  • Saudi embassy linked with terrorist funding in Ethiopia

    The wife of a senior Ethiopian politician was on Monday charged with funnelling money from the Embassy of Saudi Arabia to Islamist terror groups. Those arrested were accused of belonging to, or supporting, the “Solution Seekers of the Muslim Community’s Problems”, a group that the prosecution contended is a terrorist organisation.

    The responsibilities of the 4,000-member force, known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, include enforcing strict gender separation in public places, and ensuring shops and businesses are closed during prayer times. Members are known for harassing women on the streets and in malls for conduct or dress they consider a violation of Saudi Arabia’s strict interpretation of Islamic law. Such incidents have become more prominent as some women take videos of their encounters and post them on YouTube.
    Individual members of the religious police will be held accountable for their actions when they violate the new guidelines.

    "The president has to support the application of God’s rule — Egypt is an Islamic state". Workers also came under fire at Alexandria’s Ramla Square, where the Muslim Brotherhood’s Sobhi Saleh dubbed those taking part in strikes "enemies of the people."

  • Muslim survivors of Myanmar’s sectarian violence relive ordeals

    Muslim survivors of six days of sectarian violence in western Myanmar spoke yesterday of fleeing bullets and burning homes to escape on fishing boats after an attack by once-peaceable Rakhine neighbors.
    Barefoot Muslim men and women alighted from engine-less fishing boats and climbed the muddy embankment to Te Chaung camp carrying children and what meager possessions they had salvaged from the inferno. Myanmar’s Buddhist-majority government regards the estimated 800,000 Rohingyas in the country as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship.

  • France: Muslims treat Paris to pastry protest on Eid

    In an amusing response to a conservative French politician’s incendiary comment that thugs snatched children’s pastries during the holy month of Ramadan, a French Muslim rights group distributed chocolate croissants outside the Paris Grande Mosque on Friday, the start of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha. The chocolate croissant stunt was “an overall victory against the racism and stigmatisation [of Muslims].”
