0001 Yoga Vasistha Intro Part 1 of 2
A reading of the Yoga Vasishta with some comments.
Religion v Spirituality. Religion is about belief and faith. Spirituality is about Reality. Sometimes spirituality is considered an escape from reality. Is materialism realistic? Materialism ignores our emotional side. Our emotions are real.
Spirituality is about exploring reality. The physicists explore reality and bring us back a reality which is abstracted from our personal experience.
It is a spiritual attitude that enquires after what is real. Perhaps the Indian religions are more focussed on this than the Middle Eastern religions. The Indian religions have strands which are more concerned with reality than belief.
The yogas of body, emotions and mind.
The Yoga Vasistha The Supreme Yoga, the turning of the mind to reality, as it is, rather than how we might like to believe it is, through stories.
Stories, like music, can change our perception.
The parables of Jesus, for example relating to the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Yoga Vasistha is of the greatest help to direct spiritual awakening.

Yoga Vasistha by Rishi Nityapragya: Part-1 "दुःख निवृत्ति के उपाय "
Rishi Nityapragya talks about excerpts from the ancient book Yoga Vasistha.
Yoga Vasistha (योग-वासिष्ठ) (also known as Vasistha's Yoga) is a Hindu spiritual discourse of the sage Vasistha to a young Prince Rama, during a period when the latter is in a dejected state. The book has been dated between the 11th and 14th century AD.The conversation in the Yoga Vasishta takes place chronologically before the Ramayana
Prince Rama returns from touring the country, and becomes utterly disillusioned after experiencing the apparent reality of the world. This worries his father, King Dasaratha, who expresses his concern to Sage Vasistha upon Rama's arrival. Sage Vasistha consoles the king by telling him that Rama's dis-passion (vairagya) is a sign that the prince is now ready for spiritual enlightenment. He says that Rama has begun understanding profound spiritual truths, which is the cause of his confusion; he needs confirmation. Sage Vasistha asks the king to summon Rama. Then, in King Dasaratha's court, the sage begins his discourse to Rama (which lasts several days). The answer to Rama's questions forms the entire scripture that is Yoga Vasistha.

The Yoga Vasistha is a must read, it is actually a very serious and in depth exploration into everything anyone who is interested in Self Realization would care to know. But in this spontaneous act, the silly hillbilly character comes to life and reads from this ancient text.

The Fabric of Reality Revealed
(Story of Lila) Cosmos
This exclusive workshop is the only workshop that Dr. Pillai has done on the Story of Queen Lila from the ancient text Vasistha's Yoga. This exclusive 2 day intimate workshop was given in May, 2008. The setting is outdoors at a private home in USA and the audience is a small, select group of students. Dr. Pillai gives a close reading and detailed explanation of a multi-incarnation story about Queen Lila, her husband King Padma and the Goddess Saraswati.
It is said that this book alone can lead to spiritual liberation. The conversation between Sage Vasistha and Prince Rama is of that between a great enlightened sage and a seeker who is about to reach completeness. This is one of those rare conversations which directly leads to Truth.
The Story of Lila reveals a nearly unfathomable reality in a format digestible to human consciousness. It explains consciousness, the creation of the world, the multiple universes within this world, our perception of world, the dissolution of the world and the liberation of the soul, which is the non-dualistic approach to the creation we are experiencing.
Reality Check Ahead: Just as the blue sky is an optical illusion, this entire world and the creation is also an illusion. When the illusion ends in the mind, the world and its miseries also end. The self is the seer of all - the self is the perceiver of all - the self is the experiencer of all. And that self is only one. There is no subject, seer and object. It is all one.
**************************
Dr. Pillai reveals these higher truths in a comprehensible, relaxed manner - by sharing a story with us and explaining the true reality - the big picture - the actual fluid reality that exists in spite of our perceptions of a (seemingly) fixed reality.
As Dr. Pillai explains: "You are not stuck." This is a literal truth.

0022 Section 2, Chapter 1 Yoga Vasistha
The beginning of Section Two, on the Behaviour of the Seeker. Would Rama's condition of despondency be regarded nowadays as depression or a valid response to the nature of the world?
We can tell the nature of our condition over time. Do we give up? Get lost in some addiction? Or is there a lesson to be learnt by which we can move on accordingly?
Rama's condition needs confirmation, corroboration. We are told the story of Suka, the son of Vedavyasa, a sage present in the court. Suka had arrived at the same state of dispassion. His father Vedavyasa could not direct him to wisdom so he is sent to the sage Janaka. Suka's dispassion is tested by tempting him with earthly delights.
Suka wants to know how everything came into being and how it will come to an end. "This diversity arises on account of mental modifications and it will cease when they cease." Suka knew this already but this time the force of it strikes home. He rests in nirvikalpa samadhi.
It seems that the difference between knowing something and realising something is being emphasised here.

0003 Section 1, Chapter 1 Yoga Vasistha
The Yoga Vasistha is a story within a story within a story. The sage Sutiksna asks the sage Agastya which is more conducive to liberation, work or knowledge. These refer to two different yogas.
Agastya narrates a legend concerning Karunya, and Agnivesya, his father. Karunya had mastered the scriptures and abandoned action (work). On the other hand, he still felt that he should follow scriptural injunctions.
Should one sit in meditation or get on with one's daily duties? We often see our spiritual practice to be in conflict with the demands of daily life.
Agnivesya narrates a legend. A celestial nymph called Suruci sees a messenger of Indra, the ruler of Heaven, flying past. The messenger tells of King Aristanemi, who having entrusted his kingdom to his son, was engaged in breathtaking austerities. Indra's messenger was instructed to invite Aristanemi to join the heavenly ranks. However, the royal sage refused the invitation. The messenger was then instructed to introduce the sage to Valmiki before turning down the invitation.
The sage was interested in liberation. He wanted to escape the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.
Valmiki relates the dialogue between Rama and Vasistha. Vasistha is Rama's guru.

0119 What is real? 1/2 (Yoga Vasistha Interlude)
Astral projection and credibility. Astral projection and 'reality'. Whether astral projection is an objective phenomenon or not should be easily verifiable. It isn't currently regarded as a scientific phenomenon.
In other words it is not possible to leave the body and travel in this consensual reality that we all relate to.
However, there is no reason to doubt that it is a real experience. It's the interpretation that is questionable.
Reality is actually highly abstract. For example, the subject of computing science. Highly practical but also highly abstract. Similarly with physics, the study of the natural world.
Are dreams real? Is reality determined by materiality? Dreams certainly have emotional reality.
Is something real if it is only experienced through the senses?
But what about the emotions?
We like to consider ourselves as rational beings but we are driven by our emotions. What happens to our rationality and our realism when we're caught up in a movie?
Is the movie on the DVD? A DVD consists of a disc of plastic with lots of holes on it.
The abstract has become more real -- for example digitising photos preserves them. Somehow that has become more permanent, more real even, than having them printed out on photographic paper.

0059 Section 3, Chapter 7 Yoga Vasistha
Rama asks where the supreme lord dwells and how can he be reached. The supreme lord is the indwelling intelligence. He is the Universe.
We should get away from the outmoded notion that we live in a cold mechanical universe. There is no basis for this notion. It is perhaps still a hangover from the times of Sir Isaac Newton.
Acknowledge that there is intelligence going on all around and within. It gave rise to our intelligence and it is still way beyond our own intelligence.
This needs to be realised. Everything is sentient. The notion of jiva is introduced. It is usually understood as soul but it is those psychological tendencies which give rise to a sense of separateness. Or simply the psyche.
The sentient creates the knowable and the attention identifies with what is knowable. We are then lost. The attention is directed away from itself. When the attention is turned towards itself to the unknowable, there lies fulfilment.

0002 Yoga Vasistha Intro Part 2 of 2
The essence of the teaching of the Yoga Vasistha. Do not dwell on the confusion of the world-appearance. The blueness of the sky as an optical illusion. Do rainbows exist? They depend on the angle of perception. Is the reality of the world not a matter of perception?
Do not be taken in by the world-appearance.
This teaching is revolutionary.
Kakataliya The crow alighting on the palm branch as a coconut falls. Causation is inferred even though there is no causal relationship. Such is creation.
Direct observation of the mind. Observe what is observing.
Magic Eye stereograms are a good illustration of how the mind creates depth. Is the stereogram a two-dimensional or a three-dimensional image?
Reality is not something fixed. It is an interpretation that is going on within us from moment to moment.

0835 Section 6.2, Chapter 94(continued) Yoga Vasistha
Vasistha is roaming in the world of the Siddhas. Rama asks Vasistha about the nature of his body since his physical body had been destroyed. He wants to know how real Vasistha's experience was. Was it simply Vasistha's imagination in which case it wasn't real?
We have a strong survival mechanism for deciding what is real and unreal but this has to be overriden when pursuing self-inquiry.
Of course, this isn't Vasistha's imagination. It's ours! Vasistha's reality is imaginary.
Vasistha had a 'spatial' body when he was in the city of Indra.
Sankalpa, a notion with momentum.
Vasistha was invisible to those around him.
Astral body.
The reality of astral experience. William Buhlman, Oliver Fox, Robert Munroe.
Dream experience.
Imagination does not mean 'false'.
Move between the consensual conventional reality and the reality of the imagination.
Rama wonders how the sage in outer space saw Vasistha. It was by Vasistha's wish.
The ativahika body, the body of our fundamental tendencies, being able to experience your imagination first-hand.
The phenomenon of dreaming has huge implications for our understanding of reality.
The division of real and unreal needs to be weakened. Psychic transparency.
