Operation Ivy (1952)
Courtesy National Nuclear Security Administration / Nevada Site Office 0800012 - Operation Ivy, Parts 1 and 2 - 1952 - 1:02:30 - Pacific, Color, Sanitized - "The island of Elugelab is missing!" President Eisenhower heard this short report on the Mike shot in Operation Ivy from Gordon Dean, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Mike was the first full-fledged hydrogen bomb to be tested. The island where the device was detonated was vaporized. The hole Mike left was big enough to accommodate several pentagon-size buildings and deep enough to hold the Empire State Building. Mike's yield was an incredible 10.4 megatons, signaling the expansion of the nuclear arsenal from fission to fusion, the same process that occurs in the Sun. The detonation of the Mike device was the climax of an intense debate over what would be the nation's correct response to the startling news in 1949 that the Soviet Union had detonated a nuclear weapon. Many wanted the US to develop the means to produce and field a large number of fission bombs of varying yields which could be used for tactical purposes. Others believed that the country should institute a crash program like the Manhattan Project to develop a Super weapon based on the idea of forcing together or fusing light atoms with a fissile device to produce enormous amounts of energy. After a bitter fight among scientific, government and military officials, the President opted for a crash program to demonstrate the Super bomb, now called a ...

Rosemary Clooney - Tenderly - 1952
"Tenderly" is a Pop standard published in 1946 with music by Walter Lloyd Gross (1909-1967) and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. "Tenderly" has been recorded by many famous artists, but possibly the best-known version is by Rosemary Clooney. Her recorded version reached only #17 on the Billboard magazine pop charts in early 1952, but is more popular than the chart data would suggest, as is evidenced by the fact that Tenderly served as the theme song for Clooney's 1956-1957 TV variety show. It also became her signature song. I consciously came to know of the song in the late 1970's while watching a Bing Crosby Special; Rosemary, a guest star on the show, sang it and it just took my breath away; I immediately realized that I had heard the song before, and it brought vivid memories of my childhood and my mother. It is because of this that I made this video - A way to pay tribute to this great artist, song and to the beautiful memory of my late mother. It is to her that I dedicate this song and I know she watches from a better place.

A Is For Atom (1952)
Although the "Atoms for Peace" campaign was formally launched in 1957, corporate America began to promote peaceful uses of atomic energy as early as the first few months after Hiroshima. A Is For Atom, an artifact of this effort, takes this highly loaded and threatening issue straight to the public in an attempt to "humanize" the figure of the atom. A Is For Atom speaks of five atomic "giants" which "man has released from within the atom's heart": the warrior and destroyer, the farmer, the healer, the engineer and the research worker. Each is pictured as a majestic, shimmering outline figure towering over the earth. "But all are within man's power Ñ subject to his command," says the narrator reassuringly, and our future depends "on man's wisdom, on his firmness in the use of that power." General Electric, a long-time manufacturer of electric appliances, power generation plants, and nuclear weapon components, is staking a claim here, asserting their interest in managing and exploiting this new and bewildering technology. Its pitch: this is powerful, frightening, near-apocalyptic technology, but managed with firmness, it can be profitable and promising. This "Trust us with the control of technology, and we'll give you progress without end" pitch resembles what we've seen in films like General Motors' To New Horizons (on the Ephemeral Films disc). But the automobile, of course, wasn't a weapon of mass destruction. In its first two years of release, A Is For Atom was seen by ...
