The 4 "-tions" of Singing: Phonation
Healthy singing is a product of properly coordinating four processes: respiration (breathing), phonation (vocal-fold vibration), resonation (amplification), and articulation (shaping the sound using articulators). As air passes through adducted vocal folds, pressure drops causing the folds to oscillate. This relationship between pressure and energy result in the Bernoulli effect.

Vocal Folds Appearance Upon Phonation as Seen by Using 70 Degree Rigid Endoscopy & Videostroboscopy
Our vocal folds vibrate at high rates which is not usually visible upon endoscopic laryngeal examination. The fundamental frequency is highest amongst neaonates, infants, and children followed by adult females and males. It mucosal cover and superficial lamina propria propagates from below to upward direction and causes the phenomena of mucosal waves. Mucosal waves are visible on videostroboscopy and more pronounce at low frequency. At high pitch the vocal fold lengthens and more tense along sagittal axis. This video shows the comparison of glottic appearance at various pitch intensity while the patient phonating vowel "e" by using two diagnostic techniques.

Movements of Vocal Process of Arytenoid Upon Phonation
This video shows the movements of arytenoid vocal process upon phonation. The pyramidal-shaped arytenoid cartilage sits on the upper surface of the cricoid cartilage on its supero-lateral aspect. It is a saddle synovial joint which allows arching movements along the transverse axis of the articular facet. The movement is better seen inferiorly by retrograde trans-tracheostomal or via a T-tube/fenestrated tracheostomy tube. Please note as the vocal folds adduct, the vocal process moves medially and slightly tilted downwards. [White dot- tip of vocal process, yellow triangle- vocal process of arytenoid, curve interrupted line-the medially rotated articular facet of the cricoid cartilage medial edge].

Tibetan ventricular Phonation in "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" !
The 2005 film "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" , directed by Scott Derrickson, was based on a true exorcism story that happened to Anneliese Michel, a german lady. A great Hollywood success, the film contains a tribunal scene where the prosecutor asks Father Moore about the possibility of Emily Rose, a 19 year-old girl, using vocal-ventricular phonation, as employed by Tibetan monks, for obtainig two sounds at the same time. Interestingly, the first documented explanation of the role of the false vocal folds in Tibetan Chant, together with the "true" vocal folds, is found on the 1998 paper "A self-sustained vocal-ventricular phonation mode: acoustical, aerodynamic and glottographic evidences", by Leonardo Fuks, Britta Hammarberg & Johan Sundberg:KTH TMH-QPSR 3/1998, 49-59, Stockholm. This paper is part of Leonardo Fuks´ PhD Thesis FROM AIR TO MUSIC - Acoustical, physiological and perceptual aspects of reed wind instrument playing and vocal-ventricular fold phonation,1999, KTH-Sweden. The vocal mechanism suggested by the prosecutor is imprecise and very confusing. Had Father Moore read that particular paper, he would have demolished the prosecutor´s arguments! :) The same results regarding the co-oscillation of true (vocal) and false (ventricular) folds in Tibetan chant were expanded and corroborated by the following 2001 paper: PA Lindestad, M Sodersten, B Merker and S Granqvist. Voice source characteristics in Mongolian throat singing studied with high-speed imaging ...
