Begich Questions the USPS on the Skagway Post Office
Allowing more flexible hiring rules to fill vacant positions at the Skagway Post Office was the subject of testimony yesterday at the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. US Sen. Mark Begich, a member of the committee, questioned two nominees to the Board of Governors of the US Postal Service (USPS) about the need to customize hiring practices based on the needs of local communities like Skagway. There are currently three vacancies in the Skagway post office, which has resulted in a backlog of mail.

Begich on Transportation Bill: "Let's quit the politics and move forward"
US Sen. Mark Begich spoke on the Senate floor today about his frustration with the House of Representatives for not moving forward on the reauthorization of the nation's surface transportation programs. A comprehensive reauthorization bill passed the Senate in mid-March with a bi-partisan vote of 74 to 22 . The bill means over a billion for Alaska transportation projects over the next two years, but is stalled in negotiations with the House in conference committee.

Geography Matters: Begich Presses USAF Chief of Staff Nominee on Alaska Military Importance
July 19, 2012 - US Sen. Mark Begich again pressed top brass in the US Air Force on the important role Alaska plays in the nation's defense, and received affirmative comments from the incoming Air Force Chief of Staff. Begich, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), took part in the nomination hearing at SASC of General. Mark Welsh to be Chief of Staff, and Lt. Gen. Frank Grass to be general and Chief, National Guard Bureau. "Alaska is a very valuable platform for the US Air Force," Gen. Welsh said at the hearing in response to questioning from Begich. "There's a reason we have our newest fighter based in Alaska. There's a reason we have a tanker airlift stationed in Alaska—a tremendous tanker unit by the way. There's a reason we have tactical airlift rescue forces, command and control aircraft, geography matters."

Social Security Town Hall with Sen. Mark Begich
On the day the Social Security Trustees Report was released, Sen. Mark Begich and Strengthen Social Security Campaign Co-Chair Eric Kingson held a telephone town hall with supporters, and Sen. Begich took questions from people who were interested in the program's future. Eric Kingson's Statement for Senator Begich's 4/23/12 teleconference I'm Eric Kingson, co-chair of Strengthen Social Security Campaign, a coalition of 320 organizations across our country, including most of the nation's major unions, women's, disability, aging and civil rights organizations. On behalf of our coalition, I would like to thank Senator Mark Begich for his commitment to keeping the promise of Social Security, for today's seniors and generations to come. He understands that our Social Security system is a public trust --- built and sustained by the hard work and wisdom of the American people. Social Security is and remains America's most important source of life, disability and retirement protections. Its benefits are modest and must not be cut, either for today's or tomorrow's beneficiaries Despite the likely reporting that the "sky is falling," the Trustees Report is good news. The report shows that, as Seator Begich just said, our Social Security system works just as intended, even in difficult economic times. It identifies a manageable shortfall, decades away. It shows that our Social Security system has a large and growing surplus. More the $50 billion dollars ($57 b) will be added to the ...

Begich Lands in Helicopter on the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf
US Senators Mark Begich (D-AK) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) joined Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and US Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Robert Papp, for a tour in Cold Bay today of the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf. The Bertholf is part of the Coast Guard's Arctic Shield operation which will be in full operation as Shell moves toward drilling in the Arctic this summer. Commissioned in 2008, the Bertholf is the first of the Coast Guard's Legend-class National Security Cutters and is participating in Arctic Shield which requires at least one flight deck-equipped cutter to be present in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas at all times to respond to oil spill clean-up and participate in search and rescue. Arctic Shield is the Coast Guard's 2012 summer operation plan for Alaska when it will dramatically increase its presence in the Arctic as Shell Oil Co. prepares to drill wells in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

Begich Welcomes Home Members of the 4/25 from Afghanistan
US Senator Mark Begich today issued the following statement welcoming home to Alaska members of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. The 4/25 has been deployed in Eastern Afghanistan for a 10-month combat tour and is returning to Alaska in waves throughout September and October. "The members of the 4/25 have carried out their mission with honor and dignity, and their service is a credit to all Alaskans," said Begich. "To the unit and the families of those 4/25 members that were lost on this deployment I extend our deepest sympathy and our commitment to never forget what they have sacrificed." "We must remember to recognize the family members who stood by these soldiers and made their service possible. I join with families statewide in looking forward to the return of all of Alaska's military personnel deployed in Afghanistan as the drawdown of US military operations in Afghanistan continues. Thank you, Spartans!"
