Lansdale is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Early in the 20th century, its industries included agricultural implement works, a canning factory, foundries, brickyards, a silk mill, and manufacturers of cigars, stoves, shirts, rope, iron drain pipe, and glue. In 1900, 2,754 people lived here; in 1910, 3,551; and in 1940, 9,316 people were inhabitants of Lansdale. The population was 16,269 at the time of the 2010 census.

Geography

Lansdale is located at (40.241956, -75.284083).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.1 square miles (7.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the borough was 75.9% White, 5.9% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 13.3% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, and 2.7% were two or more races. 5.0% of the population were of Hispanic or Latino ancestry.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16,071 people, 6,620 households, and 4,051 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,245.8 people per square mile (2,027.8/km²). There were 6,893 housing units at an average density of 2,250.0 per square mile (869.7/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 85.40% White, 3.94% African American, 0.09% Native American, 7.98% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.90% of the population.

There were 6,620 households out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 10.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 32.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the borough the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $46,232, and the median income for a family was $54,891. Males had a median income of $40,009 versus $29,825 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $22,096. About 4.1% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.4% of those under age 18 and 6.5% of those age 65 or over.

Politics and government

Lansdale has a city manager form of government with a mayor and a nine-member borough council. On Wednesday June 4, 2008, local chiropractor G. Andrew Szekely was appointed by council resolution to serve the remaining 18 months of the term of Mayor Michael DiNunzio. Szekely won a full four-year term in November 2009.

The borough is part of the Thirteenth Congressional District (represented by Rep. Allyson Schwartz), Pennsylvania's 53rd Representative District (represented by Rep. Robert Godshall) and the 24th State Senate District (represented by Sen. Bob Mensch).

K-6 public elementary schools in Lansdale include Gwynedd Square Elementary, Knapp Elementary, Oak Park Elementary, Walton Farm Elementary, and York Avenue Elementary. St. Stanislaus School is a Catholic K-8 school. Calvary Baptist School is a pre-K-12th grade Christian school.Penndale Middle School serves grades 7-9. Lansdale area high schools include Lansdale Catholic High School, Christopher Dock Mennonite High School, and North Penn High School. The latter two high schools are located outside Lansdale Borough in neighboring Towamencin Township.

Culture

Lansdale is home to the Lansdale Center for the Performing Arts, which opened its inaugural season on September 25, 2009 with a performance by the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. The first phase of the center is a 240-seat chamber music hall. The reception area also serves as an art gallery. A second phase is planned, which would include a second hall that would be twice as large as the existing hall. The center is located in the building that once served as Lansdale's Masonic Temple.

An episode of the Fox television series Fringe, which aired on September 24, 2009, was set in Lansdale. The scenes that took place in Lansdale were filmed in British Columbia, and the town was depicted as a rural area consisting primarily of corn fields and not as the densely populated suburban town that it actually is.

In the 1981 novel ''A Natural Weapon'' by Garry Mitchelmore, Lansdale is one of two towns (the other being Cache, Louisiana) that has its natural gas supply poisoned by terrorists.

Lansdale is served by The Reporter, a broadsheet daily newspaper. It was a Gannett Company newspaper from 1980 until 2001 when it was sold to the Journal Register Company. The 16,364-circulation newspaper has a 33% penetration of households in Lansdale, Hatfield, and Souderton, and 29% penetration of Harleysville.

Kugel ball

Lansdale is home to a Kugel ball, which is a dark grey granite sphere supported by a very thin film of water pumped from beneath its base. The Kugel Ball is located in Railroad Plaza, adjacent to the SEPTA Lansdale/Doylestown Line train station in downtown Lansdale. The plaza consists of a bricked patio with benches centered around the Kugel Ball and closes at 11:00 pm.

History

Lansdale was named for Phillip Lansdale Fox, chief surveyor of the North Penn Railroad. By the naming conventions of the time, it should have been called Jenkintown, since the land immediately surrounding the train station was owned by the Jenkins family, but there was already a town by that name along the rail line.

Del Howison (born June 3, 1953) is an American horror author, editor and actor.

Life and career

Howison was born in Detroit, Michigan but moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting; with his distinctive long white hair, he was a natural for low-budget horror films, and has since played the character "Renfield" on four separate occasions (making him the actor who has portrayed this iconic character from Dracula more than any other).

In 1995, Howison and wife Sue Duncan started Dark Delicacies, a store devoted entirely to horror books, DVDs and gifts. Dark Delicacies, located in Burbank, California, remains the only "brick-and-mortar" store in the United States dedicated solely to horror. The store has also published a number of charity anthologies, including ''The Altruistic Alphabet'' and ''Conjuring Dark Delicacies'' (a horror-themed cookbook).

In 2005, Howison and co-editor Jeff Gelb published ''Dark Delicacies: Original Tales of Terror and the Macabre'' (Carroll and Graf), which included stories by Ray Bradbury, Clive Barker, F. Paul Wilson, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, David J. Schow, Steve Niles, Roberta Lannes, Gahan Wilson, and more. The book went on to win the 2005 Bram Stoker Award for Best Anthology.

In 2007, Howison and co-editor Jeff Gelb published ''Dark Delicacies II: Fear'' (Carroll and Graf). In 2008 it was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award and a Shirley Jackson Award for Best Anthology.

Howison also co-edited ''The Book of Lists: Horror'' with Amy Wallace and Scott Bradley which was released in September 2008 by Harper Collins

Howison has also written a number of non-fiction horror articles and interviews for such publications as ''Gauntlet'' and ''Rue Morgue'' magazine.

In 2008 his short story ''The Lost Herd'' (originally published in the erotic horror anthology ''Hot Blood 12: Strange Bedfellows'' 2004) was purchased for the television series ''Fear Itself''. It was scripted by Mick Garris and the title changed to ''Red Snow''. The title was once again changed to ''The Sacrifice'' and it was directed by Breck Eisner. The episode became the series premiere episode airing on June 5, 2008. His short story ''The Necrosis Factor'' was chosen for the anthology ''Traps'' which was released in December 2008.

In 2010 he co-authored the book "Vampires Don't Slepp Alone" with Elizabeth Barrial under the pseudonym of D. H. Altair. That year he also released the book "When Werewolves Attack" under his own name. Both books were published by Ulysses Press

Joe R. Lansdale (born October 28, 1951) is an American author and martial-arts expert. He has written novels and stories in many genres, including Western, horror, science fiction, mystery, and suspense. He has also written for comics as well as ''Batman: The Animated Series''.

Frequent features of Lansdale's writing are usually deeply ironic, strange or absurd situations or characters, such as Elvis and JFK battling a soul-sucking Ancient Egyptian mummy in a nursing home (the plot of his Bram Stoker Award-nominated novella, "Bubba Ho-Tep," which was made into a movie by Don Coscarelli). He is the winner of the British Fantasy Award, the American Horror Award, the Edgar Award, and eight Bram Stoker Awards. The World Horror Convention recently made him the recipient of the 2007 Grand Master Award for contributions to the field of Horror fiction.

He is perhaps best known for his ''"Hap and Leonard"'' series of novels which feature two friends, Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, who live in the town of Laborde, Texas and find themselves solving a variety of often unpleasant crimes. The characters themselves are an unlikely pairing; Hap is a white working class laborer in his mid forties, and Leonard is a gay black man. Both of them are accomplished fighters, and the stories (told from Hap's narrative point of view) feature a great deal of violence, profanity and sex. Lansdale paints a picture of East Texas which is essentially "good" but blighted by racism, ignorance, urban and rural deprivation and corruption in public officials. Some of the subject matter is extremely dark, and has included pedophilia and anti-gay violence. The novels are characterised by sharp humour and "wisecracking" dialogue.

Lansdale, who was born in Gladewater, Texas, now lives in Nacogdoches and is the writer in residence at Stephen F. Austin State University. He also teaches at his own Shen Chuan martial arts school and is a member of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Film and television

Lansdale was a contributing writer for ''Batman: the Animated Series'', credited with three episodes:

"Perchance to Dream" (season 1, episode 26, aired October 29, 1992), in which the Mad Hatter creates a world where Thomas and Martha Wayne never died;

"Read My Lips" (season 1, episode #59, aired May 10, 1993), which introduced The Ventriloquist to the show

"Showdown" (season 4, episode 2, aired Sept 12, 1995) (featuring Jonah Hex and Ra's al Ghul) (sometimes cited as season 3, episode 12).

He also wrote "Identity Crisis", the episode which introduced Bizarro on ''Superman: The Animated Series'' (season 2, episode #6, aired September 15, 1997), and ''Critters'' (with Steve Gerber) for ''The New Batman Adventures'' (sometimes referred to as ''Batman: Gotham Knights'', as on Lansdale's website; in syndication, the series is just more episodes of ''Batman: The Animated Series'' - season 2, episode #2, aired September 19, 1998).

In 2010 he wrote the screenplay for the animated short DC Showcase: Jonah Hex. The brief standalone story features Hex tracking a bounty only to encounter a new adversary.

The most famous Lansdale adaptation was made in 2002 when Don Coscarelli adapted the novella ''Bubba Ho-Tep'' for the big screen. The film featured persons who believe themselves to be Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy, confined to an old-age rest home, teaming up to fight a mummy who is stealing their friends' souls.

The short story "Incident On and Off a Mountain Road" was adapted for the first episode of the first season of Masters of Horror, also by Don Coscarelli. It aired on October 28, 2005. The short story "The Fat Man", has also been written into a screenplay by Neal Barrett Jr. for ''Masters of Horror'', but it is as yet unproduced.

Lansdale's story "The Job" was made into an eleven minute short in 1997 by A.W. Feidler. It is available on the out-of-print DVD collection, Short 5 - Diversity, on Warner Home Video. The short story "Drive-In Date" was filmed as a short by James Cahill, from a script written by Lansdale, published in ''A Fist Full of Stories''.

It has also been announced that Lansdale's 2002 novel ''A Fine Dark Line'' will be made into a movie, which will be directed by Adam Friedman, with a screenplay written by Lansdale "hisownself."

A movie version of Lansdale's ''Cold in July'', directed by Jim Mickle and written by Nick Damici, is in the works.

The movie ''Christmas With The Dead'', based on the Lansdale short story of the same name, will be filmed in East Texas in Summer 2011.

Awards

Joe Lansdale has won eight Bram Stoker Awards over the course of his long career. The short story "Night They Missed the Horror Show" won the award for "Short Fiction" in 1988. In the "Long Fiction" category (which is for novellas, though it also initially included comic book work as well), he won in 1989 for "On the Far Side of the Cadillac Desert with Dead Folks", 1997 for "The Big Blow", and 1999 for "Mad Dog Summer" (a shared award with Brian A. Hopkins' "Five Days in April"). In 1992 the story "The Events Concerning a Nude Fold-Out Found in a Harlequin Romance" shared the "Long Fiction" award with "Aliens: Tribes" by Steve Bissette. In 1993, ''Jonah Hex: Two Gun Mojo'' won in the newly created "Other Media" category. Lansdale's anthology "Retro Pulp Tales" won for the "Anthology" category.

He was also nominated nine other times. ''The Drive-In'' and ''Savage Season'' were nominated in the "Novels" category in 1988 and 1990, respectively. ''By Bizarre Hands'' and ''Writer of the Purple Rage'' were nominated for "Fiction Collection" in 1989 and 1994. The short story "Love Doll: A Fable" was up in "Short Fiction" in 1991. Miranda Leigh Lambert (born November 10, 1983) is an American country music artist who gained fame as a finalist on the 2003 season of ''Nashville Star'', where she finished in third place and later signed to Epic Records. Lambert made her debut with the release of "Me and Charlie Talking", the first single from her 2005 debut album ''Kerosene''. This album, which was certified Platinum in the United States, also produced the singles "Bring Me Down", "Kerosene", and "New Strings". All four singles were Top 40 hits on the ''Billboard'' Hot Country Songs charts.

After Epic's Nashville division closed, Lambert was transferred to Columbia Records Nashville for her second album, ''Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'', which was released in early 2007. Although the title track failed to make top 40, the next three singles ("Famous in a Small Town", "Gunpowder & Lead", and "More Like Her") were all Top 20 hits, with "Gunpowder & Lead" becoming her first Top 10 country hit in July 2008. Lambert's third album, ''Revolution'', was released in September 2009. Five singles have been released from the album, including Lambert's two Number One hits "The House That Built Me," which spent four weeks at the top of the chart, and "Heart Like Mine". Lambert has also been honored by the Grammy Awards, the Academy of Country Music Awards, and the Country Music Association Awards.

In 2011, Lambert married fellow country singer Blake Shelton. She also released "Baggage Claim", the first single from her upcoming fourth album ''Four the Record'', and collaborated with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Pressley in the side project Pistol Annies.

Early life

Miranda Leigh Lambert was born November 10, 1983 in Longview, Texas and raised in Lindale, Texas. Her father, Richard Lee "Rick" Lambert, is a retired police officer who in later life became a private investigator in partnership with her mother, Beverly June Lambert (née Hughes). Miranda was taught about guns by her father at an early age and later became an avid deer hunter. Her parents took her to a Garth Brooks concert when she was nine and this started her interest in country music. Her father wrote and performed country music and she soon began singing in talent contests under his tutelage. She started her career playing in local restaurants.

At age sixteen, Lambert began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Lambert quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music. She then went back to Texas and asked her dad to teach her how to play guitar so she could write her own songs.

While still in high school, Lambert made her professional singing debut. She fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, and is where Brooks & Dunn started out as a bar room band.

Music career

2003-2006: ''Kerosene''

In 2003, Lambert auditioned for the talent competition ''Nashville Star'', eventually becoming a third-place finisher on the show. She performed in many places such as The Tap in College Station, Texas when she was 18. On September 15, 2003, she signed with Epic Records. Her debut single, "Me and Charlie Talking" (co-written by her father and Heather Little), was released in summer of 2004 as the lead-off single to her debut album. Titled ''Kerosene'', Lambert's first album comprised twelve songs, eleven of which she co-wrote. The album debuted at number one on the ''Billboard'' Top Country Albums charts, and eventually gained a Platinum certification by the RIAA for shipments of over one million copies, selling more than 930,000 copies up to July 2008. Overall, the album produced four Top 40 singles on the ''Billboard'' country charts, including the title track which was a Top 20 hit. Lambert also toured with Keith Urban and George Strait in early 2006. In 2007, she toured with Dierks Bentley and Toby Keith.

2007-2008: ''Crazy Ex-Girlfriend''

Lambert's second album, ''Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'' was released on May 9, 2007. She wrote eight of the album's eleven tracks, including its four singles. Much of the track "Gunpowder & Lead," the album's third single and her highest-charting single, was written while she was taking a concealed handgun class in her home town.

In 2005, at the 40th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas, Lambert won the Cover Girl Fresh Face of Country Music Award. She was also nominated for the Country Music Association's Horizon Award in 2005; in 2007, Lambert also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her single "Kerosene". She also won the Top New Female Vocalist award at the 2007 ACM (Academy of Country Music) Awards. At the 2008 ACM (Academy of Country Music) Awards, ''Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'' won Album of the Year.

Lambert was ranked #90 on the ''100 Greatest Women'' (of Country Music) by Country Universe in 2008.

2009-2011: ''Revolution''

In February 2009, Miranda Lambert entered the studio to record her third album, ''Revolution'', which was to be released on September 29, 2009. Lambert co-wrote all but four of the album's 15 tracks; the album also includes co-writes from Blake Shelton, Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum. Ahead of the album's release, an EP, titled ''Dead Flowers'', was issued on September 8, 2009. The EP, available exclusively at Best Buy, featured the ''Revolution'' album track "Dead Flowers" and three bonus tracks previously included on limited editions of ''Crazy Ex-Girlfriend''.

During this time, Lambert (along with two other singers), became the new face of Cotton Inc.’s revived “The Touch, The Feel of Cotton” campaign. She has appeared in ads to promote cotton, and the website features a free download of the full version of her song, "Fabric of My Life."

Lambert debuted her new single, "Dead Flowers", at the 44th annual Academy of Country Music Awards on April 5, 2009. It was released to country radio on May 4, 2009, and was a minor Top 40 hit on the charts.

On September 24, 2009, Lambert and her band performed all the tracks on ''Revolution'' in sequence at the Ryman Auditorium, five days before its scheduled release date.

Upon the release of ''Revolution'', Lambert's work was met with significant critical praise. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 85, based on 11 reviews, which indicates "universal acclaim".

''Rolling Stone'' magazine praised the album saying, "Lambert remains country's most refreshing act, and not just because she makes firearms seem like a matter-of-fact female accessory." ''Entertainment Weekly'' magazine said, "She's found stylistic shades of songwriters twice her age..." and that the album is "...a portrait of an artist in full possession of her powers, and the best mainstream-country album so far this year." ''Boston Globe'' commented that “Revolution’’ is the sound of Miranda Lambert coming into her own." ''Slant magazine'' also had high praises reserved for the album saying, "Miranda Lambert expands on her fascinating, fully realized artistic persona on Revolution."

The album's second single, "White Liar", was released on August 17, 2009, and debuted at #50 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot Country Songs chart. In February 2010, "White Liar" became Lambert's first Top Five hit, reaching a peak of #2 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot Country Songs chart.

In promotion of ''Revolution'', Miranda Lambert launched a headlining tour; ''Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars'' kicked off in March 2010 and included stops in over 22 cities, as well as a performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival.

"The House That Built Me," the album's third single, was released on March 8, 2010 and became a #1 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot Country Songs chart. It retained this position for four weeks and it received a platinum certification from the RIAA on July 8, 2010. On February 13, 2011, Lambert won a Grammy Award in the ''Best Female Country Vocal Performance'' category for "The House That Built Me."

"Only Prettier" followed as the album's fourth single in July 2010 and its accompanying music video became somewhat viral. The music video for "Only Prettier" was directed by Trey Fanjoy and filmed in Joelton, Tennessee in June 2010, and premiered on VEVO on August 3, 2010. It features a 1950s theme and cameo appearances by fellow country artists Kellie Pickler, Laura Bell Bundy, and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum. In the video, Lambert and her friends portray two rival cliques attending a high school sock hop. The alter-egos are shown doing things such as spiking the punch, stuffing their bras and smoking. Ultimately, the alter-egos have a bad time at the party, while Lambert, Pickler, Bundy and Scott enjoy themselves the entire night. Additionally, Lambert is also shown performing with her band on stage at the event.

On September 1, 2010, it was announced Miranda led nominations with an impressive 9 CMA awards, setting a record for the female with the most nominations in a single year by the organization. Miranda performed at the 44th Annual Country Music Association Awards on November 10, 2010. That same night she won the CMA Award for Female Vocalist of the Year and ''Revolution'' won Album of the Year. Lambert and Sheryl Crow performed "Coal Miner's Daughter" as a tribute to country legend Loretta Lynn, who also entered the stage to join them and finished the song with Crow and Lambert as backup. Later that night, Lynn presented the Female Vocalist of the Year CMA award to Lambert.

In December 2010, "Only Prettier", eventually reached a peak of number 12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, giving Lambert her seventh Top 20 hit. "Heart Like Mine" was released in January 2011 as the fifth and final single from ''Revolution''. It became Lambert's second Number One hit on the country charts for the chart dated May 28, 2011.

2011-present: ''Four the Record'' and Pistol Annies

On April 4, 2011 during the taping of the Academy of Country Music's 'Girls' Night Out' television special in Las Vegas, Lambert debuted her new project, girl group Pistol Annies. The group consists of Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. They released their single, "Hell on Heels," in May 2011, and released their debut album, ''Hell on Heels'', on August 23, 2011.

Lambert announced in July 2011 that her fourth studio album, ''Four the Record'', will be released on November 1, 2011. A month later, Sony Music Nashville announced that Lambert and labelmate Josh Thompson will transfer to RCA Nashville as part of a corporate restructuring.

Personal life

In 2006, Lambert began dating fellow country singer Blake Shelton. Lambert sang background vocals on Shelton's 2008 country cover of Michael Bublé's song "Home". The two recorded and co-wrote duet "Bare Skin Rug," for his studio album ''Startin' Fires'' released later in 2008. Shelton also co-wrote three songs on ''Revolution,'' and provided background vocals on "Maintain the Pain." On May 9, 2010, Shelton proposed to Lambert, after seeking (and receiving) her father's blessing and they became engaged. The two married on May 14, 2011 at Don Strange Ranch in Boerne, Texas. Wearing her mother's wedding dress, Miranda walked down the aisle and exchanged vows with Blake in front of 550 family members and friends, including fellow celebrities Reba McEntire, Kelly Clarkson, Cee Lo Green, Martina McBride, Dierks Bentley, Charles Kelley, and the Bellamy Brothers. After the ceremony, Miranda expressed her excitement saying, "I'm married to my best friend! Looking forward to a lifetime of laughter."
