Tracy Smith is a CBS News correspondent for CBS News Sunday Morning, in addition to reports she does for The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley, and "48 Hours Mystery". Smith is a former Channel One News anchor and correspondent. She is married to CBS Sunday Morning producer John D'Amelio. She served as both co-anchor of the Saturday Early Show and a national correspondent for The Early Show from August 2005 through May 2007. Smith was succeeded by Maggie Rodriguez. Smith gave birth to twins, son John Jr. and daughter Gia, on March 19, 2008.

Smith was born in Wyoming, Ohio. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree from Boston University in 1990. She subsequently earned a master's degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California in 1993.^[1]

Poet Tina Chang

Tina Chang is an American poet, teacher, and editor. She is currently (2010) Poet Laureate of Brooklyn.

Chang was born in 1969 in Oklahoma, to Chinese immigrants, who had met in Montreal, where her mother was working as a nurse and her father was earning his doctorate in physics. The family moved to New York when she was a year old. She was also raised in New York City. During her young age, Chang and her brother were sent to live in Taiwan with relatives for two years. “I started questioning even at a very young age, well, what is language?” she said. “What is the role of words?” ^[1]

She later attended Binghamton University. A professor at Binghamton University was the first to say, “I really think that you can be a poet.” in her junior year. She was tickled but unsure what that meant, so she pursued a string of typical English-major jobs: teaching, advertising, publishing. She received her master of fine art's degree in poetry from Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where she studied with Lucie Brock-Broido, Lucille Clifton, Alfred Corn, Mark Doty and Richard Howard. She currently teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and Hunter College.

Along with poets Nathalie Handal and Ravi Shankar, she is the co-editor of Language for a New Century: Contemporary Poetry from the Middle East, Asia and Beyond, W. W. Norton, 2008. Her latest collection of poetry, Of Gods & Strangers, was published October 2011.

Her work has appeared in numerous journals such as McSweeney's and Ploughshares.^[2]

She has held residencies at MacDowell Colony, Djerassi Artist's Residency, Vermont Studio Center, Fundacion Valparaiso, Ragdale, the Constance Saltonstall Foundation, Blue Mountain Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, among others.

Chang was elected Brooklyn Poet Laureate in 2010.^{[3] [4]} She has received grants and awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Barbara Deming Memorial Foundation/Money for Women, and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Poets & Writers and The Academy of American Poets. She has also won a Dana Award for poetry.

Finalist for an Asian American Literary Award from the Asian American Writers' Workshop, for Half-Lit Houses.

Tracy K. Smith (born April 16, 1972) is an African American poet and educator.^[1] She has published three collections of poetry. Her collection Life on Mars won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.^[2][3] About this collection, Joel Brouwer wrote in 2011: "Smith shows herself to be a poet of extraordinary range and ambition…. As all the best poetry does, “Life on Mars” first sends us out into the magnificent chill of the imagination and then returns us to ourselves, both changed and consoled."^[4]

Smith is a native of Falmouth, Massachusetts.^[1] She was raised in northern California in a family with "deep roots" in Alabama. She received her B.A. from Harvard University in 1994, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Columbia University in 1997. From 1997 to 1999 she was a Stegner Fellow in poetry at Stanford University. She has taught at the City University of New York, the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University. In 2006 she joined the faculty of Princeton University, where she teaches creative writing.^[5][6]

In his review of Life on Mars, Troy Jollimore selects Smith's poem "My god, it's full of stars" as particularly strong, "making use of images from science and science fiction to articulate human desire and grief, as the speaker allows herself to imagine the universe:"^[3]

. . . sealed tight, so nothing escapes. Not even time,

Which should curl in on itself and loop around like smoke.

So that I might be sitting now beside my father

As he raises a lit match to the bowl of his pipe

For the first time in the winter of 1959.

In his review of the collection, Joel Brouwer also quoted at length from this poem, writing that "for Smith the abyss seems as much a space of possibility as of oblivion:"^[4]

Perhaps the great error is believing we’re alone,

That the others have come and gone — a momentary blip —

When all along, space might be choc-full of traffic,

Bursting at the seams with energy we neither feel

Nor see, flush against us, living, dying, deciding,

...

Dan Chiasson writes of another aspect of the collection, "The issues of power and paternalism suggest the deep ways in which this is a book about race. Smith’s deadpan title is itself racially freighted: we can’t think about one set of fifties images, of Martians and sci-fi comics, without conjuring another, of black kids in the segregated South. Those two image files are situated uncannily close to each other in the cultural cortex, but it took this book to connect them."^[7]

Smith lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Raphael Allison, and their daughter.^[8]

Oni Buchanan (born 1975) is an American poet, and pianist. Her most recent poetry collection is Spring (University of Illinois Press, 2008), a 2007 National Poetry Series winner. Her discography includes three solo piano CDs on the independent Velvet Ear Records label.^[1] Her concert programming is often interdisciplinary in nature. She has performed solo recitals throughout the U.S. and abroad.^[2][3] She graduated from the University of Virginia, from the New England Conservatory of Music, with a Master’s degree in piano performance, and from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop an M.F.A. in poetry. Her teachers included Russell Sherman, Stephen Drury, Daniel Epstein, Patricia Zander, Uriel Tsachor, and Mimi Tung.

Oni Buchanan’s second poetry collection, Spring, is an exercise in language as vessel for spiritual experience and reverence for nature. As a musician and a poet, she puts more emphasis on sound than on syntax, and her poems are driven more by harmony and assonance than by grammar. Just as music hides melodies inside harmonies and accompaniments, Buchanan hides poetry within poetry, and she seeks out the physical representation of these layers throughout the collection. The culmination of this technique can be seen in “The Mandrake Vehicles,” the final section of the collection (which is also presented as a flash animation on an accompanying CD), but she introduces her reader to hidden poetry as early as the collection’s supernumerary prologue poem.^[4]

I’ve read it upwards of ten times. I’ve spent hours with it, sat down with it in my apartment at various times of day and night, carried it on the subway to and from work, and tucked it away for a few long train rides. I can say that I’ve tried, and then tried again. But after all the self-conscious worry about missing something here, about Doty’s name somehow giving it validation, I simply cannot subscribe.^[5]

Hans Magnus Enzensberger (born 11 November 1929 in Kaufbeuren), is a German author, poet, translator and editor. He has also written under the pseudonym Andreas Thalmayr. He lives in Munich.

According to a May 2010 article and interview,^[1] Enzensberger was born in 1929 in a small town in Bavaria and is the eldest of four boys. He is part of the last generation of intellectuals whose writing was shaped by first-hand experience of the Third Reich.^[2] The Enzensberger family moved to Nuremberg, the ceremonial birthplace of National Socialism, in 1931.^[1] Julius Streicher, the founder and publisher of Der Stürmer, was their next-door neighbour. Hans Magnus joined the Hitler Youth in his teens, but was expelled soon afterwards. "I have always been incapable of being a good comrade. I can't stay in line. It's not in my character. It may be a defect, but I can't help it."^[1]

Enzensberger studied literature and philosophy at the universities of Erlangen, Freiburg and Hamburg, and at the Sorbonne in Paris, receiving his doctorate in 1955 for a thesis about Clemens Brentano's poetry.^[3] Until 1957 he worked as a radio editor in Stuttgart. He participated in several gatherings of Group 47. Between 1965 and 1975 he edited the magazine "Kursbuch". Since 1985 he has been the editor of the prestigious book series Die Andere Bibliothek, published in Frankfurt, and now containing almost 250 titles. Enzensberger is the founder of the monthly TransAtlantik. His own work has been translated into more than 40 languages.^[3]

Enzensberger is the older brother of the author Christian Enzensberger.

Enzensberger has a sarcastic, ironic tone in many of his poems. For example, the poem "Middle Class Blues" consists of various typicalities of middle class life, with the phrase "we can't complain" repeated several times, and concludes with "what are we waiting for?". Many of his poems also feature themes of civil unrest over economic and class based issues. Though primarily a poet and essayist, he also makes excursions into theater, film, opera, radio drama, reportage, translation. He has written novels and several books for children (including The Number Devil, an exploration of mathematics) and is co-author of a book for German as a foreign language (Die Suche). He also invented and collaborated in the construction of a machine which automatically composes poems. It was used during the 2006 Football World Cup to commentate on games.

In 2009, Enzensberger received a special Lifetime Recognition Award given by the trustees of the Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry,^[3] which also awards the annual Griffin Poetry Prize.
