Schnittke - Variations on a Chord
Variations on a Chord (1965) According to Alexander Ivashkin: "Elements of polystylism can be heard in the Variations on a Chord which were written for Irina Schnittke, the composer's wife; it was she who gave the first performance of them in Moscow in June 1966. The main structural idea of the work was borrowed from the second movement of Webern's Piano Variations, Op. 27; each note of the row can be used only in the same octave that was selected at the start. At the same time the idea of contrasting, almost polystylistic, variations belong to Schnittke. The six variations are different in character. Sometimes they recall the ringing of bells (variation IV, Lento), a toccata in a Prokofiev-like style (variation III, Agitato), the impressionistic writing of Debussy (at the start of the piece), or the 'melodic cells' technique of Stravinsky in the spirit of his Les noces (variation II, Andante)."

Arvo Pärt - Annum per Annum
Annum per annum, for organ (1980) I. Einleitung II. K(yrie) III. G(loria) IV. C(redo) V. S(anctus) VI. A(gnus) VII. Coda Andrew Lucas, organ After experiments with functional harmony, serialism, and polystylism, Arvo Pärt spent several years intently studying the music of the medieval and renaissance. As a result, some of his pieces demonstrate an aesthetic of all-encompassing unity and control that one could immediately associate with, if not attribute to, musical processes from centuries earlier. In the Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten (1977) and Festina Lente (1988), Pärt constructs large-scale mensuration canons a la Ockeghem's Missa Prolationem; the constant parallel fourth melodic motion in Fratres recalls the early days of organum. The very title of Annum per annum (year by year) evokes the passage of large expanses time, and the perhaps the unbroken rites and traditions that string the years together. In fact, the work--one of only a handful for organ by the composer--was commissioned in 1980 to celebrate the 900th year in which daily masses were given at the Speier Cathedral. Dedicated to St. Cecilia, the traditional patron saint of music, Annum per Annum bases its five-part structure on the ordinary of the mass: the lone letters KGCSA that mark each section correspond to the mass movements (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei.). This structure is spanned by several symmetries. For example, the introduction that precedes the K is reversed in the coda ...

Tania León was born and raised in Cuba but her ancestry spans Europe, Africa, and Asia as well as the Americas. She arrived in the United States in 1967. In the music she has been composing for the past four decades, she has absorbed all of these influences and transformed them into a vibrant synergistic totality that foreshadows the omnivorous polystylism of the early 21st century. More than 35 years separate Haiku (1973) and Inura (2009), and they conjure up wildly different sonic universes. Haiku, created during León's tenure as composer-in-residence and music director for the Dance Theatre of Harlem, is an aphoristic and almost otherworldly re-imagining of seventeen classical Japanese haiku poems, which somehow form a cohesive and unified whole. The holistic approach León took with Haiku would however be anathema for Inura, a celebration of contradictions created for DanceBrazil that is inspired by Candomblé. Barbara Benary: Mother of Lion
While the passage of time has seen Gamelan Son of Lion founder Barbara Benary's compositional aesthetics evolve from post-Cagean conceptualism to minimalism to an eclectic polystylism, she comes to everything she does in music with the generosity of a great parent. "Delta" by Aaron Krerowicz; for double bass, guitar, harp, and electronics
"We live in a time I think not of mainstream, but of many streams, or even if you insist upon a river of time, that we have come to delta, maybe even beyond delta to an ocean which is going back to the skies." John Cage (1992) While I certainly and thoroughly appreciate Cage's quote for its metaphorical meaning, Delta uses it as a literal portrayal. Rather than showcasing this multi-stream polystylism, it illustrates a literal stream by musically depicting the water cycle: beginning as atmospheric condensation, through precipitation and runoff, and eventually flowing through a delta into the ocean before evaporating to start all over again. Ian Clarke - Zoom Tube: Nick Goodwin, flutist
July 27th, 2012 Henry Holt Barn - The Robert Frost House - Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire New compositions are necessarily, consciously or sub-consciously, influenced by other work. In the case of Zoom Tube there are many inspirations: rhythm & blues, Bobby McFerrin, Stockhausen, Robert Dick, Ian Anderson & South American flute playing spring to mind fairly immediately. Beyond this I had an impression of what I wanted to achieve and, since I am a composer & flautist, naturally enough its birth was largely through experimentation and improvisation on the instrument. The extended techniques and hence palette of colours was very much a means to an end, rather than just an end in itself. Amongst other things I wanted the flute to groove, much as a rhythm guitarist might. When the human voice is used to groove and array of percussive vocalizations are employed to imitate a drum kit or used as interjections to further rhythmic suggestion. In the end I hope I have achieved something new and exciting for the flautist that will surprise and inspire! ~Ian Clarke

Vlad: - Our spectrum of possibilities is so wide so it's hard to say what we're not playing, starting from folk traditions, classic - to the blues, jazz and free avant-garde... King B.: - Today we proved that we are doing that quite successfully. Inga: - What You'll say?
