When Earth Erupts- Subduction Zone
For more, visit science.discovery.com | Just outside New Zealand, White Island sits at the junction of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates. At this point, the floor of the Pacific Ocean dives down deep below the Australian plate.

Plate Tectonics: Seafloor Spreading, Subduction and Megathrust Earthquakes
In this video an introduction to seafloor spreading, subduction and megathrust earthquakes are animated to allow for easier understanding of the topics. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is used as the example. An area where the Juan de Fuca plate is being subducted under the North American Plate. We use images that can be found on our World Satellite Map. and please comment if you like the video and its useful ;-) For an up-to-date map of the Earth's tectonic plates goto: www.science-story.com For more videos and information goto www.science-story.com

Subduction Trailer
Subduction is a puzzle platformer made by the Junior game team, Improbability Drive. In Subduction, you play as a character from a three dimensional world that can only interact with two dimensions at a time. You can rotate to three different perspectives to get through 3D levels while moving in 2D only. Eventually you recieve the ability to bind layers together such that you can move in depth to reach areas you could otherwise not. subductiongame.com Note: A lot of the art in the game at the moment is placeholder.

Subduction_GPSevidence_640.mov
Frictional stress that builds up along a locked subduction-zone boundary moves the Earth. This animation shows the generalized relationship between GPS movement and strain release from an earthquake as occurred during the M8.8 earthquake. When the strain is released, the GPS receiver will snap back toward its original position. The GPS observations are consistent with the overriding plate moving west by about 3 meters near the epicenter. Other subduction zone animations: www.iris.edu

Plate tectonics visualised part 1: subduction/converging plates/volcano side-view
I've uploaded a series of four videos I made for my graduation assignment about plate tectonics. As a practical part of this assignment I decided to make stop-motion movies to help visualize people how plate tectonics work. The text is all in Dutch so here's a little translation: Opening title: converging plates: subduction First still: pink: plate a yellow: plate b red: earths mantle blue: sky/ocean black: direction of mantle convection

Subduction Alpha Trailer
Make sure to try the game out at this year's PAX Prime in Seattle at the DigiPen booth in the PC Freeplay Area! About Subduction: ---------------------------------- Subduction follows the journey of a girl through her own thoughts, confronting the twisting corridors of the psyche through their manifestations in a world both familiar and bizarre. Challenging spatial mechanics task the player with exploring a three-dimensional world through only two dimensions at a time as they attempt to piece together the girl's fragmented memory and the secrets they hold. Cascadia Subduction Zone - Ocean Shores Inundation
Credit: NOAA / PMEL / Center for Tsunami Research The NOAA Center for Tsunami Research modeled tsunami inundation from a great Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake for the coastal communities of Long Beach and Ocean Shores, Washington. A high-resolution numerical model was used to estimate tsunami propagation and inundation along the outer coast of southwest Washington. The tsunami source is based on prior work by Walsh et al., (2000) that simulates a great Mw 9.1 earthquake with an asperity off the coast of northern Washington. Details of this scenario and the model results are provided in Venturato et al., 2007. These animations depict wave propagation and inundation at each location.

How To Display Subduction Zone Seismicity
www.rockware.com (RockWare Website) This video shows how to display in three-dimensions, earthquake data associated with an active subduction zone. These visualizations are useful when trying to understand the geometries of plate boundaries. Here's the link to the USGS site where you can download earthquake data earthquake.usgs.gov

Subduction at Tonga
This is a 3D visualization of the Tonga subduction zone in the South Pacific. The subducting oceanic crust is blue and earthquakes are colored cubes. The red pyramid marks the epicenter of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake that happened on May 3 2006. The Tonga subduction zone is the most seismically active region on Earth. The structure of the subsurface was created by analyzing the sounds that earthquakes make, this is the science of seismic tomography. The same principal is used in ultrasound imaging, just that the wavelength of the sound waves is much longer in earthquakes 5 to 15 Hz compared with 200000 Hz in ultrasound imaging. The 3D visualization was created by the SIO Visualization Center at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Data and imagery is free for educational purposes, so long as you read the following Legal Disclaimer: siovizcenter.ucsd.edu

Elastic Rebound in a Subduction Zone
Oblique view of a highly generalized animation of a subduction zone where an oceanic plate is subducting beneath a continental plate. (See sketch below for parts.) This scenario can happen repeatedly on a 100-500 year cycle. The process which produces a mega-thrust earthquake would generate a tsunami, not depicted here. More into at: www.iris.edu

The Cascade Subduction Zone and Earthquakes
Animation of the Cascadia region. As the Juan de Fuca plate is subducted beneath the continent, magma forms in the Cascade mountain range causing the expansion of the active volcanic arc. Deformation of rock around magma chambers can also cause earthquakes to occur.
