SIPRI North America Launch Full Version
SIPRI North America Launch February 6th marked the official launch for the SIPRI's new North American office at the Washington DC based House of Sweden. Over 150 participants attended the event, including senior level government officials, leaders in the think tank and NGO community and well-known academics from the universities in Washington DC. Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and former US National Security Advisor Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski were the featured speakers. In a wide ranging dialogue, they touched upon many of the key issues that SIPRI North America will cover, such as , nonproliferation and developments related to Iran, the rise of China, Afghanistan and the regional implications of the drawdown of international troops and the need for continued strong relationships between the United States and Europe. They agreed that efforts need to focus on transatlantic relationships that are structured to transcend short-term shocks, such as the ongoing economic crisis, yet have the flexibility to endure long-term changes in the international system. The discussion was animated by SIPRI Director Dr Bates Gill. For more information about us please see www.sipri.org/northamerica.

Bates Gill reflects on his time as SIPRI Director
After a successful five-year term, Dr Bates Gill is to step down as SIPRI Director and the institute has launched an international search for his successor. "For SIPRI, and for me professionally, we are at a good transitional moment," Gill said. "SIPRI has concluded a remarkable period of expansion and institutional achievement, and is now poised for its next ascent." Gill added, "The next SIPRI Director will have a great opportunity to work with a dynamic international staff operating around the globe, and further build SIPRI's worldwide reputation and impact." Following his work at SIPRI, Gill will return to a focus on US policy in the Asia-Pacific region as the CEO of the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. In seeking Gill's successor, SIPRI will carry out an international search, with a focus on those who can bring strategic vision, world-class leadership and high professional standing to the position. Qualified candidates of any nationality are encouraged to apply.

SIPRI Yearbook 2012 launch seminar: introductory remarks by SIPRI Director Bates Gill
On 14 June 2012, to coincide with the launch of SIPRI Yearbook 2012, SIPRI held a seminar on countering the illegal trade in arms and dual-use items. Controlling the trade in 'dual-use items'—goods and technologies that could have both civilian and military applications—is the most important practical tool a country has to prevent the illegal transfers in goods and technologies that could be used for developing nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons; or their means of delivery. This video features introductory remarks from the launch seminar by SIPRI's Director, Bates Gill.

The hardware of Paradise
