Report
Italian Marco Pantani asserted his dominance on the Giro d'Italia for the second year in a row when he took the Maglia
Rose after being part of a decisive break on
Stage 14 which was won by Paolo Savoldelli. He was very restrained in the
Piedmont Mountains but still took the jersey of
French rider Laurent Jalabert. But the 26-year old Savoldelli was very aggressive especially on the descent from the Fauniera, a very high pass at 2511m and near to the French border. The route was a former military pass saw Savoldelli attack followed by
Spaniard Jose Maria Jimenez, one of the main contenders to
Pantani in the mountains.
The first attack came at 1750 metres and split the main group. Jalabert was wise and followed at his own tempo.
Jimenez and Ivan Gotti were near to the front group but were not interested in driving the break. Pantani was prudent at first being content to follow without going away himself.
At the summit, 61 kms from the end, Pantania was thirty seconds behind the three leaders (Missaglia,
Caucchioli, Pena). At 1 minutes was
Gotti and at 2.46 was a group with Jalabert.
Pantani said: "
The descent was very dangerous. I preferred to not take any risks." Gotto, was near. Then Savoldelli, who was
2.00 behind Pantani at the summit, rejoined the group on the descent across the
Stura Valley. His descent was hair raising. Savoldelli (9th in the
Giro last year) then attacked on the last climb with
Gabriele Missaglia, eventually dropping him.
At Borgo San Dalmazzo, a town which is located between two alpine valleys, Pantani sprinted into second place at 1.47 behind Savoldelli. Jalabert came in a further
1.41 down after some great defensive riding in the closing kms. Jimenez was gone as was world champion Oscar Camenzind (who lost nearly 4.00).
