Earlier in the day, he and the First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton paid their respects at the Grand Mosque of Dakar.
President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary were greeted on Goree Island by children waving flags and cheering.
Clinton spoke straight after a tour of a former slave house on Goree.
There he had walked down the passage from which countless numbers of Africans were forced into ships to sail to the Americas earlier this century.
He made reference both to the historic and present day relationship of Africa and the U-S.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Long after the slave ships stopped sailing from this place to America, Goree Island still today looks out onto the new world, connecting two continents, standing as a vivid reminder that for some of America's ancestors, the journey to American was anything but a search for freedom."
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, United States President
Clinton said Africa still faced poverty, malnutrition, disease, illiteracy, unemployment and terrible conflicts.
But - on a more positive note - he also said that democracy was gaining strength, business was growing and peace was making progress.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Hours from now we will leave Africa and go on home back to the work of building our own country for a new century but I return more convinced than when I came here that despite the daunting challenges there is an African renaissance."
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, United States President
Touching on a central theme of his African tour, Clinton said his administration was committed to building closer relations with the continent, in trade, security and in other ways.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"If we face the future together it will be a future that is better for Africa and better for America. so we leave Goree Island today, mindful of the large job still to be done, proud of how far we have come, proud of how far Africa has come, determined to succeed in building a bright common destiny."
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, United States President
Earlier in the day President Bill Clinton met with African human rights activists and also toured the Grand Mosque of Dakar, an imposing green-and-white tile building.
In line with Muslim custom, the First Lady wore a scarf over her head and all members of
the presidential party - including Secret Service agents - removed their shoes for the tour.
Late in the evening, the Clintons boarded the plane back to the U-S.
They had been accompanied to the airport by President Abdou Diouf for his departure.
Clinton said he was happy to returning home, and ready to work on the business of the nation.
During his 12-day visit to the continent, he toured six nations.
As well as Senegal, he visited Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa and Botswana.

STORYLINE
Catholics across the globe continued to react to the appointment of the Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope to lead their church.
As they did, one of the cardinals who participated in the conclave that chose the new pope said that it became clear in the week leading up to the vote that Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was the right man for the job.
On the streets of Buenos Aires, there was great excitement and pride over his appointment.
" I believe that as Latin Americans this brings us a lot of hope that more attention will be paid to us," said Bolivian Catholic Ingrid Guerra.
"Thanks be to God that at last we have an Argentine pope," said another woman, Ilda Olmos.
In Senegal, as Catholic faithful attended a mass at Dakar's Cathdrale Notre Dame des Victoires, Alexis Vincent Gomez said he hoped Pope Francis would "bring humanity to the church".
The son of middle-class Italian immigrants, Bergoglio came close to becoming pope during the last conclave in 2005.

Hi everyone!
From enjoying delicious meals to chatting about fashion, on the top of my busy mission for work, my trip to Dakar, Senegal in last April was truly a trip of a lifetime. I found some slot here and there to spend quality time with friends, family and colleagues. This is a sneak peek of Dakar, the City of Beauty of West Africa, and my home for about 8 years.
Here bellow are the links to the blog post I made about Dakar. I will introduce you to the singer Kya Loum very soon.
Enjoy.

Cities of the World:
Havana, Nairobi and Dakar
Havana, is the capital city, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city is one of the 14 Cuban provinces. The city/province has 2.1 million inhabitants, and the urban area over 2.6 million, making Havana the largest city in both Cuba and the Caribbean region.[4] The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa, and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The city and its surrounding area also forms the Nairobi Province. The name "Nairobi" comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, which translates to "the place of cool waters". However, it is popularly known as the "Green City in the Sun."
Dakar is the capital city of Senegal, located on the Cape Verde Peninsula, on the country's Atlantic coast. It is Senegal's largest city. Its position, on the western edge of Africa (it is the westernmost African city), is an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade; this fact aided its growth into a major regional port.

Travel video about destination Casablanca in Morocco.
Casablanca, a city of many faces, Oriental yet modern. From being a former Berber settlement to today's commercial metropolis, around 80 percent of Moroccan industry is concentrated in Casablanca, the country's financial, technological and commercial centre and also Africa's largest seaport.
Jutting into the sea is the Hassan II Mosque. 'It was He who created Heaven and Earth in six days!', this paragraph from the Koran inspired Hassan II to build his momentous mosque that extends for nine hectares, a superlative construction that could comfortably accommodate the entire Petersdom in Rome.
Casablanca is a large city surrounded by many ancient villages where life has changed little since ancient times.
The Stade Mohammed V is the centre of Casablanca and is located between the old Medina and the new town with its large residential districts. Several administrative buildings, mosques and Art Deco buildings are situated in the vicinity of the Stade Mohammed and there's also a pedestrian-only shopping mall. The head offices of numerous banks, insurance and commercial companies are located within the modern and flamboyant city centre with its imposing skyscrapers.
The souks contain a labyrinth of alleys and each usually has its own specialty. The souks are the perfect place for those who wish to experience typical Morocco as the aromas and sounds of their narrow alleys are far more descriptive than any travel guide.
Casablanca captivates all those who experience it. This former coastal city of seafarers and pirates is today both lively and contemporary with all the atmosphere and flair of a bygone time.

Travel video about destination East Africa.
East Africa is one of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the world and its magnificent wilderness and fascinating wildlife is one of the few remaining unspoiled regions on earth. Lake Naivasha is the ideal habitat for both the rare Fish Eagle and African Eagle, thus it is a perfect location from which to observe these fascinating birds. Due to its rich variety of wildlife and the spectacular beauty of its landscape Kenya is one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations. The Massai Mara National Park is located around six hours from Nairobi and is one of the country’s most extraordinary game reserves. Its name indicates the presence of one of Africa’s most colourful tribes, the Massai. The Amboseli National Park also contains many of East Africa’s most important landscapes and represents the magnificence of the African flora and fauna that grows in this relatively small, protected area. The local wildlife stays at a safe distance from the geysers of Lake Bogoria as the steaming hot springs can prove fatal for the flamingos and other water birds that live there. Nevertheless, quite often the bones of dead animals can be seen close to the geysers as some venture too close and are killed by the hot steam. At an altitude of nearly six thousand metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the African continent. For most of the time its summit is covered by a dense ring of cloud that gives the mountain an air of mystique. There are few other places on earth that offer the huge variety of nature as does the legendary east of the African continent. A magical destination and a wild natural paradise that is second to none!

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt.
Cairo is a cultural melting pot and with a population of sixteen million it is the largest metropolis on the African continent. The Egyptian people refer to their capital city as Um Al Dunya, ‘Mother of the World’. The history of the Sankt Sergius Church dates back to Abu Serga in the 5th century A.D. Legend has it that it was built on the site where the Holy Family once sought refuge. Thus, the richly decorated church is a popular Christian place of pilgrimage and is situated in Fustat in the middle of Koptic, the oldest district in Cairo. The spacious Mamelucks Necropolis is unique within the Islamic world. Here, instead of conventional graves, entire houses were built for the dead. Within the necropolis the mosques and mausoleums of the Mameluck sovereigns are particularly interesting. Built in 1900, each day the Egypt Museum attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience for themselves the legendary treasures of ancient history that comprise more than 120,000 different objects from 4500 years of Egyptian history, including the unique Tut-Ench-Amun exhibition. Cairo really does strive to do justice to its name, Mother of the World. After all, it was this city that united the glory of the Pharaos with the Early Christian and Islamic worlds..
