Among the heroes who gave their lives was Mao Zedong's son, Mao Anying. Mao Anying was deployed to Korea as part of the Volunteer Army on October the 19th, 1950. On November the 25th – just 36 days later – he was killed in a US bombing raid.
In April 1953, Mao Zedong invited Deng Fangzhi, the mother of fallen soldier Huang Jiguang, to Zhongnanhai. The two bereaved parents held each other’s hands tightly. Mao Zedong said: "You have lost a son, as have I. Their sacrifice was glorious. As their parents, we share in their glory."

Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un visits Chinese People's Volunteers Martyrs Cemetery
Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, visited the Martyrs Cemetery of the Chinese People's Volunteers in Hoechang County of South Phyongan Province and paid a noble tribute to the martyrs on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteers' entry into the Korean front.
Present on the occasion were Choe Ryong Hae, Ri Pyong Chol and Kim Tok Hun, Members of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the WPK; and Pak Jong Chon, Kim Jae Ryong, Ri Il Hwan and Kim Hyong Jun, Members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the WPK.
Also on hand were Foreign Minister Ri Son Gwon; Admiral Kim Myong Sik and General Kim Kwang Hyok, Commanders of Services of the Korean People's Army; Ri Yong Chol, Chairman of the Hoechang County Party Committee; and Kim In Chol, Chairman of the Hoechang County People's Committee.
A guard of honour of the KPA was lining up at the Martyrs Cemetery of the Chinese People's Volunteers.
When Kim Jong Un arrived at the Memorial Tower for the Fallen Soldiers of the Chinese People's Volunteers together with senior officials of the Party, the government and the military, the national anthem of the People's Republic of China and the DPRK national anthem--Patriotic Song--were played solemnly.
Amid the wreath-laying playing music, placed at the tower were the floral basket in the name of Kim Jong Un, the supreme leader of the Party, the state and the armed forces of Korea, and the floral baskets in the name of the Central Committee and the Central Military Commission of the WPK, the State Affairs Commission, the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly and the Cabinet of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the KPA.
Kim Jong Un observed a moment's silence in memory of the martyrs of the Chinese People's Volunteers.
And then, he called at the tomb of Mao Anying lying in state in the Martyrs Cemetery of the Chinese People's Volunteers.
The floral basket in the name of Kim Jong Un was placed at his tomb.
Kim Jong Un paid homage to Mao Anying.
He looked round the tombs of martyrs of the Chinese People's Volunteers together with the accompanying senior officials of the Party, the state and the armed forces.
Kim Jong Un impressively said 70 years has passed since the excellent sons and daughters of the fraternal Chinese people participated in the sacred Fatherland Liberation War of the Korean people, but the immortal exploits and heroic feats of the Chinese People's Volunteers who rendered self-sacrificing support and encouragement to us under the banner of resisting America and aiding Korea, protecting the home and defending the motherland even in the extremely difficult situation are vivid in the memory of the Korean people.
He continued: The Chinese People's Volunteers' entry into the Korean front made a historic contribution to the great victory of the Fatherland Liberation War. The great victory won by the armies and peoples of Korea and China at the cost of their blood, linking their destiny as one and sharing life and death, is of great significance invariably even now after the lapse of years and the change of the century.
The officers and men of the Chinese People's Volunteers fought heroically by devoting all their valuable youth and lives without fearing death in the sacred war against the imperialist aggressors. All places of Korea are permeated with their red blood. Our Party, government and people will never forget their lofty soul and noble self-sacrificing spirit, he added.

STORYLINE:
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited a cemetery in North Korea on Monday for Chinese soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.
Wen and his delegation inspected wreaths and visited graves at the site in Hoechang county, south of the North Korean capital.
He also visited the grave of Mao Anying, the first son Mao Zedong, who was killed in action during the Korean War.
Wen then met the North's deputy leader Kim Yong Nam in Pyongyang, where the two held talks.
Wen's three-day visit at the head of a high-level delegation is meant to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the neighbours, but will include meetings with the North's leader Kim Jong Il who on on Sunday staged a lavish reception for the Chinese.
Western analysts are watching for signs that Wen's visit might lead to Pyongyang returning to nuclear disarmament talks after conducting a nuclear test in April.
On Sunday, Kim greeted Wen personally at the city's airport embracing him on a red carpet and standing beside him as a military band played their country's respective national anthems.
Wen was then driven into the tightly controlled capital in an open-topped car as residents lining the streets danced, waved bunches of flowers, and shouted greetings in unison.
The lavish welcome was a rare honour for a non-head of state, underscoring the importance the North places on its communist neighbours and offering a strong indication that it is planning to re-engage its negotiating partners after boycotting talks while threatening nuclear war and conducting nuclear and missile tests.
Although Wen's three-day visit is officially being held to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations, analysts say they doubt he would have agreed to the trip without assurances of new talks.
Kim has reportedly expressed a willingness to engage in "bilateral and multilateral talks," although it's unclear if that indicates a willingness to rejoin stalled six-nation disarmament talks that also involve the US, Japan, South Korea and Russia.
China hosts the talks and continues to promote them as the best forum for dealing with the issue.
Pyongyang, however, is believed to favour direct negotiations with the United States.
During his visit, Wen is overseeing a series of agreements on trade and other bilateral issues, will meet with top leaders, and attend events commemorating historical ties.
Under the six-nation framework, North Korea pledged in September 2005 to dismantle its nuclear programs in exchange for pledges of energy assistance and diplomatic concessions.
Progress has been bumpy, and North Korea walked away from the talks in April to protest world criticism of a rocket launch.
In May, it further escalated tensions by conducting a nuclear test, drawing a rebuke from Beijing and sanctions from the United Nations.

(19 Nov 2017) China's presidential envoy visited traditional sites in North Korea on Sunday to emphasize the shared history between the neighbouring countries.
Song Tao, head of the Chinese Communist Party's International Department, first went to a tower in Pyongyang that commemorates Chinese soldiers who fought with North Korea during the Korean War.
He and his group then drove out of town to another landmark related to China's participation in the Korean War - North Korea calls it a Martyr's Cemetery, and Chinese authorities usually refer to it as the Chinese People's Volunteers Cemetery.
The cemetery includes a bust of Mao Anying, son of Chinese leader Mao Zedong, who died during the Korean War.
After visiting the cemetery, Song Tao went on to the nearby tunnel complex which was the headquarters of the Chinese army during the Korean War.
It is not known whether Song Tao met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Song Tao's predecessor, Wang Jiarui, met Kim Jong Un, as well as North Korea's previous leader, Kim Jong Il.
Song Tao is expected to leave Pyongyang on Monday.

The guard of honor of the Korean People's Army (KPA) lined up at the Cemetery of the Martyrs of the Chinese People's Volunteers.
As Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un arrived before the monument to the CPV martyrs with the officials of the Party, the government and the military, the national anthems of the two countries were solemnly played.
Amid the playing of the wreath-laying music, a floral basket in the name of the Supreme Leader of our Party, state and armed forces and floral baskets in the names of the Central Committee of the WPK, the Central Military Commission of the WPK, the DPRK State Affairs Commission, the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, the Cabinet of the DPRK and the Korean People's Army were laid at the monument to the CPV martyrs.

Then, he visited the grave of Mao Anying in the cemetery.
A floral basket in the name of Kim Jong Un was placed before the grave of Mao Anying.
Written on the ribbon of the floral basket were letters "To Martyr Mao Anying!"
He paid a tribute to Mao Anying.
He made a round of the cemetery together with leading officials of the Party, state and armed forces.
He said with deep emotion that even though 70 years have passed since the excellent sons and daughters of the fraternal Chinese people made an entry into the sacred Fatherland Liberation War fought by the Korean people, the immortal exploits and heroic feats made by the CPV by sacrificially supporting us under the banner of resisting America and aiding Korea, safeguarding the home and defending the motherland despite the very difficult situation remain vividly in the memory of our people.
Saying that the entry of the CPV into the Korean front was a historic contribution to the great victory in the Fatherland Liberation War, he noted that the great victory won by the armies and peoples of the DPRK and China while linking their destiny as one and sharing weal and woe with each other is, indeed, of great significance no matter how much water may flow under the bridge.
Saying that every part of our country is closely associated with the red blood shed by the service personnel of the Chinese People's Volunteers who bravely fought in the sacred war against the imperialist aggressors, not being afraid of death, and dedicating their invaluable youth and lives to it, he stressed that our Party, government and people would never forget their noble soul and lofty self-sacrificing spirit forever.
