ATTICA (1980) Morgan Freeman
This 97 minute docu-drama produced by Louis Rudolph as a made for Television movie for ABC (original airdate: March 3rd, 1980), was nominated for 5 Emmy Awards -- including: Outstanding Film Editing (Paul LaMastra); and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Direction of a Television Special (Marvin Chomsky, Director). The film is an eloquent condensation and gripping re-creation of events leading up to and during the inmate rebellion at the Attica Correctional Facility, in New York State, in September of 1971 (which climaxed in the worst instance of Americans slaughtering other Americans since the Civil War). The cast included: Charles Durning, Morgan Freeman, George Grizzard, David Harris, Roger Mosley, and Anthony Zerbe. Directed by Marvin Chomsky, from a script by James Henerson; based on the book - A Time to Die - by New York Times correspondent Tom Wicker (who was present during the uprising, having been requested by the inmates as a member of the civilian arbitrating committee). Cinematography by Don Birnkrant; Edited by Paul LaMastra, ACE

69th.Annual.Golden.G-splitter - Morgan Freeman Movie clips
With an authoritative voice and calm demeanour, this ever popular American actor has grown into one of the most respected figures in modern US cinema. Born in June 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee, the young Freeman attended Los Angeles Community College before serving several years in the US Air Force as a mechanic between 1955 and 1959. His first dramatic arts exposure was on the stage and he appeared in an off-Broadway production of "The Nigger Lovers" and also in an all-African American production of the exuberant musical Hello, Dolly! (1969). Freeman first appeared on TV screens as several characters including "Easy Reader", "Mel Mounds" and "Count Dracula" on the Children's Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) show "The Electric Company" (1971). He then moved into feature film with another children's adventure, Who Says I Can't Ride a Rainbow! (1971). Next, there was a small role in the thriller Blade (1973); then he played "Casca" in Julius Caesar (1979) (V) and the title role in Coriolanus (1979) (V). Regular work was coming in for the talented Freeman and he appeared in the prison dramas Attica (1980) (TV) and Brubaker (1980), the slow-moving Eyewitness (1981), and portrayed the final 24 hours of slain Malcolm X in Death of a Prophet (1981) (TV). For most of the 1980s, Freeman continued to contribute decent enough performances in films that fluctuated in their quality. However, he really stood out, scoring an Oscar nomination as a merciless hoodlum in Street Smart ...

Splitting the Sky •Gender: Male •Industry: Education About Me I am Dacajeweiah "Splitting the Sky" aka John Bancore and John Hill, a Mohawk, a principal leader of the Attica rebellion, a leader within the American Indian Movement with the League of Indigenous Sovereign Nations, in particular at Gustafen Lake BC, and now a 9/11 Truth researcher, advocate and speaker. I am also a part time film and screen actor, as well as a carpenter. My Website: www.splittingthesky.net Interests •Exposing lies and corruption •and revealing the truth ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Splitting the Sky (born January 7, 1952) is an activist, struggling for justice for the indigenous peoples of the Americas. His Mohawk name, Dacajeweiah, translated into English is "Splitting the Sky". He was born in Buffalo, New York, colonized as "John Boncore", and also became known as "John Hill". From the age of seven, Splitting the Sky survived many years in New York foster homes and youth detention centers in which he was ill-treated. Eventually he would become the only man convicted as a ringleader of the infamous 1971 Attica State Prison rebellion in upstate New York, in the course of which 43 inmates were killed. This event has inspired several movies -- "Against the Wall" (1994) starring Samuel L. Jackson, and "Attica" (1980) starring Morgan Freeman -- and documentaries including "Attica" (1974), and ...

1980 New Mexico State Penitentiary prison riot - documentary
Documentary about the 1980 New Mexico State Penitentiary Riots in which 33 inmates were killed. A truly chilling programme, when the inmates had control of the prison they dished out some truely brutal behaviour on fellow prisoners who were suspected of being snitches orsex offenders. en.wikipedia.org

The Attica Prison Uprising: Forty Years Later
The prisoners filling the cells of New York's Attica prison in 1971 faced inhumane conditions. They earned 56 cents per day for manual labor in searing workshops, were only allowed one bar of soap a month and could only shower once every two weeks. They were not allowed to read what they wanted to read and there was no due process in parole hearings. The prison population was largely black and Hispanic, controlled by an all-white guard staff. After years of agitation by civil rights activists and the black power movement, the authorities across America were beginning to push back. When tempers reached a boiling point on September 9, the prisoners erupted in a full-fledged rebellion, taking over the prison and holding it for four days, along with several guards who had been taken hostage. But when the negotiations broke down over the point of amnesty for violence conducted during the take-over of the complex, the mood in and outside the prison soured. By the time state troopers and police forces had retaken Attica by force on the morning of September 13, ten hostages and twenty-nine inmates had died. In this video produced by The Nation's Frank Reynolds and Liliana Segura, lawyer Elizabeth FInk, former national guardsman Tad Crawford and former Attica prisoners Carlos Roche and Joseph "Jazz" Hayden recount what happened during those days forty years ago, and the repercussions still being felt from the uprising.
