BBC World News: Al-Qaeda leaders' talks 'sparked US embassy closures'
Intercepted conversations between two senior al-Qaeda figures prompted Sunday's closure of many American diplomatic missions, US media report. The talk, involving top leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, represented one of the most serious plots since the 9/11 attacks, the New York Times says. The US earlier said the closures in North Africa and the Middle East were "out of an abundance of caution". Some 20 US embassies and consulates were shut on Sunday. A state department global travel alert, issued last week, is also in force until the end of August. US diplomatic posts in Abu Dhabi, Amman, Cairo, Riyadh, Dhahran, Jeddah, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Manama, Muscat, Sanaa and Tripoli will remain closed until Saturday. Several European countries have also temporarily shut missions in Yemen and the UK Foreign Office is advising against all travel to the country. At press briefings, both the White House and the US state department said the threat came from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), but refused to divulge further details, reports the BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan, in Washington. But according to the New York Times, the US intercepted communications between Zawahiri and the group's head in Yemen, Nasser al-Wuhayshi. The paper said that no targets had been singled out in the discussions, but that a possible attack appeared to be imminent. A US official told the Associated Press news agency that Zawahiri's message had been picked up several weeks ago and appeared initially targeted at Yemen. US lawmakers have said it was a huge plot in the final stages, but have offered no specifics. On Monday, a top member of the House intelligence committee Dutch Ruppersberger told CNN the warnings were not designed to frighten Americans, though he said a planned attack could be "anywhere". "Americans should live their lives... we just want them to be aware," Representative Ruppersberger said. White House spokesman Jay Carney said he could not be "specific" about the threats. He said: "Our current information suggests that al-Qaeda and affiliated organisations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond. And our information suggests that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August." Meanwhile, officials in Yemen have released the names of 25 al-Qaeda suspects, saying they had been planning attacks targeting "foreign offices and organisations and Yemeni installations" in the capital of Sanaa and other cities across the country. There was also increased security at government buildings and checkpoints in Yemen on Monday. AQAP, the Yemeni branch of al-Qaeda, has also been blamed for the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit and explosives-laden parcels that were intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights. Seven suspected al-Qaeda militants were killed in two US drone air strikes in southern Yemen in June, officials say.- published: 06 Aug 2013

Yahya Hahouri is a Yemeni madkhali scholar who used to be Rabee al-Madkhalis' best friend. He is the teacher of Dar-al hadith religious school in Dammaj, Yemen. In 2011, The Shia Houthis imposed a siege on his town, then, fight broke out between the Houthis and his students. On December 3, the leader of the Ansar al-Sharia in Yemen Shaykh Nasir al-Wuhayshi announced they would be deploying fighters to Dammaj to combat the Houthis. 10 killed, 4 injured in Yemen prison attack
Gunmen have attacked the central prison in the Yemeni capital Sana'a, helping a number of inmates there to escape. At least seven policemen and three gunmen were killed in ensuing clashes. Yemen's official news agency says the attack started with a car bomb that exploded at the gate of the prison. It says the militants exchanged fire with guards afterwards. Reports say over a dozen inmates, mostly members of al-Qaeda, fled amid the chaos. Back in August, the chief of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Nasser al-Wuhayshi vowed to free the jailed members of his network. Wuhayshi himself escaped from the same Sana'a prison with 22 other fellow-members in February 2006. He was named as the group's leader a year later.- published: 14 Feb 2014

Al Qaeda issues message about September 11th
Americans commemorated this week the loss of those who died at the hands of al Qaeda terrorists on September 11, 2001. Their leader chimed in a day later with new threats against the United States. Ayman al-Zawahiri called on his followers in an audio message posted on the Internet on Thursday to "land a large strike on it, even if it takes years of patience for this." 9/11 anniversary: 'Our hearts still ache,' Obama says Al-Zawahiri has headed al Qaeda, since a U.S. military operation killed his predecessor and al Qaeda's founder, Osama bin Laden, in May 2011 in Pakistan. In his message, he claimed victory against the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan. He called on terrorists to continue the battle on American soil. Al Qaeda leader orders immediate action Al-Zawahiri named the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15 as an example of such an attack. Read more: Jihadist terrorism in America since 9/11 He encouraged his followers to provoke the United States into spending more on security, in order to "bleed America economically." In August the Obama administration closed 19 embassies and consulates across the Middle East and North Africa after intercepting communications between al Qaeda leaders indicating possible strikes on U.S. interests. In a message between al-Zawahiri and a top ally in Yemen, Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the leader of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the terror chief told the Yemeni commander to "do something," which U.S. officials inferred to mean an attack. In his audio message Thursday, Zawahiri also claimed victory over the United States in Yemen. But extensive drone attacks there allegedly carried out by the United States over the past two years have whittled away at al Qaeda's infrastructure and killed key leaders, diminishing its ability to carry out attacks.- published: 13 Sep 2013

http://poxyrants.blogspot.com/ https://twitter.com/PoxySquirrel https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001782467676 FORT HOOD, Texas -- The second day of the court-martial of Maj. Nidal Hasan, the radicalized Army psychiatrist accused of carrying out one of the deadliest gun attacks ever on a U.S. military base, is scheduled to start Wednesday in a Fort Hood courtroom. Military prosecutors are expected to call more eyewitnesses to the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting rampage that left 13 people dead and more than 30 wounded. In his brief opening statement Tuesday, Hasan, who is representing himself, admitted to being the shooter and carrying out the attacks on behalf of the mujahideen, or holy warriors. An American-born Muslim, Hasan, 42, was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan a few weeks after the shooting. Witnesses on Tuesday described the harrowing scene inside Building 42003 of the base's Soldier Readiness Center complex, when Hasan bellowed "Allahu akbar!" -- "God is great" -- and fired on unarmed soldiers using an FN 5.7 semiautomatic handgun. Emptying and reloading high-capacity magazines, Hasan fired more than 200 rounds inside and outside the building, prosecutors said. WASHINGTON — A Libyan militia leader has been charged in last year's terrorist attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead, two federal officials said. Ahmed Kattalah is the first person to be charged in the Sept. 11 incident that sparked a political firestorm about the initial U.S. response to the assault. Because the charges remain under seal, the officials were not authorized to comment publicly. The Justice Department declined to comment on specific charges Tuesday. "The department's investigation is ongoing,'' Justice spokesman Andy Ames said. "It has been, and remains, a top priority. We have no further comment at this time." Ahmed Kattalah has been described as the founder of Ansar al-Sharia, a Libyan extremist group. NBC said investigators have been saying for months that they believe he was at the consulate during the attack. The Obama administration has come under strong attack from some conservatives in Congress who accuse it of covering up failures to secure the consulate before and during Sept. 11, 2012, attack. When the Sept. 11, 2001, plot was hatched, Nasir al-Wuhayshi was serving as Osama bin Laden's personal assistant in Afghanistan. A half-decade later, after a daring break from a Yemeni prison, Wuhayshi became the architect of the al- Qaeda affiliate that experts say poses the biggest threat to the United States. Yet the man at the heart of a terrorism alert that has shut down U.S. embassies in the Muslim world and elsewhere has managed to keep a strikingly low profile in the West. That is likely to change, experts say, as Wuhayshi uses his growing stature to urge the loose network of cells that subscribe to al-Qaeda's ideology to place greater emphasis on planning attacks on the West, rather than focusing on domestic enemies. U.S. officials have stressed that much of al-Qaeda, particularly its core in Pakistan, has been severely weakened by a prolonged campaign of drone strikes. In Yemen, drone strikes killed Anwar al-Awlaki, the American cleric whose propaganda inspired other jihadis, in 2011, as well as Wuhayshi's deputy, Said Ali al-Shihri, this year. Still, the haste with which U.S. officials have responded to the latest threat, evacuating diplomats and aid workers from Yemen aboard military aircraft, underscores how menacing Wuhayshi's group — known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula — has become.- published: 07 Aug 2013

The World's 10 Most Wanted
The World's 10 Most Wanted
The World's 10 Most Wanted Men 10.Doku Umarov 09.Joseph Kony The head of the Lord's Resistance Army, a guerrilla group trying to establish a theocratic government, Kony has driven the killing of civilians in Uganda and, more recently, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and Sudan. Under Kony the LRA has displaced 2 million people and Kony has directed the abduction of 60,000, including 30,000 children, forcing them to fight in his campaign of murder, rape, mutilation and sexual slavery. He reputedly forces children to murder their own parents as part of their initiation into his group. The LRA has killed an estimated 2,400 civilians since 2008. The International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for his arrest, indicting Kony on 33 charges, including crimes against humanity and war crimes. 08.Felicien Kabuga The most-wanted man in Africa is accused of being the key financier behind one of the worst genocides in human history. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda recently started special depositions in the case against him for "serious offenses under the 1949 Geneva Conventions, crimes against humanity and genocide," in connection with the massacre of over 800,000 Rwandans in 1994. The depositions were initiated by prosecutors who feared evidence against Kabuga would be lost or deteriorate due to the passage of time or death of witnesses. Kabuga's radio station incited violence against Rwanda's Tutsi population. He also provided transportation, and machetes and hoes that were used as weapons. 07.Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov Originally from Uzbekistan, Tokhtakhounov is a big-time Russian mobster known as "Taiwanchik" for his Asian features. The U.S. government calls him a "major figure in international Eurasian Organized Crime" who has been involved in "drug distribution, illegal arms sales and trafficking in stolen vehicles." He is suspected of fixing everything from beauty pageants to Olympic events in Utah. In 2002 the U.S. government indicted him for bribing Olympic figure skating judges. The U.S. tried to get him after he was arrested in Italy, but the Italians eventually freed Tokhtakhounov. 06.Matteo Messina Denaro The head of the Italian mafia is trying to survive the Italian police's historic assault on the world's most infamous criminal group. In recent months, most of the most-wanted mafia fugitives, like Giorgio De Masi, have been nabbed by Italian police. Denaro has managed to remain free. Nicknamed "Diabolic," Denaro was only emerging as a leader of the Italian mafia following the capture of Bernardo Provenzano when Denaro appeared on the first Forbes Most Wanted list three years ago. Since then arrests of other top mafia men leave no doubt that he is the new boss. The Italian mafia's playboy, Denaro is known for living a fast lifestyle, driving Porches and fancying Rolex watches. 05.Nasir al-Wuhayshi Osama Bin Laden's former secretary, al-Wuhayshi is the leader of Al Qaeda's increasingly powerful affiliate in Yemen, known as Al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula. He escaped from a maximum security prison in Yemen in 2006 and is able to operate in an unstable country that is perfect for cultivating new recruits and money. Al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula has clearly indicated a desire to attack the U.S., taking responsibility for underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and, according to Abdulhakim Muhammad, backing his deadly assault at a military recruiting office in Little Rock. 04.Semion Mogilevich The face of Russian organized crime was briefly arrested in 2008 in Russia amid accusations of tax evasion at a cosmetics retailer. His lawyers said Mogilevich was innocent of the tax charges, and he was released in 2009. The U.S. had asked that he be handed over in connection with a $150 million stock fraud, but with no extradition treaty between the U.S. and Russia, there was never much chance of it. The FBI sees Mogilevich as more than just a stock swindler and links him to allegations ranging from murder-for-hire to weapons trafficking to possibly trafficking in nuclear materials. Mogilevich has denied such accusations, but last year the FBI set up a special Threat Focus Cell to focus on Mogilevich, indicating that he is still seen as a major criminal threat. 03.Dawood Ibrahim 02.Ayman al-Zawahiri Joaquìn Guzmàn The world's most wanted man. Known as El Chapo, or Shorty, he has been extending his violent control over corridors in Mexico used to smuggle cocaine and marijuana into the U.S. He is believed to be hiding in the mountains of Northwest Mexico in the state of Durango. Guzmàn has evaded capture ever since 2001, when he escaped from a Mexican prison in a laundry cart after Mexican courts ruled he could be extradited to the U.S. At age 53, he now leads the Sinaloa cartel. The DEA believes he is more powerful today than he was two or three years ago. Source: www.Forbes.com- published: 10 Oct 2013
