India Post Independence Reminiscence and Political Thoughts - I talk to you Letter 10
Post Independence Reminiscence of an Indian Senior Citizen India Post Independence Reminiscence and Political Thoughts - I talk to you Letter 10 Dear Friends and Sisters, I am talking to you, Manak Chand Sanghi from Bangalore, Karnataka State. In this 10th letter, I will talk to you regarding our relations with other countries and other matter of concerns. I remember that India intervened in the Pakistan Civil War in support of East Pakistan. India emerged victorious in the resulting conflict to become the regional hegemony of South Asia. East Pakistan was later named as Bangladesh. The United States had supported Pakistan and India had received help from the Soviet Union. This resulted in our relations with the Soviet Union becoming strong and with the United States relations grew distant after the war. Soviet Union had become our largest trading partner and the biggest arms supplier. India's new hegemonic position as articulated under the Indira Doctrine led to attempts to bring the Himalayan States under the Indian sphere of influence. Nepal and Bhutan aligned with India in 1975 and after years of building support, Indira Gandhi annexed Sikkim to India. Please see that in the politics there is no friend or foe but it is the time which makes a friend or foe. Hence present situation of time plays an important role to decide. We maintained close ties with neighboring Bangladesh. Late Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman recognized Smt. Indira Gandhi's contributions to the independence of Bangladesh. But Mujibur Rahman's pro-India policies antagonized many in Bangladeshi politics and the military who thought and feared that Bangladesh had become a client state of India. The assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975 led to the establishment of Islamist military regimes that sought to distance the country from India. Smt. Indira Gandhi relationship with the military regimes was strained due to her alleged support of anti-Islamist Leftist guerilla forces of Bangladesh. In general, there was a rapprochement between Smt. Indira Gandhi and Bangladesh regimes. But the border dispute and the Farraka Dam remained an irritant in our bilateral ties. I tell you that the Bangladesh Government conferred its highest state award posthumously to Smt. Indira Gandhi for her outstanding contribution given to their country's independence. Our relations with Sri Lanka during Indira Gandhi's time was accommodating and we enjoyed a cordial relations with Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 1974 as India ceded the tiny Islet of Kachchatheevu to Sri Lanka in order to save Sirimavo Bandaranaike's socialist government from a political disaster. Later our relations with Sri Lanka soured over Sri Lanka's turn away from Socialism under Julius Jayewardene whom Indira Gandhi despised him as a western puppet. India during Smt. Indira Gandhi regime was alleged to have supported LTTE militants to put pressure on Jayewardene Government to abide by Indian interests. Indira Gandhi rejected demands to invade Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Black July 1983, an anti-Tamil programme carried out by Sinhalese mobs. Indira Gandhi made a statement emphasizing that she stood for the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. Simultaneously, she cannot remain a silent spectator to any injustice done to the Tamil community. Our relations with Pakistan remained strained following Shimla Accord in 1972 because of Indira Gandhi's authorization of detonating of a nuclear device at Pokhran in 1974. Pakistani leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto viewed as an attempt to intimidate Pakistan for accepting India's hegemony in the sub-continent. However in May 1976 both Bhutto and Indira Gandhi agreed to reopen diplomatic establishments and normalize relations with us. Due to rise of power of General Zia-ul-Haq of Pakistan in 1978 our relations with Pakistan became nadir. Indira Gandhi accused General Zia-ul-Haq for supporting Khalistani militants in Punjab. Indira Gandhi authorised operation Meghdooth in which India became victorious in the resulting conflict against Pakistan. Dear Countrymen, I will tell you about political situation in our country now. Now-a-days present politicians want to win the elections by applying wrong methods and tactics. They apply/use wrong tactics of divide and rule on account of different regions, religions and castes. This spoils the genuine, clean and honest politicians and the democratic system. Due to this the confidence of our young literate voters shakes and deteriorates. They think otherwise and do not participate in the election process. Hence the verdict which comes out is not the perfect one.- published: 17 Oct 2013

'Footsteps into the Future' chronicles the bonds between India and Russia and points to aspects that can further strengthen this relationship. The film provides a wealth of information about the history of the relation between India and the USSR in bygone years, the distancing after USSR dissolved and the new relation that began between India and Russia in 2000, when the two countries signed the co-operation treaty. With the demise of the Soviet Union, India lost its long time military supplier and principal diplomatic crutch. It has also grown increasingly disenchanted with Arab sympathy for Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. As a result of the diplomatic relations, India showed keen interest in developing high level military and commercial links with Israel, especially during the period of BJP led government of 1998-2004. Israel is now the second largest supplier of arms to India (after Russia). It provides India with missile radar, border monitoring equipment and other similar high-tech military hardwires. In addition, several thousand Indian soldiers have been provided with "anti-insurgency training in Israel". The latest in the series was the launching of Israel's spy satellite by India in January 2008 to enhance Israel's intelligence-gathering capability. The geopolitical implications of the collaboration between India and Israel are grave and manifold. India's close collaboration with Israel is fundamentally to woo the United States as well as to build a new strategic relation vis-à-vis Pakistan and China.- published: 10 Sep 2013

On April 10, 1973, President Richard Nixon met in the Oval Office with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew. Singapore Ambassador to the United States Ernest S. Monteiro and Henry Kissinger also attended. This meeting was captured by recording devices in the Oval Office. In this conversation segment, President Nixon and Prime Minister Lee discuss the future of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Lee comments on China's trade relations and national security policy, including ambitions for second-strike capability. Yuri Bezmenov's Life Story (Love Letter to America)
“…Yuri Alexandrovic Bezmenov was born in 1939 in the former Soviet Union and worked as a journalist for Pravda. In this capacity, he secretly answered to the KGB. His true job was to further the aims of communist Russia. After being assigned to a station in India, Bezmenov eventually grew to love the people and culture of India, while, at the same time, he began to resent the KGB-sanctioned oppression of intellectuals who dissented from Moscow’s policies. He decided to defect to the West. Bezmenov/Schuman is best remembered for his Pro-American Anti-communist lectures and books from the 1980s.
In 1984, he gave an interview to G. Edward Griffin who, at that time, was a member of the John Birch Society, an anti-communist group. Bezmenov explained in this interview the methods used by the Soviet KGB to secretly subvert the democratic system of the United States[1].
Tomas D. Schuman authored the book Love Letter to America, W.I.N., Almanac Panorama, Los Angeles 1984, ISBN 0-935090-13-4. In Love Letter to America he writes, “Like a true-life Winston Smith, from the George Orwell book 1984, Tomas Schuman worked for the communist equivalent of Orwell’s Ministry of Truth – The Novosti Press Agency (RIA Novosti). Novosti, which means “News” in Russian, exists to produce slanted and false stories to plant in the foreign media. The term for this KGB effort is “disinformation”.
Tomas D. Schuman was associated with World Information Network (WIN) located at 31220 La Baya Dr. #110, Westlake, CA 91362. WIN published WIN PANORAMA books and cassettes along with the WIN Panorama Report newsletter. WIN also published under the name WIN Almanac Panorama, or ALmanac. In 1985, Tomas D. Schuman wrote No Novosti is Good News, Almanac, ISBN 0935090177 and in 1986 he wrote World Thought Police, Almanac, ASIN B0007246RO. An order form at the rear of Love Letter To America offers a book called KAL 007 and a cassette called “Radio Moscow” by Schuman.
Tomas Schuman (Yuri Bezmenov) L.A. 1983 pt.IV 1/2 lectured that the Soviet Union may have shot down flight Korean Air Lines Flight 007 aka KAL 007 to kill Larry McDonald, a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing the seventh congressional district of Georgia as a Democrat. In addition to being a congressman, Larry McDonald was chairman of the John Birch Society and considered communism an international conspiracy. McDonald was a founder of the Western Goals Foundation that combatted the threat of communism. McDonald introduced Resolution 773 calling for a comprehensive Congressional investigation into the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and Trilateral Commission. A May 1983 broadcast of Crossfire, recorded months before Soviet interceptors shot down KAL 007, killing anti-communist Congressman McDonald along with 268 other souls, can be found on YouTube entitled Larry McDonald on the New World Order (NWO).
The whereabouts of Yuri Bezmenov, aka Tomas David Schuman, is unknown but unconfirmed internet sources report that he died in 1997 in Canada. The G. Edward Griffin interview along with many other lectures by Yuri Bezmenov aka Tomas Schuman can be viewed on YouTube. …”

7 April 2009
(U) Prepared by the Extremism and Radicalization Branch, Homeland Environment Threat Analysis Division. Coordinated with the FBI.
(U) Scope
(U//FOUO) This product is one of a series of intelligence assessments published by the Extremism and Radicalization Branch to facilitate a greater understanding of the
phenomenon of violent radicalization in the United States. The information is provided to federal, state, local, and tribal counterterrorism and law enforcement officials so they may effectively deter, prevent, preempt, or respond to terrorist attacks against the United States. Federal efforts to influence domestic public opinion must be conducted in an overt and transparent manner, clearly identifying United States Government sponsorship.

(U) Key Findings
(U//LES) The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A;) has no specific information that domestic rightwing* terrorists are currently planning acts of violence, but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues. The economic downturn and the election of the first African American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.
— (U//LES) Threats from white supremacist and violent antigovernment groups during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry
out violent acts. Nevertheless, the consequences of a prolonged economic downturn—including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability to obtain credit—could create a fertile recruiting environment for rightwing
extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and government authorities similar to those in the past.
— (U//LES) Rightwing extremists have capitalized on the election of the first African American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal
through propaganda, but they have not yet turned to attack planning.
(U//FOUO) The current economic and political climate has some similarities to the 1990s when rightwing extremism experienced a resurgence fueled largely by an economic recession, criticism about the outsourcing of jobs, and the perceived threat to U.S. power and sovereignty by other foreign powers.
— (U//FOUO) During the 1990s, these issues contributed to the growth in the number of domestic rightwing terrorist and extremist groups and an increase in violent acts targeting government facilities, law enforcement officers, banks,
and infrastructure sectors.
— (U//FOUO) Growth of these groups subsided in reaction to increased government scrutiny as a result of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and disrupted plots, improvements in the economy, and the continued U.S. standing as the preeminent world power.
(U//FOUO) The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.
* (U) Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and
adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authorit

(U//FOUO) Rightwing Extremism: Current
Economic and Political Climate Fueling
Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment
7 April 2009
(U) Prepared by the Extremism and Radicalization Branch, Homeland Environment Threat Analysis
Division. Coordinated with the FBI.
(U) Scope
(U//FOUO) This product is one of a series of intelligence assessments published by the
Extremism and Radicalization Branch to facilitate a greater understanding of the
phenomenon of violent radicalization in the United States. The information is
provided to federal, state, local, and tribal counterterrorism and law enforcement
officials so they may effectively deter, prevent, preempt, or respond to terrorist attacks
against the United States. Federal efforts to influence domestic public opinion must be
conducted in an overt and transparent manner, clearly identifying United States
Government sponsorship.

(U) Key Findings
(U//LES) The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A;) has no specific
information that domestic rightwing* terrorists are currently planning acts of violence,
but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about
several emergent issues. The economic downturn and the election of the first
African American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and
recruitment.
— (U//LES) Threats from white supremacist and violent antigovernment groups
during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry
out violent acts. Nevertheless, the consequences of a prolonged economic
downturn—including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability
to obtain credit—could create a fertile recruiting environment for rightwing
extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and
government authorities similar to those in the past.
— (U//LES) Rightwing extremists have capitalized on the election of the first
African American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new
members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal
through propaganda, but they have not yet turned to attack planning.
(U//FOUO) The current economic and political climate has some similarities to the
1990s when rightwing extremism experienced a resurgence fueled largely by an
economic recession, criticism about the outsourcing of jobs, and the perceived threat to
U.S. power and sovereignty by other foreign powers.
— (U//FOUO) During the 1990s, these issues contributed to the growth in the
number of domestic rightwing terrorist and extremist groups and an increase in
violent acts targeting government facilities, law enforcement officers, banks,
and infrastructure sectors.
— (U//FOUO) Growth of these groups subsided in reaction to increased
government scrutiny as a result of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and
disrupted plots, improvements in the economy, and the continued U.S. standing
as the preeminent world power.
(U//FOUO) The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of
military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities
could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists
capable of carrying out violent attacks.
* (U) Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and
adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particul

Activists in Syria call it the heaviest shelling in days. The U.N. warns of potential civil war. A crew from CNN has crossed into Syria, violating a government ban on foreign journalists.
“That’s the sound of government security forces sweeping through a neighborhood in Daraa, one of the several cities under siege right now.”
The U.N. continues to look for solutions. Diplomats sift through conflicting reports. Here’s euronews.
REPORTER: “In New York, the envoys were told the Russia-China veto had encouraged Syrian attacks.”
NAVI PILLAY, U.N. HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS: “I am particularly appalled by the ongoing onslaught on Homs … ”
Meanwhile, Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao says his country’s committed to peace in Syria. BBC News quotes Jiabao as saying...
“What is most urgent and pressing now is to prevent war and chaos so that the Syrian people will be freed from greater sufferings … China will absolutely not protect any party, including the government of Syria.”
As for Russia — a writer for The Globe and Mail details that country’s focus as Syria’s situation worsens. He calls Syria Russia’s best friend, most reliable ally and its biggest arms buyer in the Middle East.
“It’s also home to Russia’s only naval base outside the former Soviet Union. So it was no great surprise that Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning Syria. But unwavering support as the carnage worsens, the international outcry grows and ever more gruesome evidence of wanton killing emerges puts Moscow in a tough spot.”
Another writer for Russia’s VPK News predicts an end to a world that would’ve come to Syria’s rescue in the past. The Russia and India Report has this translation.
“America is growing weaker owing to a sea change in the world economy, the financial crisis and the spread of technologies (including military technology) to the countries formerly dominated by the West. The European Union, as an economic rival of the US, has proved vulnerable and is not a credible military force. Military casualties have become the NATO’s Achilles heel …”
A blogger for The Council on Foreign Relations recalls previous U.S. military intervention in Syria. He writes about the 1982 attempt’s less-than-optimal outcome, foreshadowing more military ineffectiveness.
“A criticism of proponents of military force in Syria, Iran, or elsewhere, is that they rarely take into account recent history and how it can be instructive for likely outcomes today. Or worse, advocates often rely on myths or mischaracterizations about earlier applications of force, particularly in their supposedly successful outcomes.”
According to a TIME report, the Obama administration says it backs Arab League plans to end the Syrian violence, but doesn’t foresee a military solution.

Afghanistan Attack on U.S. Consulate, Syria UN Security Resolution, India Visa Application (2013)
The U.S. consulate in Herat, Afghanistan was attacked on September 13, 2013 by a group of Taliban militants. Reports indicated that the assault began at 5:30 am on the front gate of the consulate. Attackers armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades arrived in a truck and opened fire, and moments later the truck exploded, causing extensive damage to the front gate. At least two Afghan security guards were killed, and more than 20 were wounded. A gunbattle ensued, and all attackers were killed. A statement released by the U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force described the assault as a "complex attack." Local journalists reported that U.S. forces joined the fight and that several coalition helicopters flew overhead during the firefight. The Taliban took credit for the attack in an emailed statement. In a press release, the United Nations condemned the attack "in the strongest terms." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_attack_on_U.S._consulate_in_Herat Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov (Russian: Серге́й Викторович Лавров; born 21 March 1950) is a Russian[1] diplomat who has been the Foreign Minister of Russia since 2004. His nomination to the Foreign Minister's office was approved by two Russian presidents, in 2008 by Dmitry Medvedev and in 2012 by Vladimir Putin. Prior to that, Lavrov was a Soviet diplomat and Russia's ambassador to the United Nations from 1994 to 2004. Besides his native Russian, Lavrov speaks English, French, and Sinhala.[2] In October 1990, Andrey Kozyrev, who led the control of the international organizations at the time, was named Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation. In that year, the powers of the Soviet Foreign Ministry and the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Soviet Republic were distributed. Until then the Russian SSR had only a ceremonial role. In October 1991, the foreign ministers of all Soviet republics, except Georgia and the Baltic states, held a meeting where they dealt with the Union of Foreign Ministries. In November 1990, the State Council decided to change its name from the Union of Foreign Ministries to the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union and in December that year, the Foreign Ministry of Soviet Russia became the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation. In 1992 Lavrov was named director of the Department for International Organizations and Global Issues in the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation. In April 1991, he was named deputy foreign minister. Lavrov was asked to oversee the activities of the Human Rights and International Cultural Cooperation and the two departments - for the CIS countries, international organizations and international economic cooperation.[6] Lavrov worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1994 when he returned to work in the United Nations, this time as the Permanent Representative of Russia. While in the latter position, he was the President of the United Nations Security Council in December 1995, June 1997, July 1998, October 1999,[7] December 2000, April 2002, and June 2003.[8] On 9 March 2004, President Vladimir Putin appointed Lavrov to the post of minister of foreign affairs.[3] He succeeded Igor Ivanov in the post. On 21 May 2012, Lavrov was reappointed foreign minister to the cabinet led by prime minister Dimitri Medvedev.[3] Lavrov is regarded as continuing in the style of his predecessor: a brilliant diplomat but a civil servant rather than a politician, Russia's foreign policy being largely determined by the President of the Russian Federation. A Russian foreign policy expert at London's Chatham House, has described him as "a tough, reliable, extremely sophisticated negotiator", but adds that "he's not part of Putin's inner sanctum" and that the toughening of Russian foreign policy has got very little to do with him.[9] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Lavrov Other Issues: INDIA/PAKISTAN Bilateral Relations BANGLADESH Upcoming Elections Freedom of the Press DPRK Compliance to International Commitments / Nuclear LIBYA Update Benghazi / Cooperation INDIA Ibrahim Dawood Sentencing of perpetrators- published: 15 Sep 2013
