Karen Fraser
Karen Fraser (born September 12, 1944) is a Washington State Senator (Democrat) for the 22nd District, comprising the northern portion of Thurston County, including all of Olympia, Lacey, and most of Tumwater.
Before joining the Senate, she was a former State Representative, Thurston County Commissioner and Mayor of Lacey. She was also the past President of the Washington State Association of Counties.
As of the 2008 Legislative session, she is vice chair and Capital Budget chair of the Ways & Means Committee, and is a member of the Natural Resources, Ocean & Recreation Committee, the Rules Committee, and the Water, Energy & Telecommunications Committee.
Fraser is a candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the 2016 election.
Education
Fraser graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a Masters of Public Administration from the university's Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs. She was founder of the Legislative International Caucus

In 1968, Karen Fraser was in graduate school at the University of Washington, pursuing a master’s degree in public administration. Fraser demonstrated exceptional talent as a Ford Foundation intern with the Legislature before joining the State Highways Department as an economist. Active in the National Organization for Women, she became the first female mayor of Lacey in 1976. After eight years as a Thurston County commissioner, Fraser was elected to the Legislature. She became a champion of gender equality, the environment, and growth management, retiring in 2016 — a half-century after she arrived at the Capitol. It’s hard, of course, for all the reasons we’re afraid it might be hard – awkwardness abounds -- but there are three simple things we can do to make it easier to embrace the opportunities that come your way. It's called “becoming a spoke person.” Just as the spokes of a wheel create the circle of the rim by pulling in (instead of pushing it out, as is sometimes thought), we can learn how to pull people into conversation and relationships rather than pushing them away.
Minister and Open-Minded Talker | Rev. Karen Fraser Gitlitz is an ordained minister in the Unitarian Universalist tradition, who currently serves the Unitarian Congregation of Saskatoon, and consults with the Unitarian Fellowship of Regina. As part of the Essential Voices project, an outreach ministry of the United Church of Canada, Karen worked with a team that encouraged non-profits and governments to create paid positions for people with lived experience of poverty.Karen believes in the transformational power of community and strives to create more opportunities for people to be in open, honest dialogue with one another. The fascination with cities and communities has been sparked by classes in architectural history and through her social justice work, especially in projects combining activism and the arts.Karen and her partner moved to Saskatoon from the West Coast three years ago and are enjoying getting to know Saskatoon and prairie life.

In 1968, Karen Fraser was in graduate school at the University of Washington, pursuing a master’s degree in public administration. Fraser demonstrated exceptional talent as a Ford Foundation intern with the Legislature before joining the State Highways Department as an economist. Active in the National Organization for Women, she became the first female mayor of Lacey in 1976. After eight years as a Thurston County commissioner, Fraser was elected to the Legislature. She became a champion of gender equality, the environment, and growth management, retiring in 2016 — a half-century after she arrived at the Capitol.

Dedicated to the memory of the late Sir Peter Parker
The 2013 Speech Contest took place on Tuesday 12th February 2013 at the SOAS, University of London.
The purpose of the Sir Peter Parker Awards for Spoken Business Japanese is to deepen the understanding of Japanese business culture by businessmen and women of the countries of the European Union through study of the Japanese language, and to contribute to goodwill and mutual understanding with the people of Japan through better communication.
The Sir Peter Parker Awards for Spoken Business Japanese were established in 1990 by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) London, and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London. The Awards are widely recognised as having made a significant contribution to the recent growth in the use of Japanese in business, as well as having benefited participants in their professional careers.
Karen Fraser
Karen Fraser (born September 12, 1944) is a Washington State Senator (Democrat) for the 22nd District, comprising the northern portion of Thurston County, including all of Olympia, Lacey, and most of Tumwater.
Before joining the Senate, she was a former State Representative, Thurston County Commissioner and Mayor of Lacey. She was also the past President of the Washington State Association of Counties.
As of the 2008 Legislative session, she is vice chair and Capital Budget chair of the Ways & Means Committee, and is a member of the Natural Resources, Ocean & Recreation Committee, the Rules Committee, and the Water, Energy & Telecommunications Committee.
Fraser is a candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the 2016 election.
Education
Fraser graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a Masters of Public Administration from the university's Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs. She was founder of the Legislative International Caucus
