Favorite Sites: 20, 28, 34, 35, 56, 65, 96, 107.
Opened in 1938, Hillsborough River State Park is one of Florida's first state parks. This original CCC Park is divided by the swiftly flowing Hillsborough River with a set of Class II rapids. The river provides opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Hikers can walk over seven miles of nature trials: Rapids Trail, Baynard Trail, a sub-section of the Florida Trail and the Wetlands Restoration Trail. The park offers full-facility camping and a youth/group tent campground. It is located about 20 miles north of Tampa.

In early June we took our pop-up to Hillsborough River State which is about an hour from where we live. This is the second trip we've taken in our new (to us) pop-up camper. It was hot, but we stayed very comfortable in the air conditioned camper.
The pop up did not have an awning but it does have accessory tracks on the roof and I used them to rig up an awning with some carriage bolts, tarp, poles, rope and stakes. It worked out nicely.
This park has a very large and nice pool, a camp store with cafe and many hiking trails. There is good canoeing and fishing in the Hillsborough river but watch out for the gators.

Four hours canoeing in the Hillsborough river from Lettuce lake park to Fowler and back. Biswamber Pal, Nalinikanta Pattanaik and myself rented a canoe from Lettuce Lake Park Hillsborough. We did stop many places for taking pictures. The river way was very nice with homes, different kinds of birds and animals. Nalini had done a tremendous job in keeping the canoe in proper direction and navigating the canoe. He has pedalled all 4 hours for which he became sick the next day. Bp has taken excellent pictures which is not in this video :) The exeprience and the trip we went will last as long as we watch this video and for ever. It was a great team work. Love it.

One of Florida's first state parks, Hillsborough River State Park is a great place to take a peaceful walk or canoe the Class II rapids. A concession shop offers breakfast, lunch and camping and picnic supplies, and rangers lead tours of the Fort Foster State Historic Site a few times a week ($2 a person). -

Consisting of 3,950 acres along the Hillsborough River in northwest Hillsborough County, in proximity to the Tampa Bay area makes it a popular destination for those wanting to get back to what Florida used to be. The park's seven miles of nature trails wander through hammocks of live oak, hickory, magnolia, and sabal palm trees.
The Hillsborough River is a great choice for canoeing and kayaking, and the section of the river inside the park includes several clusters of class II rapids, one of the few rivers in Florida with rapids. Canoe, kayak, and bike rentals are available from the park consessions. The park offers both full facility and primitive camping, with reservations recommended.
The park is also home to a replica of Fort Foster, which was a fort built during the Second Seminole Indian War. Ranger guided tours are offered on the weekends and many artifacts from Florida's pioneer history are on display.
