Sharia Law Replaces Civil Law in Poor Indonesian Islands - Lewis Simmons
Complete video at: fora.tv Lewis M. Simons, journalist and co-author of The Next Front, tells of how Sharia law has supplanted constitutional law in some remote Indonesian islands. The poverty stricken residents have allowed Muslim clerics to collaborate with military and police officials to enforce the Islamic religious law. ----- With his co-author, Senator Christopher Bond, Lewis M. Simons, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, argues that Southeast Asia, and especially Indonesia, will be the next hot spot in the war on terror. The authors propose that the US, having lost credibility with failed military efforts in the Middle East, deploy "smart power" -- civilians -- instead of soldiers to defuse anger and create alternatives to violent movements. - Politics and Prose Bookstore Lewis M. Simons is a freelance writer who won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. He served as the foreign policy correspondent for Time magazine from 1996 to 1997 and bureau chief in Tokyo for Knight-Ridder Newspapers from 1989 to 1996. He has also been a correspondent for the Associated Press and a reporter for the Washington Post. Simons is the author of Worth Dying For, published by William Morrow and Company, as well as numerous articles for the Atlantic Monthly, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and the New York Times. He lives in Washington, DC

Celeste Kinginger, Exploring the Intercultural Dimensions of Cross-Border Language Learning
Dr. Kinginger speaks at a conference presented by the Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language and Literacy. Date: Friday, January 27th. Full details below. -------- Dr. Celeste Kinginger presents the first plenary address at the 3rd International Conference on the Development and Assessment of Intercultural Competence (ICC 2012) at the Westward Look Resort in Tucson, Arizona. This session was made possible through the support of the Center for Advanced Language Proficiency Education and Research (CALPER) at Pennsylvania State University. == Abstract == Many applied linguists and language educators accept the notion that language and culture learning are inextricably linked. Neologisms such as 'languaculture' (Agar, 1994) represent the profession's resolve to overcome the dual legacy of structuralist emphasis on language as a system abstracted from use and of utilitarianism's strict focus on the instrumental in language education. Yet, in research on study abroad, relatively little attention is given to the intercultural in relation to language learning. In this talk Dr. Kinginger will first trace several lines of inquiry leading to the intercultural aspects of cross-border language learning. These include research on the development of pragmatic competencies, studies of language socialization in specific interactive contexts, and ethnographic or other qualitative investigations analyzing students' own accounts of their experiences. Kinginger will then ...

GREAT KLEPTASTROPHES - Part I - The Panic of I837
Charles Albert Collman You are listening to excerpts from three chapters of Charles Albert Collman, Our Mysterious Panics 1830-1930; A Story of Events and the Men Involved (New York: William Morrow & Co., 1931) This summary of the Panic of 1837 is offered here to prepare my students to better understand two Youtubes planned to follow. The first of these will be Thomas Hart Benton's account of the period -- the Van Burin years when the Bank War initiated by Jackson's veto of the recharter of the Bank of the United States finally played out. The second will be John C Calhoun's answer to Henry Clay. Why these readings from these original sources? Because that is the only way to refute the false scholarship of both the Austrian School of Economics with its worship of the gold standard and the LaRouche followers' desire for another go at Hamiltonian and Henry Clay "American System" of big debt-financed infrastructure investments. The student of history who goes to the original source materials does not need long to confirm that gold and deficit financed public investment are the bane of American prosperity and happiness. I plan to put out more readings from Collman-- on the "Kleptastrophes" of 1857, 1873, 1884, 1993 and 1901. It is time the public had these great crimes firmly in mind as they address the biggest Kleptastrophe of them all in the 21st century.

History: Crushing the Jefferson Republic - Civil War - Reconstruction -14th Amendment
The Civil War was all about 1) getting a third national banking system 2) destroying Jeffersonian political power to impose Whig "'Hamiltonian' ascendency 3) the 14th AMENDMENT which was written to save Corporations as "legal persons" from state regulation without US Court Jurisdiction to rule on "due process". This Is Just To Say
This was a film shot on a cloudy Hong Kong morning and edited on the hot afternoon that followed right after. It interprets what has become a favorite poem of mine using scenes from my neighborhood and my apartment.
Thanks to Yvonne Young and Allison Morrow for their time, their help and their company.
