Road Back to the Frozen Four (69 minutes)
History
[edit]Partridge and his academy
The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, for which Partridge borrowed cannon and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented classroom instruction and added an element of realism to the college’s program of well-rounded military education.
Partridge founded six other military institutions during his quest to reform the fledgling United States military. They were the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846), Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845), Pennsylvania Military Institute at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848), Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848), the Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute at Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854), Gymnasium and Military Institute at Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853) and the National Scientific and Military Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).[5]
[edit]Fire and hardship: Norwich in the 19th century
In 1825 the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut, to provide better naval training to the school's growing corps of cadets. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

Viewpoint - Senator Kate Lundy and Laurie Wilson
Senator Lundy is interviewed about her background, interest in ICT, Government 2.0, Canberra and a few personal topics such as her passion for sport.
Transcript:
Laurie Wilson: Hello and welcome to another edition of viewpoint. Kate Lundy has represented the people of the ACT in the senate for well over a decade. Like many Labor party politicians Senator Lundy made her way up through the union ranks, working as a young woman in the building industry. Along the way she developed a fascination for computing and a passion for the power of the internet. While not widely known outside of Canberra Senator Lundy was recently named among the top twenty-five people around the world who are influencing the role of the internet in politics.
Opening Sequence
LW: Kate Lundy thank you very much for joining us on viewpoint. You’ve been a Senator now for what, thirteen years, when you look back over that time what have been the highlights?
Kate Lundy: Well Laurie it won’t surprise you to know that winning the federal election was a highlight. I think being in opposition for so many of those thirteen years was extremely tough. Election after election Labor were out manoeuvred and defeated at the election so come 2007 it was a very exciting time.
LW: Yes, unlike most other Senator’s who represent the states you actually a territory, the ACT and your terms of office are actually different to those of the states. In fact you’ve actually been a Senator from day one of when Labor went into opposition way back in 1996.
KL: Look you’re absolutely right. A lot of people don’t realise that our term is exactly the same as the house of reps. The four territory Senators, two from the Northern Territory, two from the ACT have essentially a three year term or thereabouts aligned with the house of reps, so we go to election every time and we also start our term the day after the poll in the same way the house of reps members do.
LW: Does that make it harder for you? I mean it’s almost like in a sense you’re a member of the lower house except that you’re not in the lower house.
KL: Look, to be honest it feels like that because I often say we are the most accountable Senators because we are elected every three years but sort of all jokes aside my electorate is the ACT. It’s two very large lower house seats, the seat of Canberra and the seat of Fraser combined, but the way I do my work, I think is very much like a house of reps member. We do a lot of constituent work, we make sure our office is very accessible and that constituents are welcome to come in and discuss whatever it is they’d like to discuss with me. So it feels a bit like that.
LW: Indeed, unlike most other members of parliament, upper house and lower house you actually live where you work.
KL: Well in this regard I think I’m one of the lucky ones. I do get to go home every night and that can’t be said for the vast majority of sitting members when they’re here in Canberra. That’s quite a tough life when you think of the separation from family, so in that sense I do think I’m lucky. I live in north Canberra so it’s about ten minutes from parliament house and I think that’s been essential to have a family and to do my work.
LW: Looking back, you actually left school at quite a young age and you took an unusual career path for a young woman. You went into the building industry.
KL: Yeah, Look I’m very proud of how I got to parliament, it is a bit different. I did leave school as you say when I was sixteen and started work as a labourer. That was pretty unusual at the time and my job was removing asbestos from public buildings, so it was quite tough, we would wear a lot of protective clothing and in fact Laurie, it was that experience that raised my political consciousness. My focus was on occupational health and safety and arguing to make sure that we did abide by the safety standards associated with removing asbestos and it really underpins how I became a political person.
LW: You obviously did end up in politics but the path to that, like many other Labor members was through the union movement, and leadership in the union movement, what motivated you to take that path?
KL: Look I think it was ultimately about necessity, my parent weren’t particularly political so my eye opening if you like, or my awareness about the relationship between your experience in the workplace and politics came about on the job and it didn’t take very long to work out that someone made the safety standards, someone made the laws that governed who we worked and how we were able to work and so the connection happened pretty early on. We worked to a code of practice, that code of practice was developed by the government, the government made the policy that set the code of practice. So if you wanted to influence the government policy you needed to be engaged and involved in the first instance through my union, which was part of the negotiating partie

[English Voiceover] Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah(HA) - Press Conference - August 09, 2010
The full text of the press conference held by Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Monday August 9th, 2010 at Shahed Hall – Airport Highway
In the Name of Allah, The Compassionate, The Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, The Lord of the world. Peace be on the Seal of prophets - our Master and Prophet Abi Al Qassem Mohammad - and on his chaste and pure Household, chosen companions and all prophets and messengers.
Brothers and sisters! Ladies and gentlemen! Peace be upon you all and Allah's mercy and blessing.
First, I have promised to hold a press conference in which I present indications and data that open new horizons which help in accusing the Israeli enemy of assassinating martyr Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. This is exactly what I promised of, and I will fulfill my promise tonight Inshallah.
Also since I made my announcement to this effect, comments from one party were issued: Why now? Why not years before? Why did you hide this data? Why are you unveiling it now and talking about it?
Apart from the means, background and technique in which this issue was evoked – as we will talk seriously because we do not want to get engaged with each other – I will leave answering this question to the end of the press conference because the data which I will present will help, taking its nature and timing into consideration. That will help very much in answering this question.
Indeed I must welcome all of you and thank you for this important and great attendance. It goes without saying that the event, the topic, the cause, the stage and the challenge necessitated on you this level of responsibility – and you are competent for this responsibility. Welcome then. I also thank all the media outlets that will show interest in what I will say and broadcast it live on air.
As usual, there are several topics:
I will try to be as quick as possible. I will talk also in classical Arabic to generalize the benefit abroad. I will be as quick as possible to make full use of time though the case deserves considerable time from all of us.
The first topic: Israel's accusation of Hezbollah. This is an indispensable prelude. The Israeli enemy had been working on this since the very beginning and especially after the event of September 13th, 1993. All of us – all the Lebanese – know that on that very day Oslo Accord was inked. Hezbollah organized a protest in the southern suburb (Dahiyeh); it was opposed by the Lebanese government which was then under Premier Hariri. Fire was opened on the demonstrators; ten martyrs fell and more than 50 were wounded. At the time, a kind of political tension and conflict took place between Hezbollah and the first government of Premier Hariri and with Premier Rafiq Hariri in person. This is well known.
The Israelis intruded through one of their agent at the time who contacted one of the security internals in the party of Premier Hariri. He worked at convincing him that Hezbollah is plotting to assassinate him and is now in the execution stage. He particularly accused brethren martyr Imad Mughniyeh and others of what he claimed and the data he gave.
To comprehend the issue, I would like to present it in my way: Months after the event of September 13th, 1993, Syrian Intelligence and pursuant to a command by General Ghazi Kanaan, arrested one of the Islamic Resistance cadres in Sidon – namely brethren fighter Hajj Ali Deeb who is known as Abu Hassan Salameh and who was later killed by the Israelis. When you listen to the collaborator talking about Abu Hassan Salameh, he would be meaning brethren Ali Deeb. Brethren Ali Deeb was arrested in ambiguous unknown conditions. Days later, I knew that brethren Abu Hassan Salameh is in Anjjar. So I went to meet General Ghazi Kanaan, and I called on him to set free the brethren. He told me that he sent him that morning to Damascus and that the issue is in Damascus by now. I blamed him saying: What is the story? Has you summoned him from me for interrogation, you know that we would have responded. You know we respond in such issues especially if the case is sensitive.
General Ghazi told me: (Indeed let no one say I am referring to deceased persons because the document exists and will be presented in a while) Some days ago, Premier Rafiq Hariri paid me a visit and told me: I have some data; there is a very close person to Hajj Imad Mughniyeh. He is either a politburo or one of the very close bodyguards to Hajj Imad. He attended a session (this reminds me of Zuheir Essedeeq) with Hajj Imad Mughniyeh and Abu Hassan Salameh among others whom he did not know by name. In the session, they plotted to assassinate you. The assassination will take place through ambushes which will be set for you in this road and on that road. He gave him some details. General Ghazi carries on saying: We can't remain silent on that because this is an assassination operation which is being set for the Premier. We can't contact Imad Mughniyeh but we ca

Papercuts to the Soul: Morals, Values, and Ethics Video Blog 4 by Stan Slap
Unfortunately, what any company wants most from its managers is the one thing it most stops its managers from giving. So it's time for some fierce truths about management. Let me tell you first of all that the neuro biological source of emotional commitment in a human being is not a mystery. The source is the ability to live your own values in whatever relationship or environment you're involved in.
Now, there are a lot of experts about human relationships. I mean, deep ‑‑ not talking about women are from Bloomingdale's, men are from big chief auto parts. Not that stuff. I'm talking about deep expertise in human relationships. Regardless of their point of view, they'll all tell you the same thing as a fundamental tenet. If you want an emotional committed relationship between human beings or groups of human beings, everybody involved in that relationship has got to be free to bring the best of who they are into the relationship. Unchecked, unvarnished, unhesitatingly.
