Alfred, Lord Tennyson "The Charge of the Light Brigade"Wax Cylinder Poem animation
Heres a virtual movie of Alfred Lord Tennyson reading his much celebrated poem "The charge of the light brigade" The Charge of the Light Brigade" is an 1854 narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson about the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. He was the poet laureate of the United Kingdom at the time of the writing of the poem. The sound track comes from a wax cylinder recording he made for an Edison Recording agent in 1890. This poem was recorded alongside several others on a set of twenty three soft wax cylinders most of which have perished eaten by mould.Wax cylinders were made from an organic material rather like hard soap. Although the age of this recording age and the primitive technology sometimes renders words inaudible, Tennyson's voice comes through clearly, intoning the pounding dactylic rhythms of the verse which gives it a breathless momentum.Hearing Tennyson read his poems confirms to me that even late in life as he wasand in poor health no one can read his poetry as effectively as he could, there is a mysterious knocking noise towards the end of the recording of which we can only speculate,it has been suggested that Tennyson may have made the noise in an attempt to create the sound of horses hoofs., Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 -- 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom during much of Queen Victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular poets in the English language ...

Superman recites Alfred, Lord Tennyson's "The Eagle"
Here's my 3-year-old reciting "The Eagle". This is one of the first and smallest poems he has memorized, but it's still one of his very favorites. Here is the text: The Eagle, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson "He clasps the crag with crooked hands; Close to the sun in lonely lands, Ringed with the azure world, he stands. The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls."

Tithonus by Alfred Tennyson
TITHONUS by Alfred Tennyson Read & Produced by CHARLES BRYANT The woods decay, the woods decay and fall, The vapours weep their burthen to the ground, Man comes and tills the field and lies beneath, And after many a summer dies the swan. Me only cruel immortality Consumes; I wither slowly in thine arms, Here at the quiet limit of the world, A white-haird shadow roaming like a dream The ever-silent spaces of the East, Far-folded mists, and gleaming halls of morn. Alas! for this gray shadow, once a man— So glorious in his beauty and thy choice, Who madest him thy chosen, that he seemd To his great heart none other than a God! I askd thee, Give me immortality. Then didst thou grant mine asking with a smile, Like wealthy men who care not how they give. But thy strong Hours indignant workd their wills, And beat me down and marrd and wasted me, And tho they could not end me, left me maimd To dwell in presence of immortal youth, Immortal age beside immortal youth, And all I was in ashes. Can thy love Thy beauty, make amends, tho even now, Close over us, the silver star, thy guide, Shines in those tremulous eyes that fill with tears To hear me? Let me go: take back thy gift: Why should a man desire in any way To vary from the kindly race of men, Or pass beyond the goal of ordinance Where all should pause, as is most meet for all? A soft air fans the cloud apart; there comes A glimpse of that dark world where I was born. Once more the old mysterious glimmer steals From any pure ...

Choric song written by Lord Alfred Tennyson
The Greek word lôtos can refer to several different plants so there is some ambiguity as to which "lotus" appears in the Odyssey. The mariners are likely to have eaten the fruit of the lotus tree or date-plum. However, I have made this video for a friend of mine who loves flowers so the first photo is of the lotus tree and for the rest I have chosen instead to use photos of beautiful lotus flowers. I am reading this wonderful poem "Choric Song" or "Song of The Lotos-Eaters" written by Alfred Lord Tennyson and I would like to thank those whose photos I have used under the Creative Commons Attribution License. en.wikipedia.org commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org

Love and Duty by Alfred Tennyson
This poem investigates (with passion) a theme that seems beyond the social mores of today when love, or making love, has itself become a duty to many people. And even the earnest Victorians, as we know, did not all adhere to the more ascetic side of human nature. Be that as it may, it's a wonderful poem and the language pure hammered gold.

'Ulysses' by Lord Alfred Tennyson
Tennyson reworks the figure of Ulysses by drawing on the ancient hero of Homer's Odyssey ("Ulysses" is the Roman form of the Greek "Odysseus") and the medieval hero of Dante's Inferno. Homer's Ulysses, as described in Scroll XI of the Odyssey, learns from a prophecy that he will take a final sea voyage after killing the suitors of his wife Penelope. The details of this sea voyage are described by Dante in Canto XXVI of the Inferno: Ulysses finds himself restless in Ithaca and driven by "the longing I had to gain experience of the world." Dante's Ulysses is a tragic figure who dies while sailing too far in an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Tennyson combines these two accounts by having Ulysses make his speech shortly after returning to Ithaca and resuming his administrative responsibilities, and shortly before embarking on his final voyage. "Ulysses," like many of Tennyson's other poems, deals with the desire to reach beyond the limits of one's field of vision and the mundane details of everyday life.
