Deanna Durbin - Because (movie version)
Performer - Deanna Durbin Lyrics - Edward Frederick Lockton (using the alias "Edward Teschemacher") Music - Helen Rhodes (pen name "Guy d'Hardelot") Because, you come to me, with naught save love, and hold my hand and lift mine eyes above, a wider world of hope and joy I see, because you come to me! Because you speak to me in accent sweet, I find the roses waking `round my feet, and I am led through tears and joy to thee, because you speak to me! Because God made thee mine, I'll cherish thee, through light and darkness through all time to be, and pray His love may make our love divine, because God made thee mine! ______________________________________ Written in 1902, this was first recorded by Enrico Caruso. It has the distinction of being one of the first major songs composed by a woman. A popular wedding song, Deanna Durbin performed this during the wedding scene in "Three Smart Girls Grow Up" and again in real life at her sister's wedding. This performance was recorded in 1938.

Schubert - Ave Maria - Deanna Durbin
Deanna Durbin, at age 18, singing Franz Schubert's masterpiece. Here is what Schubert had to say about this song, in a letter to his father: "My new songs from Scott's 'Lady of the Lake' especially had much success. They also wondered greatly at my piety, which I expressed in a hymn to the Holy Virgin and which, it appears, grips every soul and turns it to devotion." ________________________________________ Ave Maria Gratia plena Maria, gratia plena Maria, gratia plena Ave, ave dominus Dominus tecum Benedicta tu in mulieribus Et benedictus Et benedictus fructus ventris Tuae, Jesus. Ave Maria Ave Maria Mater Dei Ora pro nobis peccatoribus Ora, ora pro nobis Ora, ora pro nobis peccatoribus Nunc et in hora mortis In hora mortis nostrae In hora mortis, mortis nostrae In hora mortis nostrae Ave Maria Amen __________________________________________ Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. ______________________________________ The close-ups are of her co-stars in the film: Kay Francis, Walter Pidgeon, Cecilia Loftis, Lewis Howard, Samuel S. Hinds, and the wonderful SZ Sakall (Carl the waiter from Casablanca) in his American film debut.

"Spring Parade" (1940) Starring Deanna Durbin, Robert Cummings, SZ "Cuddles" Sakall, Allyn Joslyn, Mischa Auer and many other favourites. Directed by Henry Koster. Photographed by Joseph Valentine. Screenplay by Bruce Manning & Felix Jackson. Songs (mostly) by Gus Kahn & Robert Stolz. Produced by Universal. I've uploaded this copy of "Spring Parade" because: a) it (along with "It's a Date") is not available on any official DVD anywhere, to the best of my knowledge; b) the version available on YT at the time of posting is even worse than this one.

Deanna Durbin - Amapola
Deanna Durbin, at age 17, sings the popular song "Amapola" by Joseph LaCalle, from the movie "First Love". "First Love" is a wonderful movie adaptation of Cinderella. Deanna Durbin as a modern day (well, 1930s modern) Cinderella is quite charming - this is one of her very best movies.

Deanna Durbin - Danny Boy
Performer - Deanna Durbin Lyrics - Frederick Weatherly The famous ballad "Danny Boy", ironically, was written by a man who never set foot in Ireland. Weatherly, an English barrister who was also a prolific poet, had originally set "Danny Boy" to music he had composed. The song was not successful. When he heard the "Londonderry Air", he realized that "Danny Boy" would fit nicely to that tune. Over 100 songs have been set to "Londonderry Air", but "Danny Boy" is the most famous. Band and orchestral musicians will also recognize the tune as Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry". Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling, From glen to glen and down the mountain side; The summer's gone, and all the roses falling; It's you, it's you must go, and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow; I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow; Danny boy, Oh Danny boy, I love you so. But if ye come and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be. Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I will know, 'though soft ye tread around me, And then my grave shall richer sweeter be, Then you'll bend down and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

Deanna Durbin - The Last Rose of Summer
Performer - Deanna Durbin Words - Thomas Moore Music - John Stevenson This is from the movie "Three Smart Girls Grow Up". The song was recorded just before Durbin's 17th birthday, in late 1938. 'Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming all alone, All her lovely companions Are faded and gone. No flower of her kindred, No rose bud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh.

Deanna Durbin - Vienna Boys Choir - Ave Maria - Bach/Gounod
Deanna Durbin and the Vienna Boys Choir (Wiener Sängerknaben) perform the Bach - Gounod setting of Ave Maria. This performance was filmed in the fall of 1937, when Durbin was 15 years old. The movie it is taken from is "Mad About Music". Thanks for dholl17 for pointing out that the boys choir you see is the St. Luke's Choristers from Long Beach, CA. However they are just mouthing the words that Deanna Durbin and the Vienna Boys Choir had already recorded. *Note - this is the second version I've posted. The earlier version simply had too much distortion. This time, I've made a new master DVD from my original tape and uploaded with a program which allows for higher quality sound transfers, and I hope the listener will now be able to appreciate a little bit more how Miss Durbin sounded. Still, considering the recording was made in 1937 with primitive equipment by today's standards, there is no way to know just how great her voice was.*

Deanna Durbin - Annie Laurie
Lyrics - William Douglas Music - Alicia Scott Performer - Deanna Durbin Recorded in 1936 by a 14 year old Deanna Durbin. The maturity of her voice is remarkable here. Maxwelton's braes are bonnie, Where early fa's the dew, 'Twas there that Annie Laurie Gi'ed me her promise true. Gi'ed me her promise true - Which ne'er forgot will be, And for bonnie Annie Laurie I'd lay me down and dee. Her brow is like the snaw-drift, Her neck is like the swan, Her face it is the fairest, That 'er the sun shone on. That 'er the sun shone on - And dark blue is her e'e, And for bonnie Annie Laurie I'd lay me down and dee. Like dew on gowans lying, Is the fa' o' her fairy feet, And like winds, in simmer sighing, Her voice is low and sweet. Her voice is low and sweet - And she's a' the world to me; And for bonnie Annie Laurie I'd lay me down and dee.

Lover, when I'm near you
And I hear you, speak my name
Softly, in my ear you breathe a flame
Lover, when we're dancing
Keep on glancing in my eyes
Till loves own entrancing music dies
All of my future is in you
You're every plan I design
Promise you'll always continue
To be mine
Lover, please be tender
When you're tender, fears depart
Lover, I surrender to my heart
Lover, it's immoral
But why quarrel with our bliss
When two lips of coral want to kiss
I say the devil is in you
And to resist you, I try
But if you didn't continue
I would die
Lover, please be tender
When you're tender, fears depart
Lover, I surrender to my heart!
Rodgers and Hart were an American songwriting partnership between composer Richard Rodgers (1902--1979) and the lyricist Lorenz Hart (1895--1943). They worked together on 28 stage musicals and more than 500 songs from 1919 until Hart's death in 1943.
Comparisons between Rodgers and Hart and the successor team of Rodgers and Hammerstein are inevitable. Hammerstein's lyrics project warmth, sincere optimism, and occasional corniness. Hart's lyrics showed greater sophistication in subject matter, more use of overt verbal cleverness, and more of a "New York" or "Broadway" sensibility. The archetypal Rodgers and Hart song, "Manhattan," rhymes "The great big city's a wondrous toy/Just made for a girl and boy" in the first stanza, then reprises with "The city's glamor can never spoil/The dreams of a boy and goil" in the last. Many of the songs ("Falling in Love with Love", "Little Girl Blue", "My Funny Valentine") are wistful or sad, and emotional ambivalence seems to be perceptible in the background of even the sunnier songs. For example, "You Took Advantage of Me" appears to be an evocation of amorous joy, but the very title suggests some doubt as to whether the relationship is mutual or exploitative.
Rodgers, as a creator of melodies, ranks with Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin.
+++
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small:
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
- - Isaac Watts
O God, You have taught me from my
youth; And to this day I declare
Your wondrous works. Now also when
I am old and gray headed, O God,
do not forsake me, Until I declare
Your strength to this generation,
Your power to everyone who is to come.

Deanna Durbin - Perhaps
Deanna Durbin performs a song from the movie "Nice Girl?" Music: Aldo Franchetti Lyrics: Andres deSegurola Of all the songs written for Deanna Durbin, this one has the most interesting history. Basically, Aldo Franchetti, with the help of Deanna's producer, Joe Pasternak, plagiarized the first half of this song from another composer. The full story is at this link: cip.law.ucla.edu

Deanna Durbin - Silent Night
From the movie "Lady on a Train" (1945) "Lady on a Train" is one of Durbin's better movies, especially among her later efforts. However, critics at the time were vicious with mostly negative reviews. They wouldn't let her grow - the demand was for her to play light comedy with lots of singing, and nothing else. However, the clever noir-comedy-murder mystery is well-received by critics today. Still, I have to hand it to Time magazine for the nastiest yet most hilarious review, especially in its description of this particular scene: "Lolling on a bed, she sings Silent Night to her father by long-distance telephone, while the camera treats her the way John Gilbert used to treat Garbo, in a manner that must be seen to be believed. For fanciers of the strange and terrible, Miss Durbin's quietly orgiastic salute to the Nativity is a must."
