Texas to Open Fastest Highway at 85 MPH

New Fastest Highway Coming to America - as part of the news series by GeoBeats. As the old saying goes, 'everything's bigger in Texas' and that phrase now pertains to the speed limit. The Texas Transportation Commission is setting a new driving limit of 85 miles per hour. The 41-mile stretch of road on state highway 130 will have the country's highest speed limit. However, not everyone is ecstatic over the change. An official for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety claims that higher speed limits result in more fatalities. Others believe that the increase was a decision made to boost profits for the toll highway, attracting drivers who are in a hurry. A spokesperson for the Southwestern Insurance Information Service states "If you're looking at an 85 mph speed limit, we could possibly see drivers going 95 up to 100 miles per hour." Despite the protests, the road is slated to open in November. Earlier this year, some officials in UK were in an uproar. The government was planning to hear proposals in favor of raising the speed limit from 70 to 80 miles per hour. What do you think is the ideal highway speed limit?
