TRANSCRIPT: So I continued in mathematics in graduate school but I was drifting toward physics at that time and I hadn't taken any physics but I was drifting in that direction.
So I took my first course in quantum mechanics from Schwinger. And it was an extraordinary course, though I didn't appreciate it really at the time, because I just didn't know anything but I certainly appreciate it now. I mean it was fine, the first part, where he talked about the reasons for there being a quantum theory, but then he had his own development. He was in rivalry with Feynman. Feynman had a quantum theory, Schwinger had a quantum theory and so Schwinger's personal quantum theory was abstract and, I think powerful and abstract, and completely the wrong thing to teach to students.
So we used to go down to MIT and listen to [Victor] Weisskopf lecture on quantum theory. Weisskopf was completely different. I remember the first lecture I heard of Weisskopf. He came in and there was a big class, all men, and he said, 'Boys, I had a wonderful night last night.' And everybody said, 'Yay, Vicky, bravo, bravo.' He said, 'No, no, it's not what you think. I finally understood the Born approximation.' Then he explained the Born approximation

Physics and Society: Essays in Honor of Victor Frederick Weiseskopf by the International Community of Physicists 1998th Edition
by V. Stefan (Editor)
Victor Frederick Weissskopf, (1908—2002), a Jewish born American physicist, is considered one of the true luminaries of the 20th century physics.
Lev Landau, (1908—1968), A Nobel prize winning Soviet physicist, made a number of fundamental contributions in various fields of physics, such as superfluidity theory, superconductivity, (Ginzburg-Landau theory), the theory of Fermi liquid, the quantum theory of diamagnetism, and plasma physics,(Landau damping).
Richard Phillips Feynman, (1918-1988), an American physicist, developed the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics and made fundamental contributions to quantum electrodynamics, the physics of the superfluidity, and particle physics.
Viki in La Jolla, California, (1992)
V. Alexander Stefan talks with Viki Weisskopf: June 17, 1992, La Jolla, California; Victor (VIKI) Frederick Weisskopf of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, visits, (June16-18, 1992), the Institute for Advanced Physics Studies (IAPS). Victor Weisskopf had been the Honorary Science Advisor of the IAPS from 1989 thenceforth. In La Valencia Hotel, where Viki stayed, they would ask about him: Who is that classy man?"
Viki's Physics and Beyond
Among the many breakthroughs that Viki's research has yielded, there have been the theory of the widths of energy levels of the electron, the "Clouded Crystal Ball" model of nuclear structure, and the "MIT Bag" model of hadronic matter.
Weisskopf is the recipient of a great number of honors and awards worldwide; He was President of the American Physical Society, (1960); President of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Director General, (1961-1965), of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN). In 1976, Viki was elected to the Pontifical Academy of Science, an advisory body to the Pope. He focused on the efforts for nuclear disarmament through the Pontifical Academy.
