He made his debut on the wing for Japan in 1996 and clocked up 69 tries in 58 tests for the Cherry Blossoms. Upon overtaking David Campese's record of 64, Ohata was greeted with rapturous applause from Japanese rugby fans but discouraging indifference from other Test-playing nations. Ohata broke Campeses's record with the second try of his hat-trick against Georgia in May 2006. Ohata was a prolific try scorer, regardless of the opposition. His turn of pace and ability to carve apart defences marked him out as a player who is successful because of ability rather than the inadequacy of his opponents. He notched tries against France, Ireland, Wales and Argentina. Ohata played at two World Cups and was part of the Japanese team that managed to restore some pride in their badge following years of embarrassment at their 145-17 mauling to New Zealand in 1995, with battling displays against Scotland and the USA during the World Cup in 2003.
