Neighbours Clucking Over Poultry Farm Pitch
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http SAANICH - Gordon Alberg grew up milking cows on his parent's farm off Mount Douglas X-Road but those days are long gone. His parents have passed, and the plan since his dad quit farming was to develop the property. "We weren't looking for the highest bidder and the best dollar. We're looking for a legacy and put a lot of effort into the eco of the design, saving the oak trees, our drainage system fed into the roots." Alberg says the family worked for years with Saanich planners designing the development and got most of the neighbours on board. "To us it looked appropriate, it looked good" says Marc Vukobrat. But Alberg got a rude awakening in front of Saanich council. "We sat there white in the face, as they one by one rejected it one after the other. Except Mayor Leonard, who said be careful what you wish for." Leonard says it's a file where principle meets the practical. "I understand their frustration. This was a property identified to come out of the agricultural land reserve and be developed for 30 years, and all the properties around it have done so." Councillors opposed to the plan say the days of pulling too many properties out of the Agricultural Land Reserve are over. "This is viable agricultural land. We want to retain the pockets of agriculture where they exist" says Councillor Dean Murdock. Alberg says you can only farm 10-15% of his land, and even there the soil isn't good because everywhere else you look you find bedrock. So ...

Poultry & The Hormone Myth (long version)
One of the most common, and frustrating, questions for US poultry producers is why hormones are used to produce today's poultry products. Of course, the actual answer is NO HORMONES are used. To address this continuing misinformation, US Poultry & Egg Association has prepared a new video to explain the scientific, economic and legal reasons hormones are not needed or used by the US poultry industry. There are two versions of the video (long & short). The short version is precise and gets to the gist of the video's message quickly. The long version provides more detail for those who are interested. This is the long version.

Poultry are farmed in great numbers with chickens being the most numerous. More than 50 billion chickens are raised annually as a source of food, for both their meat and their eggs. Chickens raised for eggs are usually called laying hens whilst chickens raised for meat are often called broilers. In total, the UK alone consumes over 29 million eggs per day. In the US, the national organization overseeing poultry production is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the UK, the national organisation is the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Poultry Internet-Mixed Reality Lab, Adrian David Cheok
Poultry Internet - Mixed Reality Lab, Singapore, Adrian David Cheok : Poultry are one of the most badly treated animals in the modern world. It has been shown that they have high levels of both cognition and feelings and as a result there has been a recent trend of promoting poultry welfare. There is also a tradition of keeping poultry as pets in some parts of the world. However in modern cities and societies it is often difficult to maintain contact with pets, particularly for office workers. We propose and describe a novel cybernetics system to use mobile and Internet technology to improve human-to-pet interaction. It can also be used for people who are allergic to touching animals and thus cannot stroke them directly. This interaction encompasses both visualization and tactile sensation of real objects.
