Social Cooperation: Why Thieves Hate Free Markets
Many believe that market economies create a dog eat dog environment full of human conflict and struggle. To Prof. Aeon Skoble, the competition in markets does not create conflict, but rather, encourages people to cooperate with one another for mutual benefit. For instance, suppose a thief steals a suit from Macy's. If Macy's knew who the thief was, one could argue that Macy's has an incentive to keep this information from their competitors. By withholding information about the thief, it would make it much less likely that thief would get caught while robbing Macy's competitors. However, in the real world, competitors share information about theft with one another, creating a valuable information network. Competitors share information because it is in all of their mutual interest to crack down on theft. If a business chooses to ignore the information network, they lose out on valuable information. The example above is just one of many examples where competitors have a strong incentive to cooperate with one another. In a certain way, we're all merchants who trade with one another. We all individually depend on networks of reputation and trust to own a car, own a home, and have a job. In a world of competition and scarcity, we are not only capable of cooperating with one another, but we frequently do. These voluntary systems of social cooperation, often called organic or spontaneous orders, are not planned from the top down by enlightened rulers. Rather, they emerge overtime ...

Riz Khan - State capitalism vs free market
Is the global economic downturn proof that freewheeling western-style capitalism has failed? Countries like China and India which practice varying forms of controlled "state capitalism" appear to be emerging from the global economic crisis stronger, both economically and politically. But will this state capitalist bubble eventually burst as well?

Economics 101: Learning From Sweden's Free Market Renaissance
Sweden is a powerful example of the importance of public policy. The Nordic nation became rich between 1870 and 1970 when government was very small, but then began to stagnate as welfare state policies were implemented in the 1970s and 1980s. The CF&P; Foundation video explains that Sweden is now shifting back to economic freedom in hopes of undoing the damage caused by an excessive welfare state. www.freedomandprosperity.org

The Free Market vs.Government Intervention: An Economic Panel Discussion
The Slippery Rock University Young Americans for Liberty hosted an Economic Panel Discussion on the topic, "The Free Market vs. Government Intervention."It was located in the ATS Auditorium on Slippery Rock's campus. The event was organized to educate students and the community on the less-known Austrian School of economics and to answer tough questions on tuition and healthcare costs, inflation, bailouts, the stimulus, the Federal Reserve, the 2008 crises, and taxes. Brandon Cestrone, the President of the SRU Young Americans for Liberty, moderated the panel discussion. Two professors from Grove City visited Slippery Rock to defend the free market and explain why government regulations cause distortions within market. The two professors from Slippery Rock argued government intervention is needed within the economy to prevent reckless behavior. The two participating professors from Grove City College were Dr. Jeffrey Herbener and Dr. Shawn Ritenour. Dr. Herbener is a senior fellow of the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama and also a Professor of Economics at Grove City College. Dr. Ritenour is a Professor of Economics at Grove City College and adjunct scholar at the Ludwig von Mises Institute. Dr. David Culp and Dr. Frederick Tannery are the participating professors from Slippery Rock University. Dr. Tannery is the Associate Professor of Business at Slippery Rock University and the Faculty Advisor to the Economics Honor Society. Dr. Culp is the chairman of the ...

Joseph Stiglitz: Smith's "Invisible Hand" a Myth?
Complete video at: fora.tv Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz challenges the influential teachings of 18th-century economist Adam Smith, citing flaws with Smith's metaphor of an "invisible hand" guiding the free market. "The reason the invisible hand often seemed invisible was that it wasn't there," he says. Stiglitz claims an uncritical adherence to Smith's ideas is partially to blame for the current financial crisis. ---- Joseph Stiglitz, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize Winner for Economics and author of Freefall sits down with Andrew Leonard, Senior Technology and Business Writer for Salon. Stiglitz argues that America exported bad economics, bad policies and bad behavior to the rest of the world. Stiglitz outlines a way forward building on ideas that he has championed his entire career: restoring the balance between markets and government; addressing the inequalities of the global financial system; and demanding more good ideas (and less ideology) from economists. - Commonwealth Club of California Joseph Stiglitz was chief economist at the World Bank until January 2000. Before that he was the chairman of President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001. He is currently a finance and economics professor at Columbia University. He is the author of Globalization and Its Discontents and The Roaring Nineties.

Morality and the Free Market - Michael Sandel
Complete video at: fora.tv Political philosopher Michael Sandel argues that free market economics have affected American perceptions of ethics, morality, and value. By emphasizing the monetary value of human goods, says Sandel, Americans may be moving away from notions of emotional and social worth. ----- Harvard Professor Michael Sandel deliveres a speech titled "Markets and Morals" as part of the Chautauqua Institution 2009 Summer Lecture Series. He tackles some of economics' toughest ethical questions, such as the business of commercial surrogacy and the price of citizenship. - Chautauqua Institution Michael J. Sandel is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught political philosophy since 1980. He is the author of Liberalism and the Limits of Justice (Cambridge University Press, 1982, 2nd edition, 1997; translated into eight foreign languages), Democracy's Discontent: America in Search of a Public Philosophy (Harvard University Press, 1996), Public Philosophy: Essays on Morality in Politics (Harvard University Press, 2005), and The Case against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering (Harvard University Press, 2007). THE FREE MARKET ECONOMY REALITY SHOW
My friends, let me lighten your somewhat cloudy weekend with a report that will fill your hearts with hope, maybe even exuberance. It is the story of the German economic miracle, that transformed a nation from virtual total misery and destruction into a blooming landscape of wealth. It did so at least in part with the help of the United States, help that became known as Marshall Plan. --- Why am I telling you this? Because the current situation in the United States is somewhat similar, with the economy in shambles and an infrastructure that is in dire need of repair. Granted, it may not quite be as serious as Europe in1947 but extraordinary circumstances namely the perpetual threat from hostile nations to destroy our economy by interfering with our energy supply make the situation equally dismal. --- Let me get the latter out of the way so you agree with me on the seriousness of the threat. --- According to the Jerusalem Issue Brief, on December 15, 2004, bin Laden published an audio recording in which he demanded that the crude price then $46 dollars per barrel should be at least $100. In case you didnt notice, he surpassed that goal with the help of his OPEC conspirators. If you think that is history, dream on! A couple of weeks ago OPEC made the decision to cut its members output by 2 million barrel per day. Only the desperate Bush diplomacy kept them from actually doing it. --- Follow me for a minute into macro economics and allow me to illuminate a couple of terms ...

Free Market Economy
Free Market Economy Economic systems that are based on voluntary exchanges in markets are called free market economies. In a free market economy, individuals and businesses use markets to exchange money and products. In a free market system, individuals and privately owned businesses own the factors of production, make what they want, and buy what they want. In other words, individuals answer the three key economic questions of what to produce, how to produce it, and who consumes that which is produced.

Rev. In Jin Moon's Lovin' LLM Sermon, August 7, 2011
Sermon Notes, August 7, 2011
In Jin Moon
1. In Jin Nim greeted everyone. (The applause was especially enthusiastic – with all the middle school camp kids in the audience). She just got back from Las Vegas at two o'clock this morning. True Parents (True Parents) send us their greetings!
True Parents at Hoon Dok Hae in Las Vegas, August 6, 2011
2. In Jin Nim reported to True Parents about the WFWP 19th annual conference -- they were delighted to hear about it. Congratulations to the WFWP. In Jin Nim recognized Angelika Selle (President) and the team that did such a phenomenal job. The conference highlighted the beauty of women from all around the world who came to discuss how to unlock the power and beauty of relationships. In Jin Nim had the honor of being the keynote speaker at one of the morning plenary sessions. To come together in the spirit of the feminine and in the celebration of the feminine and discuss amongst themselves how they can be the agent of change to usher in the new millennium. It was an incredibly powerful and profoundly moving experience for In Jin Nim. In Jin Nim could not attend the gala in the evening which she heard was a great success (she had to fly out to Las Vegas to report to True Parents) – with lovely dancers and a comedian who brought down the roof. True Parents and (especially) True Mother were delighted to hear that the WFWP had completed its 19th conference
3. Whenever In Jin Nim visits True Parents she always is so grateful – realizing what an incredible time we are living in. She likes to say that this is the time of the breaking news. Jesus Christ brought the good news – truly helping all of humanity to understand the meaning of what it is to truly love one another and encouraging women to live an inspired and true life. But now is the time of the breaking news because now we are not only talking about understanding and substantiating and applying true love and true life in our lives but really coming to substantiate the true lineage of God – grafting on to the heavenly lineage and becoming one family under God. So – it is an incredibly exciting time for all of us here working in the Ministry
4. As we think about each Sunday and what topics and issues will be discussed – they (Lovin' Life team) are always tickled pink when they realize that so much of the inspiration comes from the enthusiasm of the young people which they show to the Lovin' Life Ministry every Sunday – and enthusiasm that is shared all around the country in 100 different satellite locations across America. "We know that when we can see and experience the inspired youth, truly encouraged in the spirit of true love – wanting to build that ideal family, society, nation, and world, we know that it is not just a dream that we are dealing with, when we think or ponder or ruminate on the topic on this beautiful world of peace, but it is something tangible, something that we are working towards each and every day, something that we can build upon starting with you and me."
5. As In Jin Nim was taking the trip to Las Vegas, on the way back going through LA they had to wait for a plane to come and replace the plane they were supposed to be on. And so they had some delay time. People started gathering in small groups and talking with each other. And In Jin Nim noticed in one corner three young teenage girls. They were beautiful girls huddled together looking at fashion magazines. Glamour, Elle, Cosmopolitan, People, Us, (and others). They were pointing at different people and things exclaiming, "I want to be like her, I want to have that, she has legs 6 miles long, her body is perfect, 36-24-32." In Jin Nim listened to their conversation – "you know, these people they have it all, they're beautiful, they have their cars, mansions, iPods and iPad's, fabulous girlfriends and boyfriends, all the designer clothes (In Jin Nim named the brands and designers – "they knew their stuff" – designer bags and shoes). When I become rich and successful these are the things that I want!"
6. These ladies were between 15 and 17. They were infused with this incredible desire – wanting the latest designer clothing and bags (In Jin Nim gave several designer names). It is interesting how, it doesn't matter where we come from, what culture we are born into, what race we belong to – in the journey through life, on the road of life where we come to understand what we are all about and who we are and what we need to do and what kind of people we need to be – there is this word that we come face-to-face with from time to time – the word 'desire.'
7. Many times we say to ourselves that we desire things. We desire all these things that we want to acquire – we desire. In Jin Nim often thinks, yes we desire all these things, we desire X – (fill in the box). But many times in life there are other things at play, not just we as individuals, but there are also supernatural things at play, there are th

'Louis Burns & Austin Tiny House'
Whether it's driven by economics, minimalism, voluntary simplicity, or the desire to be more friendly to our planet, the mobile 'tiny house' is finding it's way into driveways, backyards, and wide-open spaces throughout the USA. But why?

For more about Austin Tiny House and Mr. Burns' philosophy regarding building tiny houses, see www.austintinyhouse.com, especially the 'About' section (presented below):
"Austin Tiny House was born out of necessity.
That’s not a global climate change necessity though it helps with that too. It was born out of the idea that I needed a place to live and wasn’t interested in flushing more rent money down the tubes. That necessity led me to a small but growing movement of people seeking greater simplicity and freedom in their lives.
Austin Tiny House was also born out of my observations as a past Realtor, an attempted investor and a customer service rep for a major mortgage company. Houses just aren’t what they used to be. Most people that have them do because that’s what everyone else does, right? Isn’t that the American dream? Home ownership? At any cost?
So you go to school, get a good job, get married, get a house, start having kids, start racking up debt, etc. That’s the way it’s supposed to go right?
Maybe the kids move back in briefly before getting totally out on their own. But now as our parents age, sometimes one of them ends up needing a place to stay too. A spare room would really be nice then.
Maybe you want to invest in real estate but the realization that most "real estate investors" are really just regular folks with two mortgages chasing too few tenants and it isn’t all that appealing anymore. And who’s lending on non-owner occupied properties anymore without perfect credit and a large down payment? What if you could lower the bar to entry?
Contrary to popular belief, most people who lose their homes are from rising taxes, not the state of the national economy. They buy at the top of what they can afford and then their taxes go up and they can’t afford their payment anymore. What if your house was mobile enough to not be taxed as property?
The economy is changing too. The job market is more fluid than ever. Used to be if you changed jobs every few years or less, it was best to rent. Since you don’t recoup your cost of buying a house until you’re at least 5 years into it (at a minimum appreciation rate), you’d be losing money if you bought. What if you could take home ownership with you?
What if you like the freedom of an RV or mobile home but not the thin walls or the transient feel of it? And how about being restricted to "parks" with hookups? Many people prefer the flexibility of being able to live on any given street there’s an available property. What if you could have the best of both worlds?
If you survey the tiny house landscape, there are some beautiful things being built. Mostly what’s being sold are plans. If you want one already built, that would set you back $40,000 to $50,000 as an entry price. Since those aren’t going to qualify for regular mortgages, they are out of most people’s reach without deep pockets, extensive credit or some home equity to draw from.
Most of those tiny houses need RV hookups or permits for permanent utilities. They aren’t off grid enough to go anywhere most people would want to live. What if the home you own can be relocated anywhere you can plug in an extension cord and garden hose? Plug and play is where it’s at.
If you have a source of income and average credit, you can probably get a $10,000-$20,000 personal loan from your bank. What if that $100-$200 payment was your new house payment? Or if you have that much saved up to be a down payment for a regular house, what if that was enough to pay for a house in full? Would that free you up from a lot of worry related to paying a mortgage or maintaining a large home? I think so.
Whether you agree or not, this is a growing trend in the real estate industry. Check back here and watch as we build them here in the Austin area. If you find it all a fascinating concept, perhaps we’ll be building you on

This weekend, continuing its sharp multi-episode focus on the intersection of money and politics, Moyers & Company explores the tight connection between Wall Street and the White House with David Stockman – yes, that David Stockman — former budget director for President Reagan.
Now a businessman who says he was “taken to the woodshed” for telling the truth about the administration’s tax policies, Stockman speaks candidly with Bill Moyers about how money dominates politics, distorting free markets and endangering democracy. “As a result,” Stockman says, “we have neither capitalism nor democracy. We have crony capitalism.”
Stockman shares details on how the courtship of politics and high finance have turned our economy into a private club that rewards the super-rich and corporations, leaving average Americans wondering how it could happen and who’s really in charge.
“We now have an entitled class of Wall Street financiers and of corporate CEOs who believe the government is there to do… whatever it takes in order to keep the game going and their stock price moving upward,” Stockman tells Moyers.
Also on the show, Moyers talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter and columnist Gretchen Morgenson on how money and political clout enable industries to escape regulation and enrich executives at the top.
