Nigel Pennick plays melodica on his track "Pablo Fanque". Pablo Fanque was the stage name of William Darby, born in Norwich, England, in 1796. One of the greatest horsemen of his time, he worked in the circus of the famous horseman Ducrow before setting up his own circus, the Circus Royal. Fanque was thus one of the first black Britons to set up his own successful business, which toured the country for many years. His memory was recalled when John Lennon wrote the lyrics of ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite’ recorded on the Beatles album “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (1967). The Beatles' lyrics were based upon the text of a poster for Pablo Fanque’s Circus Royal, though in the song Lennon changed it to “Pablo Fanque’s fair” to make a rhyme with “there”. Andrey Shilov plays "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney - song from the 1967 album by the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". It was primarily written and composed by John Lennon, although Paul McCartney has recently stated that he also contributed to it. The song is credited to Lennon–McCartney. The inspiration to write the song was a 19th-century circus poster for Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal appearance at Rochdale, that Lennon purchased in an antique shop on 31 January 1967, while filming the promotional videos for "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in Sevenoaks, Kent. Lennon claimed years later to still have the poster in his home. "Everything from the song is from that poster," he explained, "except the horse wasn't called Henry." On 31 January 1967, while The Beatles were in Sevenoaks, Kent, making a promotional film for Strawberry Fields Forever, John Lennon wandered in to an antique shop close to their hotel. There he bought a framed Victorian circus poster from 1843.
The poster announced Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal, coming to Town Meadows in Rochdale. It grandly announced that the circus would be for the benefit of Mr Kite, and would feature "Mr J Henderson the celebrated somerset thrower" and Zanthus the horse.
Mr Kite was William Kite, a performer and the son of circus owner James Kite. In 1810 he had founded Kite's Pavilion Circus and later moved to Wells' Circus. It is thought that he worked in Pablo Fanques' fair between 1843 and 1845. Fanque, pictured below, was Britain's first black circus owner. He was born William Darby in Norwich in 1796.
Lennon hung the poster in his music room at his home in Weybridge, and began to use it as inspiration for a song. Some of the facts he changed - the circus was coming to Bishopsgate rather than Rochdale; the horse became Henry; the circus became a fair; Mr Kite was 'late of Wells's Circus' rather that of Pablo Fanque (pictured below); and Mr Henderson, rather than Mr Kite, promised to challenge the world.
Minor changes aside, the words of the poster found their way almost unchanged into Lennon's Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!, which closed the first half of the Sgt Pepper album. Lennon sat at his piano and sang phrases from the poster until he had the song, possibly with help from McCartney.
Lennon was later dismissive of the song, as revealed in a range of interview snippets collated in the Anthology book.
I wrote that as a pure poetic job, to write a song sitting there. I had to write because it was time to write. And I had to write it quick because otherwise I wouldn't have been on the album. So I had to knock off a few songs. I knocked off A Day In The Life, or my section of it, and whatever we were talking about, Mr Kite, or something like that. I was very paranoid in those days, I could hardly move.

The whole song is from a Victorian poster, which I bought in a junk shop. It is so cosmically beautiful. It's a poster for a fair that must have happened in the 1800s. Everything in the song is from that poster, except the horse wasn't called Henry. Now, there were all kinds of stories about Henry the Horse being heroin. I had never seen heroin in that period. No, it's all just from that poster. The song is pure, like a painting, a pure watercolour.

Paul McCartney added Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite! to the setlist of his Out There tour in 2013. In a July 2013 interview with Rolling Stone he said he had co-written the song with Lennon.
Mr Kite! is such a crazy, oddball song that I thought it would freshen up the set. Plus the fact that I'd never done it. None of us in the Beatles ever did that song [in concert]. And I have great memories of writing it with John. I read, occasionally, people say, 'Oh, John wrote that one.' I say, 'Wait a minute, what was that afternoon I spent with him, then, looking at this poster?' He happened to have a poster in his living room at home. I was out at his house, and we just got this idea, because the poster said 'Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite' – and then we put in, you know, 'there will be a show tonight,' and then it was like, 'of course,' then it had 'Henry the Horse dances the waltz.' Pablo Fanque (born William Darby 28 February 1796 in Norwich,England ; died 4 May 1871 in Stockport, England) was the first black circus proprietor in Britain. His circus, in which he himself was a performer, was the most popular circus in Victorian Britain for 30 years, a period that is regarded as the golden age of the circus. Today, Pablo Fanque is best known from his mention in The Beatles song "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Little is known about Pablo Fanque’s early life. Church records suggest that he was one of at least five children born to John and Mary Darby (née Stamp) of Norwich. They were believed to have resided in Ber Street. Fanque reportedly declared his late father's occupation as "butler" on his marriage certificate in 1848. John M. Turner, Fanque's biographer, speculates that "his father was African-born and had been brought to the port of Norwich and trained as a house servant." Fanque was reportedly orphaned at a young age. Another account has Fanque born in a workhouse to a family of seven children.

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founder members of The Beatles, one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. Together with Paul McCartney, he formed one of the most celebrated songwriting partnerships of the 20th century.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved as a teenager in the skiffle craze; his first band, The Quarrymen, evolved into The Beatles in 1960. As the group disintegrated towards the end of the decade, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to devote time to raising his infant son Sean, but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.

Pablo Fanque by Nigel Pennick
Nigel Pennick plays melodica on his track "Pablo Fanque". Pablo Fanque was the stage name of William Darby, born in Norwich, England, in 1796. One of the greatest horsemen of his time, he worked in the circus of the famous horseman Ducrow before setting up his own circus, the Circus Royal. Fanque was thus one of the first black Britons to set up his own successful business, which toured the country for many years. His memory was recalled when John Lennon wrote the lyrics of ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite’ recorded on the Beatles album “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (1967). The Beatles' lyrics were based upon the text of a poster for Pablo Fanque’s Circus Royal, though in the song Lennon changed it to “Pablo Fanque’s fair” to make a rhyme with “there”. Andrey Shilov plays "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney - song from the 1967 album by the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". It was primarily written and composed by John Lennon, although Paul McCartney has recently stated that he also contributed to it. The song is credited to Lennon–McCartney. The inspiration to write the song was a 19th-century circus poster for Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal appearance at Rochdale, that Lennon purchased in an antique shop on 31 January 1967, while filming the promotional videos for "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in Sevenoaks, Kent. On 31 January 1967, while The Beatles were in Sevenoaks, Kent, making a promotional film for Strawberry Fields Forever, John Lennon wandered in to an antique shop close to their hotel. There he bought a framed Victorian circus poster from 1843. The poster announced Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal, coming to Town Meadows in Rochdale. It grandly announced that the circus would be for the benefit of Mr Kite, and would feature "Mr J Henderson the celebrated somerset thrower" and Zanthus the horse. Mr Kite was William Kite, a performer and the son of circus owner James Kite. In 1810 he had founded Kite's Pavilion Circus and later moved to Wells' Circus. Andrey Shilov plays "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney - song from the 1967 album by the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". It was primarily written and composed by John Lennon, although Paul McCartney has recently stated that he also contributed to it. The song is credited to Lennon–McCartney. The inspiration to write the song was a 19th-century circus poster for Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal appearance at Rochdale, that Lennon purchased in an antique shop on 31 January 1967, while filming the promotional videos for "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in Sevenoaks, Kent. Lennon claimed years later to still have the poster in his home. "Everything from the song is from that poster," he explained, "except the horse wasn't called Henry." (The poster identifies the horse as "Zanthus."). The song is credited to Lennon–McCartney, but Lennon claimed to have written it entirely himself. McCartney disagrees and in a 2013 Rolling Stone interview states: "I read, occasionally, people say: "Oh, John wrote that one." On 31 January 1967, while The Beatles were in Sevenoaks, Kent, making a promotional film for Strawberry Fields Forever, John Lennon wandered in to an antique shop close to their hotel. There he bought a framed Victorian circus poster from 1843.
The poster announced Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal, coming to Town Meadows in Rochdale. It grandly announced that the circus would be for the benefit of Mr Kite, and would feature "Mr J Henderson the celebrated somerset thrower" and Zanthus the horse.
Mr Kite was William Kite, a performer and the son of circus owner James Kite. In 1810 he had founded Kite's Pavilion Circus and later moved to Wells' Circus. It is thought that he worked in Pablo Fanques' fair between 1843 and 1845. Fanque, pictured below, was Britain's first black circus owner. He was born William Darby in Norwich in 1796.
Lennon hung the poster in his music room at his home in Weybridge, and began to use it as inspiration for a song. Some of the facts he changed - the circus was coming to Bishopsgate rather than Rochdale; the horse became Henry; the circus became a fair; Mr Kite was 'late of Wells's Circus' rather that of Pablo Fanque (pictured below); and Mr Henderson, rather than Mr Kite, promised to challenge the world.
Minor changes aside, the words of the poster found their way almost unchanged into Lennon's Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!, which closed the first half of the Sgt Pepper album. Lennon sat at his piano and sang phrases from the poster until he had the song, possibly with help from McCartney.
Lennon was later dismissive of the song, as revealed in a range of interview snippets collated in the Anthology book.
I wrote that as a pure poetic job, to write a song sitting there. I had to write because it was time to write. And I had to write it quick because otherwise I wouldn't have been on the album. So I had to knock off a few songs. I knocked off A Day In The Life, or my section of it, and whatever we were talking about, Mr Kite, or something like that. I was very paranoid in those days, I could hardly move.

The whole song is from a Victorian poster, which I bought in a junk shop. It is so cosmically beautiful. It's a poster for a fair that must have happened in the 1800s. Everything in the song is from that poster, except the horse wasn't called Henry. Now, there were all kinds of stories about Henry the Horse being heroin. I had never seen heroin in that period. No, it's all just from that poster. The song is pure, like a painting, a pure watercolour.

Mr Kite! is such a crazy, oddball song that I thought it would freshen up the set. Plus the fact that I'd never done it. None of us in the Beatles ever did that song [in concert]. And I have great memories of writing it with John. I read, occasionally, people say, 'Oh, John wrote that one.' I say, 'Wait a minute, what was that afternoon I spent with him, then, looking at this poster?' He happened to have a poster in his living room at home. I was out at his house, and we just got this idea, because the poster said 'Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite' – and then we put in, you know, 'there will be a show tonight,' and then it was like, 'of course,' then it had 'Henry the Horse dances the waltz.' On 31 January 1967, while The Beatles were in Sevenoaks, Kent, making a promotional film for Strawberry Fields Forever, John Lennon wandered in to an antique shop close to their hotel.
There he bought a framed Victorian circus poster from 1843.
The poster announced Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal, coming to Town Meadows in Rochdale.
It grandly announced that the circus would be for the benefit of Mr Kite, and would feature "Mr J Henderson the celebrated somerset thrower" and Zanthus the horse.
Mr Kite was William Kite, a performer and the son of circus owner James Kite. In 1810 he had founded Kite's Pavilion Circus and later moved to Wells' Circus.
It is thought that he worked in Pablo Fanques' fair between 1843 and 1845. Fanque, pictured below, was Britain's first black circus owner. He was born William Darby in Norwich in 1796.
Lennon hung the poster in his music room at his home in Weybridge, and began to use it as inspiration for a song.
Some of the facts he changed - the circus was coming to Bishopsgate rather than Rochdale; the horse became Henry; the circus became a fair;
Mr Kite was 'late of Wells's Circus' rather that of Pablo Fanque (pictured below); and Mr Henderson, rather than Mr Kite, promised to challenge the world.
Minor changes aside, the words of the poster found their way almost unchanged into Lennon's Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!, which closed the first half of the Sgt Pepper album.
Lennon sat at his piano and sang phrases from the poster until he had the song, possibly with help from McCartney.
Lennon was later dismissive of the song, as revealed in a range of interview snippets collated in the Anthology book.

Paul McCartney added Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite! to the setlist of his Out There tour in 2013. In a July 2013 interview with Rolling Stone he said he had co-written the song with Lennon.
"Mr Kite! is such a crazy, oddball song that I thought it would freshen up the set. Plus the fact that I'd never done it. None of us in the Beatles ever did that song [in concert]. And I have great memories of writing it with John. I read, occasionally, people say, 'Oh, John wrote that one.' I say, 'Wait a minute, what was that afternoon I spent with him, then, looking at this poster?' He happened to have a poster in his living room at home. I was out at his house, and we just got this idea, because the poster said 'Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite' – and then we put in, you know, 'there will be a show tonight,' and then it was like, 'of course,' then it had 'Henry the Horse dances the waltz.' You know, whatever. 'The Hendersons, Pablo Fanques, somersets...' We said, 'What was 'somersets'? It must have been an old-fashioned way of saying somersaults.' The song just wrote itself. The calliope was built in 1926 for Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus as their first air-driven calliope. Prior to this they used a steam-driven calliope. She was renamed "Clara-Belle" in honor of three children's entertainment related entities: Clarabell the Clown from "Howdy Doody" (originally portrayed by Bob Keeshan, who later went on to portray "Captain Kangaroo"); Clarabelle the Cow from Walt Disney cartoons; and from the animated show, "Thomas the Tank Engine", who towed two passenger cars, Annie and Clarabel.
"Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite" was originally recorded for the 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by the Beatles. John Lennon wanted a circus-like, carnival feel to this song. Multiple recordings of taped fairground organs and calliope music were spliced together in an attempt to produce this request. After a great deal of experimentation, producer George Martin had his recording engineer Geoff Emerick chop the tape into pieces with scissors, throw them up in the air, and re-assemble them at random.
Lennon was originally inspired to write the song by a 19th century circus poster for Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal, Rochdale, that he purchased in an antique shop on January 31, 1967, while filming video for "Strawberry Fields Forever".

Pink Floyd/Hawkwind -- "Heckty Skies"
With much fanfare, there was an announcement in late 2001 of a newly discovered track, "unknown to the Barrett world. It is rumored to have been recorded in late '67 or early '68 at the BBC Sound Workshop. With lyrics like "couch my disease and chinse covered kisses, glazed calico cloak my costume misses" this is a definite [must] for all Barrett and Floyd collectors. The lyrics are a rewrite of Hilaire Belloc's 'Ballade to Our Lady of Czestochowa.'"
Perhaps somebody got the idea into their head by misinterpreting the lyrics. They seemed to think the first four lines went, "Guttle of white insanity/Counting dread in some vanity/This is hardly paradise/We're off in search of Heckty Skies." The last two words are actually "petty scorn," and there will be no shortage of that.
I'd never before heard this attributed to Syd, but a day or two later I was told in a private email, "The 'Chinese Kisses' track did the rounds a few years ago. It was labeled as a PF '67 BBC Radiophonic Workshop recording and/or some Syd collaboration with some Hawkwind members?? It sounds NOTHING like Syd, and PF did not record anything at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This is confirmed by David Parker's research in Random Precision."
A moot point. It's Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. The song is "Ritz," and the album is The Psychomodo, released in 1974. Their finest, and "Ritz" is arguably the best song on it. (Hawkwind's debut was recorded in 1969, by the way. None of them had done anything to warrant a BBC session in late '67, and none is on record.)
If anyone had asked, we could have crushed this one years ago. As it was, we made certain inquiries. Steve Harley was amused. He confirmed what we already knew: the song has no connection with Syd Barrett. It has even less to do with Belloc, except in somebody's fantasy world. And for the record, the correct lyric is as follows: "Couch my disease in chintz covered kisses/Glazed calico cloth, my costume this is/Come to Pablo Fanque's In Indigo/And we'll show you pastel shades of rhyme."
It was soon announced: "We had doubts if the track was a real Barrett track. We were very hesitant about putting it on our collection. At least we know now, thanks to the Laughing Madcaps group that is not Syd Barrett and we thank you for that."
