Music for the Eyes
Music for the Eyes started out as a collection of rugs and things from Central Asia--the five countries with names ending in 'stan after the break-up of the former Soviet Union (Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.) Some people say our shop is more of a museum, because we include pictures and artifacts we collected from those countries. You can see and buy a variety of things, from tent bands to musical instruments, to jewelry and robes.

GOCHMYRAT GUTLYYEV, TURKMENISTAN
Host: Appalshop, Whitesburg, KY
Artist—Gutlyyev collects and performs Turkmen stories as a folktale narrator, writer and blogger. Living in a multinational town that borders Afghanistan, he also investigates the ethnographical aspects of interactions between people of different cultural backgrounds. In his conversational style, he has begun to chronicle stories of Turkmen life and culture in literary form as short stories and essays, and more recently a blog. He hopes to expand his writing into a book-length work and would like to participate in discussions, meetings, classes and other events with US folklorists, writers and bloggers.
Gutlyyev was interviewed after his 2011 ArtsLink Residency.

Iraq Suicide Bombers Kill Dozens
WONG:
In Iraq suicide bombers attacks appearing to target Shi'ite pilgrims, descending on Baghdad for a major religious event, and a separate blast in the northern city of Kirkuk during a protest over provincial election laws, killed at least 50 people.
STORY:
Suicide bombers set off three blasts in Baghdad. At least 28 people have been killed and more than 90 wounded. The attacks happened in rapid succession in a central district through which thousands of Shi'ite pilgrims are passing en route to the Kadhamiya Shrine.
The bombers were women - better able to evade the security measures more strictly enforced on men.
Despite the bloodshed the pilgrims say they won't be deterred.
[Thaer Abid Nour, Shi'ite Pilgrim]:
"We've come from the al-Aziziya area of al-Hafriya town. We intend to visit the shrine of Moussa al-Kadhim, God willing, and the blasts that happened today will not defeat us. They will strengthen our resolve to make this visit and defeat terrorism."
Gunfire erupted in the northern oil city of Kirkuk after a separate bombing that killed at least 22 more people. Again the number of wounded ran into the dozens. The blast happened during as thousands demonstrated against new laws on provincial elections. A Turkmen political office was also wrecked by armed demonstrators in the wake of the blast.
Police say the demonstrators had sought refuge inside the building but came under fire from guards who feared they were under attack.
A curfew has been imposed on the city until Tuesday.
Violence is at its lowest level in four years in Iraq, but the U.S. military says it expects high-profile attacks from insurgents looking to grab media attention and show they are still a potent force.

Ride the Caspian
Bahar Behbahani and Almagul Menlibayeva, 2011
Two-channel, HD video
Time: 12:46
Almagul Menlibayeva (Kazakhstan) and Bahar Behbahani (Iran/USA) present
Ride the Caspian (2011) a two-channel video installation that creates a dialogue
between Kazakhstan and Iran, two cultures situated at the crossroads of the
Middle East and Central Asia, adjacent to one another and bound by the Caspian
Sea.
Menlibayeva’s and Behbahani’s collaborative project explores a contemporary
relationship between two ancient cultures—featuring both the nomadic pagan
traditions of the Turkic/Kazakh tribes, apparent in the post-soviet environment of
Kazakhstan, and the wide reaching Persian traditions of a settled people with a
complex authoritarian structure, located in the territory of Muslim Iran.
Deliberate conceptual and aesthetic juxtapositions are elemental to the work.
Vistas of oil wells dotting the vast arid Kazakh Steppes appear side by side with
views of a plein-air salon—two formal chairs and a pedestal with flowers atop a
traditional Turkmen carpet—on the shore of the Caspian Sea. In these richly
contrasting environments, contemplative scenarios aesthetically reminiscent of
the traditional Persian miniature style unfold in opposition to the dramatic
performance of a mysterious fertility ritual. In one scene, two officials dressed in
western clothing sitting by the sea seem to gaze with mild interest at a furwrapped
stiletto-heeled female creature whose seductive gestures at once mime
and defy the steady movement of the oil pumps that surround her. At odds with
her raw eroticism are women wearing headscarves and dancing with mannerist
doll-like movements. With these and other poignant contradictions, Ride the
Caspian presents a suite of provocative double-entendres that cross cultural and
political borders.
