The UN Security Council has approved a resolution that gives West African nations 45 days to offer details of a plan for international military intervention in Mali, now split in two. The text approved by the council on Friday also urges authorities in Bamako and representatives of Tuareg rebels and Islamist fighters controlling the north to "engage, as soon as possible, in a credible negotiation process". The members warned that the process should be undertaken with a view towards "a sustainable political solution, mindful of the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Mali". Mali descended into chaos in March when soldiers toppled the president, leaving a power vacuum that enabled Tuareg rebels to seize two-thirds of the country. Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from New York.

The forecast from the International Monetary Fund's debt inspectors comes a year after EU leaders applauded what they considered a key deal to save Athens. NEW YORK, USA, 12 June 2008 -- The UN International Labour Organization has designated today the World Day against Child Labour. Observed annually, it is a day to raise awareness about the cycle of poverty that results when children must work and therefore miss out on educational opportunities. UNICEF estimates that there are 158 million children under the age of 15 who are trapped in child labour around the world. The vast majority of these children have little hope of gaining access to education or to shrug off the burden of illiteracy that threatens to undermine their future. Education is a basic right of all children. Eliminating incentives for children to work is a key component of getting them into school, along with education programmes that are free and child-friendly. www.unicef.org
