Menachem Elimelech, Membrane-Based Processes at the Water-Energy Nexus
Menachem Elimelech, Membrane-Based Processes at the Water-Energy Nexus
Professor Menachem Elimelech, of Yale University, presents "Membrane-Based Processes at the Water-Energy Nexus" on December 9, 2013 as part of the Andlinger Center's 2013-2014 Highlight Seminar Series. ABSTRACT Membrane-based processes play a critical role in technologies for desalination and water purification, as well as emerging technologies for sustainable power generation from natural salinity gradients and waste heat. This presentation will discuss three membrane processes based on "engineered osmosis" which play an important role at the water-energy nexus. One of these technologies is reverse osmosis, which is being used extensively worldwide for seawater desalination. The energy efficiency, the state of the technology, and the environmental challenges of seawater desalination will be critically reviewed. Another emerging process for water purification is forward osmosis. This process is driven by the natural flow of water through a semipermeable membrane based on osmotic pressure gradient, rather than through the application of hydraulic pressure. Several applications of forward osmosis that enhance sustainability at the water-energy nexus will be discussed. Lastly, pressure retarded osmosis, a sustainable emerging technology for capturing salinity gradient energy from saline waters, will be discussed. In addition to capturing energy from natural salinity gradients, pressure retarded osmosis combined with membrane distillation can produce energy from low-grade or waste heat through the generation of artificially created salinity gradients using synthetic solutions. BIOGRAPHY Menachem Elimelech is the Roberto Goizueta Professor at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University. Professor Elimelech received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Hebrew University in Israel and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1989 in Environmental Engineering. His research interests include (i) engineered osmosis for sustainable production of water and power, (ii) environmental applications of nanomaterials, (iii) membrane separations for desalination and water reuse, and (iv) water and sanitation in developing countries. Professor Elimelech was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2006 and was awarded the Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize in 2005. Professor Elimelech has advised 30 Ph.D. students and 22 postdoctoral researchers, many of whom hold leading positions in academia and industry. In recognition of his excellence and dedication in teaching and mentoring, he received the W.M. Keck Foundation Engineering Teaching Excellence Award in 1994, the Yale University Graduate Mentor Award in 2004, and the Yale University Postdoctoral Mentoring Prize in 2012.- published: 11 Dec 2013

Jerald Schnoor, Water Implications of Biofuels in the U.S.
Professor Jerald Schnoor, of the University of Iowa, presents "Water Implications of Biofuels in the U.S." on September 16, 2013 as part of the Andlinger Center's 2013-2014 Highlight Seminar Series. ABSTRACT The U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 provides a goal of 36 billion gallons of biofuels by 2022. Currently we produce about 14 billion gallons each year, mostly from corn for ethanol production, which consumes 40% of the corn crop in the U.S. The impetus of the national goal is a desire for greater energy security and lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation fuels. But there are serious environmental, social, and water implications from producing that much biofuel, particularly from corn and soybeans, which are scheduled to peak at about 15 billion gallons in 2015. Cellulosic biofuels (from corn stover, switchgrass, wood residues, willow and poplar) offer the promise of lower water impacts and are mandated to provide a large fraction of the remaining Renewable Fuel Standard RFS2 of 16 billion gallons by 2022. But they are slow to become commercial. Impacts on water quantity and quality of the RFS2 mandate are the subject of this talk, and alternative options will be discussed. BIOGRAPHY Dr. Jerald L. Schnoor, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, Allen S. Henry Chair in Engineering; Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering; Professor, Occupational and Environmental Health; and Co-Director, Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research; The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. Jerald Schnoor is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (elected in 1999) for his pioneering work using mathematical models in science policy decisions. He testified several times before Congress on various environmental issues including the environmental effects of acid deposition and the importance of passing the 1990 Clean Air Act. While serving as Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Science and Technology, Jerry guides the leading journal in both environmental engineering and environmental science. His editorial writings on environmental policy and research have been widely accessed by the international community. Professor Schnoor has published (as author, co-author, or editor) six books and over 175 research articles in archival journals. Dr. Schnoor chaired the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development from 2000-2004. Recently, he served as Chair of the NRC Committee on Science for Environmental Protection in the 21st Century. He was also the Chair of the 2008 National Research Council report on The Water Implications of Biofuels Processing in the U.S. Dr. Schnoor and his students have pioneered phytoremediation, the use of plants to help clean the environment. The research involves discovering novel pathways for the uptake, storage, and metabolism of toxic organic chemicals at waste sites. Dr. Schnoor has been instrumental in the full-scale clean-up and demonstration of phytoremediation systems to remediate petrochemical contaminations, explosives contaminant remediation from groundwater using created wetlands, and the interception and treatment of groundwater plumes containing industrial chemicals. Schnoor's publications cover a wide range of topics including water quality modeling, water sustainability, phytoremediation, and mitigation of greenhouse gases in climate change. Jerry won the 2010 Clarke Prize from the National Water Research Institute for his work on water sustainability. Natural gas is a hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, but commonly includes varying amounts of other higher alkanes and even a lesser percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen sulfide. Natural gas is an energy source often used for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. It is also used as fuel for vehicles and as a chemical feedstock in the manufacture of plastics and other commercially important organic chemicals. Natural gas is found in deep underground rock formations or associated with other hydrocarbon reservoirs in coal beds and as methane clathrates. Petroleum is also another resource found in proximity to and with natural gas. Most natural gas was created over time by two mechanisms: biogenic and thermogenic. Biogenic gas is created by methanogenic organisms in marshes, bogs, landfills, and shallow sediments. Deeper in the earth, at greater temperature and pressure, thermogenic gas is created from buried organic material. Before natural gas can be used as a fuel, it must undergo processing to remove impurities, including water, to meet the specifications of marketable natural gas. The by-products of processing include ethane, propane, butanes, pentanes, and higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide (which may be converted into pure sulfur), carbon dioxide, water vapor, and sometimes helium and nitrogen. Natural gas is often informally referred to simply as gas, especially when compared to other energy sources such as oil or coal. However, it is not to be confused with gasoline, especially in North America, where the term gasoline is often shortened in colloquial usage to gas. Natural gas was used by the Chinese in about 500 B.C. They discovered the potential to transport gas seeping from the ground in crude pipelines of bamboo to where it was used to boil sea water. In the 19th century, natural gas was usually obtained as a by-product of producing oil, since the small, light gas carbon chains came out of solution as the extracted fluids underwent pressure reduction from the reservoir to the surface, similar to uncapping a bottle of soda where the carbon dioxide effervesces. Unwanted natural gas was a disposal problem in the active oil fields. If there was not a market for natural gas near the wellhead it was virtually valueless since it had to be piped to the end user. In the 19th century and early 20th century, such unwanted gas was usually burned off at oil fields. Today, unwanted gas (or stranded gas without a market) associated with oil extraction often is returned to the reservoir with 'injection' wells while awaiting a possible future market or to repressurize the formation, which can enhance extraction rates from other wells. In regions with a high natural gas demand (such as the US), pipelines are constructed when it is economically feasible to transport gas from a wellsite to an end consumer. Another possibility is to export natural gas as a liquid. Gas-to-liquids (GTL) is a developing technology that converts stranded natural gas into synthetic gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel through the Fischer-Tropsch process developed in Germany prior to World War II. Such fuel can be transported to users through conventional pipelines and tankers. Proponents claim that GTL burns cleaner than comparable petroleum fuels. Major international oil companies use sophisticated technology to produce GTL. A world-scale (140,000 barrels (22,000 m3) a day) GTL plant in Qatar went into production in 2011. Natural gas can be "associated" (found in oil fields), or "non-associated" (isolated in natural gas fields), and is also found in coal beds (as coalbed methane). It sometimes contains a significant amount of ethane, propane, butane, and pentane—heavier hydrocarbons removed for commercial use prior to the methane being sold as a consumer fuel or chemical plant feedstock. Non-hydrocarbons such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium (rarely), and hydrogen sulfide must also be removed before the natural gas can be transported.- published: 11 Nov 2013
