry the as-yet-unreleased 4G Apple iPhone began in mid-2012.^[25]

In 2003 and again in 2007, China Mobile provided mobile services on Mount Everest.^[27]

Spratly Isles coverage

In May 2011, China Mobile announced its network now includes the controversial Spratly Islands.^[28]

Products

In April 2012, China Mobile revealed a 4G network based car device at the Beijing Auto Show. The device was developed by China Mobile's research institute and China's automobile designer CH Auto Technology Corporation. It features navigation, real time traffic, remote vehicle diagnostics and vehicle rescue. In addition, the device supports group calls, as well as vehicle wi-fi hot spots. [1] ^[29]
