Wikimania 2012: Sister Projects II
Originally on Friday July 13, 2012 at George Washington University for Wikimania 2012. The first talk is "The hundred-year old websites" submitted by Amir E. Aharoni. This talk presents several projects which will show that it is much more than that: Encyclopedia Britannica 1911 -- You may have heard that it's outdated and racist, but in some ways it is better than Wikipedia and even better than the modern online version of Britannica; Malayalam Wikisource projects in Kerala schools -- How usage of Wikisource changes the way literature is taught; Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar -- How a book published in the 19th century with so many cross-references that it should have been a website, is finally realizing its potential and starts a new life, helping students and professors all over the world. This talk also shows how recent improvements in MediaWiki's internationalization technologies, such as WebFonts, are taking Wikisource even further in making knowledge and cultural assets accessible in ways hardly imaginable in the past. 19:21 the second talk, "Let's talk about Wikidata and what it means for you!" submitted by Lydia Pintscher. The panel includes Denny Vrandečić, Daniel Kinzler, Pavel Richter, and Erik Möller. The panel introduces Wikidata to the Wikimedia community, shows what it is intended to do, provides a conversation channel between the initial development team and the wider community, and outlines opportunities for involvement.

Wikimania 2012: Sister Projects III: Mapping
Originally on Friday July 13, 2012 at George Washington University for Wikimania 2012. The first talk is "Mapping by the Margins. New Cultures of Contribution" submitted by Mikel Maron. This talk examines challenges and the economic, political and educational realities, through the speaker's work on the Map Kibera project (mapkibera.org slum mapping in Dar es Salaam, grassroots media projects in East Jerusalem, and elsewhere. The speaker and his collaborators don't have the definitive answers to questions of motivation and sustainability, of change through technology, but have taken an experimental, learning, co-creation approach to finding the unique answer in every situation. 30:25 the second talk, "Cooperation with OpenStreetMap" submitted by Kolossos, starts. The presentation briefly shows the work of en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates and present the results of this data extraction. 54:20 the third talk, "The technology of WikiMiniAtlas" submitted by Daniel Schwen, begins. This presentation throws light on the various client-side and server-side parts that work together to make up this complex application, such as Custom server software for on-demand map-tile rendering, on-demand processing of LANDSAT satellite data, and automatic article summary generation.

Wikimedia's infrastructure is designed to make it possible for millions of humans worldwide to freely reuse its contents, but it falls short of providing tools to allow third-party services to easily reuse its data. The goal of this presentation is to start a discussion on what it takes to rethink Wikipedia as a platform (WAAP) to facilitate the reuse of its contents in the form of structured data. In this talk we will focus on two technologies—Wikilytics and OAuth—that, combined, could spearhead the creation of an ...

Jimmy Wales Closing Ceremony at Wikimania 2008
Jimmy Wales is an Internet entrepreneur and wiki enthusiast, and founder of the Wikipedia project. Jimmy was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1966, and is a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He worked as Research Director at Chicago Options Associates, a futures and options trading firm then located in Chicago. In the mid-1990s he started Bomis, a search portal focusing on aspects of pop culture, one of the first users of the freely licensed data of the Open Directory Project. In 1999, Jimmy had the concept of a freely distributable encyclopedia and founded Nupedia, by hiring philosopher Larry Sanger as editor-in-chief and assigning two programmers to write software for it. Nupedia failed, perhaps due to being a top-down cathedral model, as opposed to Wikipedia, which is the ultimate bazaar. After two years of working with the Nupedia concept, that team opened Wikipedia to help channel content into Nupedia; Wikipedia became an instant success, but not in the envisioned way, and Nupedia was shut down. In 2003, Jimmy set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization, to support Wikipedia and its sister projects. In 2004, Jimmy founded Wikia. He was appointed a fellow of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society in mid-2005, and in October of 2005 joined the Board of Directors of Socialtext, a provider of wiki technology to businesses. He lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.watch the whole symposium on webcast.bibalex.org

Pdf Conference 2010: Justmeans Interviews Jimmy Wales (Founder Wikipedia)
Jimmy Wales is an American Internet entrepreneur best known as the founder of Wikimedia Foundation, the charity which operates Wikipedia.org, and as the co-founder of Wikia.com. Wales received his Bachelor's degree in finance from Auburn University and his Master's in finance from University of Alabama. He was appointed a fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School in 2005 and in 2006, he joined the Board of Directors of the non-profit organization Creative Commons. In January of 2001, Wales started Wikipedia.org, the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit and today Wikipedia and its sister projects are among the top-five most visited sites on the web. In mid-2003, Wales set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization based in St. Petersburg, Florida, to support Wikipedia.org. The Foundation, now based in downtown San Francisco, boasts a staff of close to thirty focusing on fundraising, technology, and programming relating to the expansion of Wikipedia. Wales now sits on the board of trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, and as founder continues to act as a key spokesperson. In 2004, Wales co-founded Wikia.com, a completely separate company that enables groups of people to share information and opinions that fall outside the scope of an encyclopedia. Wikia's community-created wikis range from video games and movies to finance and environmental issues. Wikia's network is now ranked in the top 75 of all websites according to ...

How Wikimedia is Scaling Open Source Innovation
Wikipedia and its sister projects are the fifth most accessed web sites in the world. Remarkably, both the content and the platform were developed through an open, community process. How can Wikimedia continue this process while also meeting the challenge of scale? We'll give an overview of the Wikimedia universe and identify challenges and opportunities that have emerged from the Wikimedia Foundation's year-long strategic challenge process. We'll then dive into two specific case studies. We'll describe the Wikipedia Usability Initiative's work to make its user experience process more participatory. We'll then discuss how the Wikimedia Foundation is grappling with the unique challenges of building business relationships between telecommunication companies and the open source community in the mobile space. Presenters: Tomasz Finc is Engineering Program Manager for Fundraising, Mobile, Offline, and Business Relationships at the Wikimedia Foundation. He has more than eight years of experience as a systems and software engineer. He previously worked at Amazon.com, where he administered and supported the Amazon.com A9 search engine. Tomasz speaks fluent Polish and English. Trevor Parscal is the Lead UX Software Developer at the Wikimedia Foundation. He began his career as a user interface designer in 2000. He's been an active open source contributor in the D programming language since 2004. Eugene Eric Kim is the cofounder and principal of Blue Oxen Associates, a consulting ...

Wikimania 2012: Glam VII: Science and Archives
Originally on Saturday July 14, 2012 at George Washington University as part of Wikimania 2012. The first talk is "5 Reasons Why Archives are an Untapped Goldmine for Wikimedians" submitted by Sara Snyder. This presentation introduces you to the basics of archival records and research (often a somewhat mysterious process to the uninitiated) and lays out the top 5 reasons why partnerships with archival repositories are of mutual benefit to Wikimedians and archivists alike. The speaker also shares links and sources you can use to help identify and locate archival repositories and interested archivists from around the world. This presentation is informed by the experience of Wikimedia's prior GLAM-Wiki collaboration hosting Wikipedian in Residence Sarah Stierch at the Archives of American Art during the Summer/Fall of 2011. 18:49 the second talk, "Science GLAM" submitted by Daniel Mietchen, begins. In this talk, the speaker discusses whether and how initiatives that came out of existing GLAM:Wiki projects - like QRpedia, Wikimedians in Residence and writing challenges - are applicable in a science GLAM context. Under what conditions can they fulfill the same roles in which they already serve in more traditional GLAM:Wiki environments? Can GLAM tools be used to generate interest amongst science GLAMs in exploring the possibilities of GLAM:Wiki projects? 48:10 the third session, "Wikisource and the US National Archives: a case study" submitted by National Archives Wikipedian ...

2009 Zaagkii Project Vid #9: Teens Painting Mason Bee Houses in Northern Michigan
(Marquette, MI) - During the summer of 2009, northern Michigan teens painted their mason bee houses with help from children's book illustrator Diana Magnuson of Marquette and artist Sherri Bohjanen-Hutter, a Marquette native from Anchorage, Alaska. A few days earlier, former shop teacher Bruce Ventura of Marquette helped the students build the mason bee houses. The mason bee houses were created during July 2009 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Marquette. Working alongside members of several Ojibwa tribes, at-risk teens with the US Forest Service-sponsored Zaagkii Wings and Seeds Project in Michigan's Upper Peninsula will continue protecting pollinators during 2010 by helping to build the first-ever native species plants greenhouse on an American Indian reservation and hope to trace the Mexico Monarch migration. The Marquette teens planted/distributed over 26000 native plants seeds, helped transplant hundreds of native plant seedlings, hiked through remote forests with Zaagkii Project Native American college interns to learn importance and uses for native species plants, and have built and painted 36 mason bee houses and 18 butterfly houses with one of each placed by the USFS in The Peoples Garden at US Department of Agriculture Headquarters, Washington, DC. Zaagkii Project sponsors: Nonprofit Cedar Tree Institute, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC), the United States Forest Service (USFS) and Marquette County Juvenile Court. The State of Wikipedia by JESS3
Created by JESS3: The State of Wikipedia not only explores the rich history and inner-workings of the web-based encyclopedia, but it's also a celebration of its 10th anniversary. With more than 17 million articles in over 270 languages, Wikipedia has undoubtedly become one of the most visited and relied upon sites on the web today. The fourth video in our the "State of" series, JESS3 is proud to release The State of Wikipedia as our first video of 2011. And, as if it weren't good enough, the video features none other than one of the co-founders himself, Jimmy Wales, as the narrator. jess3.com

Wikimania 2012: GLAM IV: National GLAM Coordinator
Originally on Friday July 13, 2012 at George Washington University for Wikimania 2012. The talk is "A National GLAM Coordinator-a crucial yet overlooked role" submitted by Shani Evenstine. The panel members include Lori Byrd Phillips, Shani Evenstine, Noopur Raval, Ashley Van Haeften, Liam Wyatt, Adrienne Alix, Barbara Fischer, and Axel Pettersson. Some of the reasons why this role is needed and that are discussed throughout the panel are - "accumulated wisdom" that can pass from one project to the next a perspective that allows to better define new projects one recognizable contact person for GLAMs, as well as for the community. speaking to / negotiating with GLAMs with a coherent voice _before_ a Wikipedian-in-Residence is found (or when a WiR is not part of the partnership) Helps WiR, especially when paid, to keep track with WM's goals, as well as remain neutral. Having a WM contact person helps WiR focus on the work itself and leave all the technicalities (and politics) to someone else. Crucial when WiR has the wiki-know-how and is familiar with the subject, but lacks assertiveness or does not feel comfortable advancing the project, making contacts, representing the community in partnership negotiations, or communicating with the rest of the world [personality, maturity, languages, know-how of sister-wikis]. Coordinator serves as networker / connecting institutions with appropriate Wikipedians who can assist technically or in outreach. Other points that will be ...
