The King of Jungle Royal Bengal Tiger in the Grassland by Shirishkumar Patil.mpg
The Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 enables government agencies to take strict measures so as to ensure the conservation of the Bengal tigers. The Wildlife Institute of India estimates showed that tiger numbers had fallen in Madhya Pradesh by 61%, Maharashtra by 57%, and Rajasthan by 40%. The government's first tiger census, conducted under the Project Tiger initiative begun in 1973, counted 1827 tigers in the country that year. Using that methodology, the government observed a steady population increase, reaching 3700 tigers in 2002. However, the use of more reliable and independent censusing technology (including camera traps) for the 2007--2008 all-India census has shown that the numbers were in fact less than half than originally claimed by the Forest DepartmentThe Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a tiger subspecies native to the Indian subcontinent that in 2010 has been classified as endangered by IUCN. The total population is estimated at fewer than 2500 individuals with a decreasing trend, and none of the Tiger Conservation Landscapes within the Bengal tiger's range is large enough to support an effective population size of 250 adult individuals. Indian Snake Charmers Demand Jobs
CHAN: Snake charmers in India's eastern Orissa state protested a ban on their profession Saturday. They are also demanding the government to find them new jobs. STORY: Scores of charmers carrying snakes in baskets held a demonstration outside the provincial legislature in the state's capital. They were also demanding the government find them alternative jobs for a livelihood. The charmers say snakes have been their only source of income for decades and the ban means they're out of work. [Chittaranjan, Snake Charmer]: "We don't posses land so we cannot switch over to agriculture. We don't know anything except snake charming, so how can we leave this profession£® The government should provide us with an alternate option so that we are able to make ends meet. If the government provides us and our children with jobs, we'll leave snake charming.". Though few of the men have ventured out for other work, most are uneducated, lack any skills. The Indian government banned keeping snakes as pets under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, but began to enforce the law just two years ago. [Mahendra Parida, Activist]: "We are demanding that the government should provide us with an alternative, licence for venom extraction and make amendments in the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. We want a complete compensation package." Many volunteer groups say snake charmers are a part of the country's heritage and their traditional knowledge should be preserved and developed along with modern science ...

Horror of the Dancing Bears - The last Dance of the Sloth Bear
www.ironammonite.com 'The Last Dance?' In the summer of 2009 I visited Wildlife SOS to learn about the plight of India's dancing bears. My first stop was the Daroji bear sanctuary in Hampi. Here I met Samad Kottur, a local science teacher, who works to protect and rescue Sloth Bears. From my blog of 25th July 2009 "Most of the sloth bears Samad has rescued have been from the brutal art of bear dancing - a traditional livelihood which has been practiced in rural India for centuries but which has been illegal since the wildlife protection act of 1972. Yet until very recently during the breeding season bear poachers would wait outside a den for the mother to leave in search of food for her young. They would swoop in, grab and bag the young cubs and sell them for less than 30000 rupees (about 350 pounds) to Kollanders, the traditional bear dancing community. 'Here they begin a life of pain and discomfort.' Sammad told me, 'After a few months their canines are ripped out, their claws are clipped, males are castrated and a red hot iron is used to pierce their sensitive nuzzle through which a coarse rope is threaded.' it is the pain of pulling on this rope that makes them dance as they are dragged from village to village and made to perform, standing on their hind legs and used as puppets on a string. All the while enduring severe pain and punishment. 'they are severely malnourished and are only given the very poorest food to survive on' says Sammad with a tear in his eye 'when ...

Nine Snakes or the Wedding's Off
CHAN: And in one community in central India, whether or not couples get married depends upon the bride's parent's ability to collect a dowry of snakes. Despite a government ban on snake catching, the snake charmers' community in India's central Chhattisgarh observes an ancient marriage ritual. It requires the bride to carry nine different species of snakes in her dowry, and many marriages are held up if this requirement is not met. The approximate 25000 snake charmers in the state are particular about this age-old custom, and it is not uncommon that marriages are put on hold until all the snakes have been collected. Eligible bachelors and engaged youngsters have to wait indefinitely until the brides parents are able collect all nine snakes. Sometimes proposed marriages are even canceled in despair. [Durjan Sapera, Local Married Man]: "In our community, we cannot get married until we get nine snakes of different species. Even I got married only after I was given 9 different snakes. And someone I know has been engaged for the past year but will get married only after they give him nine snakes. They need to collect two more (snakes)." With widespread deforestation and expansion of human habitations into forested areas, the snake population has dwindled, worrying snake charmers and couples to be wed. Also, the enforcement of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 has squeezed snake charmers of some of their business. [Nirmala, Mother of a Bride]: "This is an age-old ...

Snake Charming Kids
FARIDABAD, INDIA - MARCH 26: A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy plays carelessly with a deadly cobra as his grandfather looks on proudly. This footage shows the dying tradition of snake charming in rural India. For centuries, India's snake charmers have enjoyed a celebrated place in the country's history. The hypnotic tunes they played to enchant snakes to dance have not only captured the imagination of Indians, but people around the world. But now, the industry is fighting for its survival amid stringent wildlife protection laws. Since the late 1990s, when the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) was implemented, members of the nomadic Bedia community have seen their meagre finances dwindle still further. The Act bars people from using wild animals commercially or turning them into pets, including bans on performances with live snakes. The largely illiterate Bedia community have no other source of income. Clad in a colourful turban, Budh Nath, 65, is training his young grandson to perfect the ancient art of making a snake dance to music - despite the fact it is illegal and he could be jailed if caught. The family, which lives in Faridabad, an hours drive from Delhi, claim they used to make a good living and were respected as highly skilled performers.

Great Himalayan National Park Part 2
www.greathimalayannationalpark.com http GHNP is a major source of water for the rural and urban centers of the region with four major rivers of the area originating from the glaciers in the Park. It is also a source of sustenance and livelihood for the local community living close to GHNP. In addition to lumber, the forest environment provides local people with Non- Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) such as honey, fruit nuts, bark of birch and yew, flowers and fuel wood. Globally, as well as locally, the Great Himalayan National Park has a very high public profile. The international community regards at it as a pilot site where the community based Biodiversity Conservation approach is being tested. The local people in the Ecozone (or Buffer Zone adjacent to the park) of GHNP recognize the fact that they have overexploited the medicinal herbs and NTFPs, and their sheep and goats have overgrazed the pastures. About the Park In 1980, the Himachal Wildlife Project (HWP) surveyed the upper Beas region to help establish the boundaries of the park. An area comprising the watersheds of Jiwa, Sainj, and Tirthan rivers became the Great Himalayan National Park in 1984. Starting from an altitude of 1700 metres above mean sea level, the highest peak within the Park approaches almost 5800 metres. The area of the National Park at the moment is 754.4 sq kms and it is naturally protected on the northern, eastern and southern boundaries by permanent snow or steep ridges. To facilitate ...

peacock dance
The Peacock, Pavo cristatus (Linnaeus), the national bird of India. It is symbolic of qualities like beauty, grace, pride and mysticism. Peacocok is a colourful, swan-sized bird, with a fan-shaped crest of feathers, a white patch under the eye and a long, slender neck. The male of the species is more colourful than the female, with a glistening blue breast and neck and a spectacular bronze-green train of around 200 elongated feathers it is able to expand its tail erect like fan as ostentatious display. The female is brownish, slightly smaller than the male, and lacks the train. These birds do not sound as beautiful as they look they have a harsh call. The elaborate courtship dance of the male, fanning out the tail and preening its feathers is a beautiful sight. The peacock is widely found in the Indian sub-continent from the south and east of the Indus river, Jammu and Kashmir, east Assam, south Mizoram and the whole of the Indian peninsula. Found wild in India (and also domesticated in villages) they live in jungle lands near water. They were once bred for food but now hunting of peacocks is banned in India. It is fully protected under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

HOW TO MAKE A FOREST FROM A PATCH OF GRASS
My daughter created a tiny nature reserve in our garden to save the wildlife in the grass from the lawn mower.
We stopped to talk about it, and then spent the afternoon looking for wildlife in the grass.
What she found really amazed me: so many little creatures in a tiny patch of grass.
Wildlife often seems remote and disconnected from our day-to-day lives, and our impact on the environment as individuals seems minimal.
But my daughter's idea - that an individual can save a tiny patch of the earth suddenly changed the way I think, and inspired me to do something.
So, I'm sending out this thought in the hope that others may be inspired to appreciate the diversity of life on earth (even the slugs and snails) and take positive action to protect it.
I hope this inspires you too.
As environmentalist David Orr wrote: "When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves."
Maybe together we can save an entire forest...starting with a tiny patch of grass?

Protect IP Act Breaks the Internet
When I found out Fight for the Future needed help with their campaign against a new bill called PROTECT-IP, I had to take a little time away from Everything is a Remix Part 4 and produce the video above. PROTECT-IP is the latest piece of legislation aiming to chip away at your online rights in the name of protecting the entertainment industry's business model. It's legislation that won't work, will give us yet more lawsuits, and will make the net worse.
Whether you lean right and hate business regulation, lean left and hate censorship, or lean neither way but hate useless legislation, PROTECT-IP is a bill everyone should oppose. I encourage you to head over to Fight For the Future and contact congress.

beta-testing the steadicam zephyr // first flight + bts
we've tried the merlin, pilot, flyer, and now the zephyr. across the line, the zephyr has got to be the easiest to setup, the most versatile unit to adjust in the field, the smoothest balanced, and a whole lotta fun.
just to demonstrate how much fun it is, at the end of this clip we tried no hands operating and we were all so surprised with how smooth those shots came out.
there is a disclaimer on this clip - it was super windy while we were shooting but we didn't have another time to shoot, so we made the best of it. if you like these results, i imagine i could have gotten more out of it had the wind not been so strong.
i often fly the flyer with a canon 7d and a 14mm rectilinear. the 14mm has a very short hyperfocal distance, so it is great for moving shots and keeping everyting in focus, and i love the look of the distortion versus a 16-35. on a 7d, with the crop, it isn't too too wide either, which is perfect. around the camera there is a cinevate cage and mattebox, used to provide protection for the camera, lets you rest the unit upside down (if you don't have a stand) and add some extra weight. the zephyr test featured the same configuration to really see how it would compare.
a couple big improvements to the zephyr for those of us who are dSLR shooters;
// the gimbal handle now offers tool-less adjustment.
// the gimbal handle also has straight edges on on opposing sides (which is part of the tango compatibility) and when using the zephyr alone allows you to feel where straight is
// the stage and base of the sled have a ton more power options (not something that a dSLR shooter will take as much advantage of unless you get into adding follow focus units and such)
// the biggest plus, and why i want a zephyr so much, is how the base of the sled accepts the same weights as the merlin and how it now adjusts. the post that holds the monitor and a second one that holds the battery can be unlocked and slid fore and aft, which allows you to quickly and easily achieve dynamic balance like never before on a rig this size. by adding the weights to the base i can make the rig heavier (more inertia, my personal preference for operating).
being that we are shooting dSLR, we only have one monitor live at a time, so we have to choose the one on the sled or the LCD on the camera. i choose the camera LCD (much to tiffen's dismay due to proper operating procedure) but when shooting live events i find it easier to check focus and see what is about to happen when i am looking up. it certainly does make it a challenge and you need to feel the rig more when you can't see the LCD (which you will see in some shots in the clip).
with these weights on the bottom, if you also choose to use the dSLR LCD, you could get away by removing the monitor as well as the battery plate and using just the weights as your counter balance. what that means is potentially tiffen could release a dSLR version without these components and sell it for less. i'm going to pitch that to them, but who knows if that will want to go that route as they strongly advise using the monitor on the sled when operating.
as of now, the zephyr would be my unit of choice. no MSRP has been announced and i don't have any indication where it will end up, though after using it i would have to assume it would be above the flyer and below the archer.
this test footage included about 10 minutes of setup out of the box. thanks to tiffen for letting me borrow one of the two units in existence to do some testing. this is footage from the first flight.
thanks to the rayjoyce team for acting as both a model and providing bts coverage for me.

OIPA in India demands the reinvestigation of all performing animals registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India under section 38 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 because in Jaipur FIR was lodged against so called owner of the animal and that might be registered with the AWBI with fake documents.
