Christened 'Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter' in 2002 (based in Seattle, WA.), singer-songwriter Jesse Sykes and guitarist Phil Wandscher (who co-founded Whiskeytown along side Ryan Adams), began what has become their long lived musical partnership.
Though oft-saddled with the “alt-country” tag, of late Sykes and Co. are moving into some heavier, darker territories. In fact “The Sinking Belle”, Sykes’ contribution to the Sunn O))) / Boris collaboration "Altar", has already become an underground classic among followers of the unlikely art-metal movement centered around the Southern Lord label. (Jesse sang and wrote the lyrics and melody of 'The Sinking Belle'). The band has toured with Earth, a group commonly acknowledged as one of the major progenitors of Drone Doom (and another member of the Southern Lord roster) and psych-rock maestros Black Mountain.
Sykes and her bandmates are a group of musicians whose music resonates, against all standards of modern musical genrefication, in the parallel worlds of the avant-garde and the timeless. Sykes’ voice and the sometimes-mystical leanings of her songs (the former described perfectly by Magnet as “sounding less like a performer and more like a sage”), and the band’s incomparable feel all lead to what the New York Times has described as “spellbound music, rapt in fatalism and sorrow.” Perhaps it’s this thematic darkness that has lately drawn attention to their music from a decidedly heavier crowd than in the past.
Fun facts: Their music has appeared in the films '12 and Holding' (2005), 'First Snow' (2006) and 'Eldorado' (2009); As well as in an episode of True Blood (season 1) (2008), on HBO.

Dr Bill Sykes (born 3 October 1948) became the Nationals Member for Benalla in November 2002 after a career as a veterinarian and businessman.
Sykes was also a VFL footballer, playing 48 games of football for Fitzroy, and later coaching Shepparton, Benalla and Benalla & District Junior Football teams. As well as being a member of parliament, Sykes and his wife Sally also run a beef cattle and sheep property just out of Benalla.
Together, the Sykes have been involved in a wide range of community activities including school councils, youth groups, sporting clubs, Landcare, fire brigade and the Victorian Farmers Federation. Sykes was also instrumental in the establishment of the Benalla Trust Foundation, a trust to assist local people in times of crisis, and the Benalla Young Sportspersons Trust, a trust that assists promising young athletes to compete in interstate and overseas competitions.
Benalla had been held by the Nationals since 1943 but was lost in a by-election in 2000 after the retirement of Pat McNamara. The Labor Party was re-elected in a landslide in the 2002 election, yet Sykes won Benalla back with only 26% of the primary vote to give a 52% two party preferred vote over the incumbent, Denise Allen.
In the 2006 election, Sykes increased his primary vote to 42% and his two party preferred vote to 68%.
Bill Sykes is currently the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture & Water. He is also a member of the Victorian Parliament's Public Accounts & Estimates Committee.

Jill Whelan (born September 29, 1966) is an American actress.
Whelan was born in Oakland, California. After attending summer acting camp at age 7, Whelan landed a series of commercials. At age 11, she was cast in the short-lived TV series ''Friends'' (a little-known 1979 series). Later that year, Whelan played the role of Lisa Davis, the sick girl, in ''Airplane!'' She is probably best known for her role in the hit television series ''The Love Boat.'' In the series she played Vicki Stubing, the daughter of Capt. Stubing (played by Gavin MacLeod). After the show was canceled in 1986, she worked on an album titled ''Our Time''.
During the early 1980s, Whelan served as a national spokesperson for First Lady Nancy Reagan's Just Say No anti-drug campaign.
Whelan graduated from the The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California and continued on to college in England at Guildford College.
After returning to the United States, Whelan moved to New York City and acted in several Off-Broadway productions before leaving the stage to work as an event producer at Madison Square Garden. It was here that she met her second husband whom she would marry over a decade later.
Shortly after leaving MSG, Whelan met her first husband Brad St. John and was married, becoming pregnant soon thereafter. Moving back to her native California in preparation for the birth of her first son Harrison, Whelan soon accepted another acting role on the long-running TV soap opera ''The Young and the Restless.'' She then left acting and started working as an investigative producer at LA's KCOP television station where she remained for 4 years before moving back to the east coast to get married again.
She married Michael Chaykowsky in April 2004 aboard the cruise ship ''Caribbean Princess.'' It was her second marriage. Her second son, Grant, was born on July 1, 2006.
She lives in Yardley, Pennsylvania and hosts a Sunday afternoon radio show on WPHT 1210AM in Philadelphia. The show airs Sunday from 3 pm-4 pm EST. Additionally, Jill teaches acting to children and teens.
On Friday September 10, 2008 Whelan appeared with several other castmembers from the movie ''Airplane!'' in a reunion segment on NBC's the Today Show.
