On 24 February 1989, United Airlines Flight 811 was flying above the Pacific Ocean when part of the right-side fuselage was ripped off, ejecting nine people from the aircraft and causing explosive decompression. The flight later landed safely at Honolulu without any more loss of life. An electrical short circuit caused the cargo door to open, creating the explosive decompression. During Hurricane Hugo on 15 September 1989, a Lockheed WP-3D Orion was intercepting the hurricane over the Caribbean islands when strong winds jolted the aircraft and caused an engine to fail. The pilots managed to make an emergency landing. The Lockheed WP-3D Orion is a highly modified P-3 Orion used by the Aircraft Operations Center division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Only two of these craft exist, each incorporating numerous features for the role of collecting weather information. During hurricane season, the WP-3Ds are deployed for duty as hurricane hunters. The WP-3Ds are equipped with three weather radars, C band radars in the nose and on the lower fuselage, and an X-band radar in the aircraft's tail. They are also equipped with the ability to deploy dropsondes into storm systems, and have onboard temperature sensors, and other meteorological equipment. The aircraft are not specially strengthened for flying into hurricanes, however their decks were reinforced to withstand the additional equipment load. It has two barber-pole samplers (named for their red-and-white stripes) which protrude from the aircraft’s front, a tail Doppler weather radar, and other unique-looking instruments hanging from the wing.

http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com – AeroLites began producing ultralight aircraft in the early 1980s. In 1989 it purchased the design rights, manufacturing rights, and tooling for the Ag Master from Jack Hutchison of Hutchison aircraft. They then renamed the plane, the AeroMaster. The AeroMaster is a very unique aircraft in that it is designed to be a very rugged and affordable spray plane for farmers. In fact, I had the opportunity to visit Louisiana and fly the AeroMaster. Powered by a Rotax 582 65 hp engine, loaded with chemical the aircraft jumped off the ground in less than 250 feet. Climb rate was well over 700 ft./m, and cruise speed came in at 75 mph. According to the manufacturer the plane will pay for itself in less than four years, when compared to having a commercial sprayer operator come in and spray your property. The aircraft is constructed of 4130 chromoly steel tubing, uses aluminum ladder style construction in the wings, which are covered in Dacron sailcloth. The plane is 18'5" long, 7 feet high and has a wingspan of 28'7" with a total wing area of 145 ft. This gives the aircraft, a wing loading up 6.86 pounds per square foot. When flown without the spray equipment attached aircraft is quite capable of climbing at 1200 ft./m. Stall speed comes in at 25 mph. With the standard 10 gallon fuel tank. You have approximately 2 hours of flight time, or roughly 150 mile range. The spray tank is 30 gallons and has an emergency dump system. Building time is between 120 and 200 hours. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine.
