The Florida Geological Survey Digital Collection includes historic resources from the Florida Geological Survey (FGS). FGS is an Office which reports directly to the Deputy Secretary for Land & Recreation in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The mission of the FGS is to collect, interpret, disseminate, store and maintain geologic data, thereby contributing to the responsible use and understanding of Florida's natural resources, and to conserve the State of Florida's oil and gas resources and minimize environmental impacts from exploration and production operations. Lone Wolf vs Sow Grizzly with cubs for Elk Carcass
A wolf feeds on a road-killed elk carcass in the morning. A grizzly bear with two cubs feeds on the carcass in the evening. A grizzly bear will chuff and pop its jaw when it feels threatened. Sometimes it will also charge at the threat, usually veering off or stopping short -- a bluff charge. Early the next morning a grizzly bear with cubs chuffs and bluff charges a wolf. The wolf appears to be alone and, at times, postures as if it is playing. Video camera was triggered by a motion sensor (Make sure you have your sound on for this; note: at one point there a loud sound that is wind). August 10, 2007. Glacier National Park. Remote Video Footage by USGS Northern Divide Bear Project and Glacier National Park. Original Video at : nrmsc.usgs.gov Subscribe to me if you want more of such videos.

About the British Geological Survey | 175 years of geoscience
The British Geological Survey is a part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is its principal supplier of national capability in geoscience. It advances understanding of the structure, properties and processes of the solid Earth system through interdisciplinary surveys, monitoring and research for the benefit of society. It is the UK's premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and knowledge for wealth creation, sustainable use of natural resources, reducing risk and living with the impacts of environmental change. We are a world-leading geoscience centre for: • survey and monitoring • modelling and research • data and knowledge

William Smith Building (WSB), British Geological Survey, Keyworth time lapse construction project
The construction project started in December 2007, was occupied by BGS staff in May 2009 and is due to be officially opened on the 25th June 2009. The William Smith Building (WSB) is the newest addition to the British Geological Survey (BGS) headquarters in Nottingham. At 3000m², the WSB is the largest wooden-framed open-plan office building in the UK . The WSB was built to the highest environmental standards, within the two-year timescale and just under the £7m budget. It incorporates cedar and terracotta cladding, sheeps wool insulation, under-floor heating and an atrium covered with the same plastic panels used in the Eden Project domes, Cornwall, UK see www.bgs.ac.uk/contacts/sites/keyworth/WS_Building.html for further details

Marin Tsunami
The Marin coast could be struck by a tsunami. Whether you live in Marin County, visit the beaches, or rent or own a home near the coast, it is vital to understand the tsunami threat and take preparation seriously.
MARIN TSUNAMI tells the story of what several West Marin communities are doing to be prepared.
This video was produced by Marin County Office of Emergency Services and the US Geological Survey to help people prepare for a tsunami emergency.

7 days of earthquakes in Japan
Recently I have been in continuous contact with my friends in Japan, who are all living in Tokyo. Fortunately, they are all fine. The big Sendai earthquake and the following tsunami did not harm them directly. But - besides the nuclear danger - there are many aftershocks happening all the time. A friend told me that Tokyo feels like pudding, another one told me on saturday that the earth is shaking every 30 minutes, and earthquakes are regularly occurring in the middle of skype conversations. For me, and especially for my friends in Japan this is a tremendous psychological challenge - even if those earthquakes are not as strong as the big one. But you never know…
Well, yesterday night this led me to the idea of trying to visualize that feeling - a timelapse of 5+ earthquakes from the past 7 days. What you see is a screencapture of a program that I wrote overnight. Thanks to the XML feed of the US Geological Survey, the program is running live and updates automatically.
Many thanks go to Mahir M. Yavuz, Ritornell and mimu merz for their immediate help and support.

Ontario Geological Survey
This summer I had the privilege to work with the Ontario Geological Survey on their summer field program. I worked on three unique projects that took me around the province of Ontario, and I worked with a great crew.
Throughout the summer I filmed the day to day work of each project, to put together this promotional video for potential summer students interested in a job with the Ontario Geological Survey.
Hope you enjoy the short video and if you are interested in a fun and adventure filled job for the summer apply to the OGS. They take summer student applications from all over Canada.

USGS Science: Walrus Haul-Out 2011
Female Pacific walruses and their calves traditionally spend summers far from shore, diving for benthic invertebrates over the shallow continental shelf waters of the Chukchi Sea. These female walruses and their calves prefer to rest between forage bouts on sea ice drifting above their feeding grounds. However, in recent years loss of summer sea ice over the continental shelf has forced many walruses to travel to the northwest coast of Alaska where they haul-out on shore to rest. This large herd of walruses hauled out near Pt. Lay Alaska in August of 2011.
