Buffalo, New York
Buffalo () is the second most populous city in the state of New York, behind New York City. Located in Western New York on the eastern shores of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River across from Fort Erie, Ontario, Buffalo is the seat of Erie County and the principal city of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area (which is the largest in Western New York and the larger Upstate New York). Downtown Buffalo is located 17 miles (27 km) south of Niagara Falls (a site drawing millions of tourists each year) and 59 miles (95 km) southeast of Toronto, Ontario (Canada's largest city). The city also lies adjacent to the rapidly growing Golden Horseshoe region of Southern Ontario, which has a population of more than 8 million. Buffalo itself has a population of 270,919 (July 1, 2009 Estimate), and the Buffalo–Niagara–Cattaraugus Combined Statistical Area is home to 1,203,997 residents. If the neighboring Regional Municipality of Niagara in Canada is included, the population of the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Region is 1,631,418 residents. Additionally, Buffalo-Niagara is considered to be a part of the Great Lakes Megalopolis, which contains an estimated 54 million people.

I don't often write on facebook but I felt this was a video worth sharing. We are staying at a RV site on Mayport Naval base in Jacksonville, FL right on the port. While listening to the news I heard that the USS Sullian was retuning to its... home port after a seven month deployment in the Pursian Gulf. Within 20 minutes it was in sight. What an awesome experience. People were gathered on the shore welcoming the Sailors who were all dressed in dress whites on deck. I heard one man say to two little boys, 'Look, there's mommy in the middle'. So often we take for granted the freedoms we all have because of sacrfices of everyone in the military. Today was a "lump in the throat" reminder.

Celebrating Local Veterans
A Veteran's Day Skunkbeat with Katie www.skunkpost.com Since November 11, 1918, the day the armistice to end World War I was signed by Germany and the Allies; this date has been recognized as a day to honor veterans of military service. Today we celebrate two local men, among many others, who made the ultimate sacrifice to fight for our country: Williamsvile native Blake Whipple, a US Army Specialist and Allegany County's Jason Dunham of the United States Marine Corps. We also recognize a piece of military history located right here in Buffalo, the Naval destroyer, USS The Sullivans. A special thank you to all veterans and current military servers.

November 13 1942, after being heavily damaged in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the Atlanta Class light cruiser USS Juneau was struck by a single torpdeo from the Japanese Submarine I-26 and lost. Of her crew of 820 only ten would survive the rest succombed died from the explosion that sank the ship or died during the eight days they were left in the water due to either sharks, dehydration or exposure, among the dead were the five Sullivan Brothers who chose to enlist together and wouldn't allow anyone or anything to seperate them Sadly the lessons of the Juneau would not be taken to heart, and history would repeat itself three years later with USS Indianapolis. USS Little Rock Reunion 2009
This was a Reunion for the members of the USS Little Rock Association, held on 18 July 2009 at the Buffalo Naval & Military Park. The Sullivans Division of the USNSCC performed the Color Guard and we got a very warm welcome and all the cadets did a very fine job. Bravo Zulu! Cadets! You make me proud. Staff was busy with getting Orders out for Cadets getting ready for Boot Camps and also other Cadets Helping with the Renovation on a New Compartment we graciously received from the Buffalo Naval & Military Park to call our permanent home aboard the USS Little Rock. USS The Sullivans
Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS The Sullivans, named in honor of the five Sullivan brothers who lost their lives when their ship, USS Juneau (CL-52), was sunk in November 1942. This was the greatest sacrifice by any one family during World War II.
The first, , was a Fletcher-class destroyer, launched in 1943. In 1977, she was processed for donation to the city of Buffalo, N.Y., where she now serves as a memorial. The Niland family, which endured the second greatest sacrifice by any one family during the war, was from the Buffalo suburb of Kenmore and their similar sacrifice to the Sullivan family played a role in the decision to place The Sullivans as a museum ship in Buffalo instead of elsewhere.
The second, , is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, launched in 1995. As of 2010, she is still active in service.
