NY1, New York One, is a 24-hour cable-news television channel focusing on the five boroughs of New York City. In addition to news and weather forecasts, the channel also features human-interest segments such as the "New Yorker of the Week" and the "Scholar Athlete of the Week", and specialty programs such as Inside City Hall (which is renamed Road to City Hall during New York City mayoral elections).

NY1 is owned and operated by Time Warner Cable (TWC).

On the TWC-New York City service, NY1 appears on channel 1, formerly in standard definition (with a 4:3 aspect ratio), and is now shown on both channel 1 and channel 701 in high definition (with a 16:9 aspect ratio). The channel appears on channel 8 on Cablevision's New York City service (in mid December 2010 it was moved to Channel 8 with Channel 1 stricken from the Cablevision program guide) in letterboxed standard definition (using the HD feed). It is available to over two million cable-television customers within the five boroughs of New York City; nearby Bergen County, New Jersey; Mount Vernon in Westchester County, New York. Outside of the New York City metro area, NY1 is seen on Time Warner Cable systems throughout New York State, and to HDTV subscribers on Bright House Networks systems in the Orlando and Tampa Bay areas.^[1] Verizon FiOS does not carry the station.^[2]

History[link]

NY1 was conceived by Richard Aurelio, the president of Time Warner Cable's New York City cable group. The station launched September 8, 1992, from its newsroom in the National Video Center at 460 West 42nd Street in the Manhattan borough of New York City under the guidance of Paul Sagan, NY1's vice president of news, and Steve Paulus, NY1's news director. Construction of the 42nd Street facility was completed on July 15, but the channel's newly hired reporters actually began work a month earlier by attending a videojournalism "boot camp".^[3] While some of the reporters had used their own cameras in other markets, most had had no exposure to the technical side of journalism. Following their training, the reporters and the rest of the staff took part in an additional two-month training period that included four weeks of real-time rehearsal. A watershed event came in the final weeks of training, with the collapse of a former post-office building on Manhattan's West Side. Although the channel was not yet on the air, NY1 reporters covered the story as if the channel was fully operational, interviewing survivors and witnesses and reporting the story more fully^{[citation needed]} than competing television outlets.^[4]

Following the September 11, 2001, attacks of the World Trade Center in New York City, NY1's signal was temporarily broadcast internationally to all subscribers of the Oxygen cable-television channel after Oxygen could not broadcast from its studios in the Battery Park City Manhattan neighborhood near the World Trade Center.^[5]

In 2001, TWC began offering NY1 to digital-cable subscribers in the Albany, New York, market,^{[clarification needed]} with other markets following soon thereafter.

In January 2002, the station moved to a new, all-digital facility on the sixth foor at Chelsea Market, 75 Ninth Avenue (between West 15th-16th Streets) in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.

On June 30, 2003, NY1 Noticias, a Spanish-language version of the channel, began operating for digital-cable subscribers.

In late 2005, NY1 launched a video-on-demand service for its TWC customers. NY1 on Demand is on Channel 1110 in the TWC-New York City system.

In 2008, NY1 launched a high-definition channel on Channel 701, although it was aired only in a pillarbox format (i.e., 4:3 aspect ratio picture with side pillars of NY1 logo) until migrating to a full 16:9 aspect ratio in October 2009.^{[citation needed]}

NY1 as prototype for other TWC markets[link]

NY1 was the first TWC local-news channel, and TWC has since added twenty-four-hour local news networks in several other markets modeled after NY1, including:

Format[link]

The most-common "program" on NY1 is a half-hour block beginning at the top and middle of every hour. The first minute contains top headlines followed by "Weather On The 1s", a brief one-minute weather summary. The remainder of the half-hour is filled with pre-recorded news segments heavily focusing on stories from the New York metropolitan area. Nearly all stories are pre-recorded, even segments made to look like they are happening live; instead of a "live" indicator while reporters speak, most NY1 stories have a graphic saying merely that the reporter is (or, rather, was) "on scene". This is because when the report first aired, it may have been live but is usually not once re-aired, unless it updates breaking news. Moreover, reporters generally shoot their own stories with video-camera, and take them back to the newsroom to be edited into the broadcast rotation.^{[clarification needed]}

Sports reports are featured throughout the day, while a one-hour call-in sports show, Sports on 1: The Last Word, is featured every night at 11:35 p.m.

In an effort to compete with local late-night newscasts, on January 22, 2007, NY1 introduced its own 11 p.m. newscast, News At 11.^{[clarification needed]} The newscast is anchored by Lewis Dodley and former CBS news correspondent Elizabeth Kaledin, an original member of the NY1 News team.

Launched in July 2005, The Call is a live, one hour call-in and write-in news show hosted by John Schiumo. Throughout the day, viewers are encouraged to vote on the top news stories of the day, and after receiving an e-mail alert as to the top story, asked to write or call in to discuss the topic with Schiumo. The program was expanded to one hour in January 2012 in response to viewer requests. Previously, the show was extended on days of major news events.

Very often at the beginning of the show, Schiumo will have a short interaction with Danielle Rondinone, the program's senior producer, during which they will both offer their opinions of the days news.

On Stage is a half-hour program reporting on theater. Its focus is primarily on the New York City theater scene but the show also reports on performances in the wider region. It is hosted by Donna Karger, with Patrick Pacheco conducting interviews. NY1 anchor Roma Torre, who has a background in theater, is the critic for the show. Outside critics David Cote of Time Out New York and David Sheward of Back Stage also contribute reviews. Frank DiLella conducts on-scene reporting.

Benjamin John "Ben" Whishaw^[1] (born 14 October 1980) is an English actor who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Whishaw is known for his breakthrough stage role as Hamlet, his roles in the television series Criminal Justice and The Hour and film roles including Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, I'm Not There and Brideshead Revisited. It has been announced that he will play the role of Q in the James Bond film Skyfall.

Early life[link]

Whishaw was born and brought up in Clifton, Bedfordshire, the son of Linda (née Hope), who works in cosmetics, and Jose Whishaw, who works in information technology.^[2] He has a twin brother, James, and was a member of the Bancroft Players Youth Theatre at Hitchin's Queen Mother Theatre. He attended Henlow Middle School and then Samuel Whitbread Community College in Clifton, Bedfordshire. During his time with the group, he first rose to prominence during collaborations with their offshoot theatre company, Big Spirit. He was involved in many productions – perhaps most notably, If This Is A Man (also performed as The Drowned & The Saved). This was a piece devised by the company based on the book of the same name by Primo Levi, a survivor of the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz. This harrowing and moving book was adapted into a physical theatre piece by the group and taken to the 1995 Edinburgh Festival where it garnered five-star reviews and great critical acclaim. Whishaw played the character of Levi in this and subsequent productions of the show.

Career[link]

As the lead in Trevor Nunn's 2004 young-cast production of Hamlet at the Old Vic, he received highly favourable reviews. The role was shared with Al Weaver in an unusual arrangement that saw Whishaw playing all nights except for Mondays and matinées. Whishaw was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Actor and the Ian Charleson Award. Nunn is reported to have made this arrangement due to the youth of the two actors playing the lead, to relieve some of the pressure on each. It was Whishaw, however, who featured most prominently in the marketing materials and in the majority of reviews.

Whishaw's film and TV credits include Layer Cake and Chris Morris's 2005 sitcom Nathan Barley, in which he played a character called Pingu. He was named 'Most Promising Newcomer' at the 2001 British Independent Film Awards (for My Brother Tom) and, in 2005, nominated as best actor in four award ceremonies for his Hamlet. He also played Keith Richards in the Brian Jones biopic Stoned. In the spring of 2005, Whishaw received lots of press for his turn as a drug dealer, acting alongside Robert Boulter and Fraser Ayres in Philip Ridley's highly controversial stage play Mercury Fur.

In Perfume, Whishaw plays Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a perfume maker whose craft turns deadly. The film was released in Germany in September 2006 and in the U.S. in December 2006. In the same year Whishaw worked on Pawel Pawlikowski's abandoned The Restraint of Beasts.^[3]

Whishaw appeared in I'm Not There in 2007 as one of the Bob Dylan reincarnations; in Criminal Justice, a Tiger Aspect series for the BBC, in 2008; a new adaptation of Brideshead Revisited; and ...some trace of her, an adaptation of The Idiot at the National Theatre.^[4]

At the end of 2009 he starred in Cock, a new play by Mike Bartlett at the Royal Court Theatre.^[5] In 2009 he also starred as the poet John Keats in the film Bright Star, which was written and directed by Jane Campion.

In February, 2010 Whishaw made a very successful off-broadway debut at MCC Theater in the US premiere of the awarding winning play The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell. The performance co-starred Hugh Dancy and Andrea Riseborough and was directed by Joe Mantello.

He played Ariel in Julie Taymor's recent film adaptation of The Tempest and is attached to work on the film Kill Your Darlings^[6] (in which he plays Lucien Carr)

Ben Whishaw's most recent project is The Hour a BBC Two drama series, written and created by award-winning screenwriter Abi Morgan.^[7]

Whishaw will appear in the 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall, in the role of Q ^[8]. He will be portraying a younger 'Q' than in previous films. Peter Burton and Desmond Llewelyn both received the role when they were in their forties, while Desmond Llewelyn and John Cleese played the role into their eighties and sixties, respectively. Coincidentally, the script for Whishaw's previous project, The Hour, has his character jokingly referring to a female colleague as Moneypenny on several occasions.

I don't see why that has to be something you discuss openly because you do something in the public eye. I have no understanding of why we turn actors into celebrities."^[9]

Andrea Louise Riseborough (born 27 October 1981) is an English actress.

Early life[link]

Riseborough grew up in Whitley Bay. In reference to The Long Walk To Finchley, she has described her parents as "working class Thatcherites".^[1]

At an early age, she appeared at the People's Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne, where she appeared in the play Riding England Sidesaddle by Christopher Goulding, playing Celia Fiennes. Riseborough spent her schooldays at the independent school, Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School on Tankerville Terrace in Jesmond. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2005.

Her sister Laura studies acting at the East 15 Acting School.

She appeared in the 2010 films Made in Dagenham and Mark Romanek's adaptation of Never Let Me Go. She starred in the US premiere of Alexi Kaye Campbell's award-winning The Pride at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in January 2010.^[2] The production was directed by Joe Mantello and co-starred Hugh Dancy and Ben Whishaw.

She appears in Rowan Joffe's new film adaptation of Brighton Rock alongside Helen Mirren and John Hurt. She worked with The Devil's Whore author Peter Flannery in his screenplay based on the life of James Miranda Barry with Michael Fassbender.^[3]

Riseborough played the role of Wallis Simpson in W.E., a film directed by Madonna. She will star alongside Michael Sheen and Iwan Rheon in Resistance, an adaptation of an Owen Sheers novel. The film is due for UK release on 25 November 2011.^[4]

She writes with her creative partner, the actor Tom Burke, and with Mike Leigh. Riseborough will star on the side of Alexander Skarsgård in the upcoming Thriller film Hidden^[5], the Low-budget film is directed by Matt and Ross Duffer. ^[6]

In 2009 she was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for playing the title character in Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley. She won the Royal Television Society Award and The Broadcasting Press Guild for her role in The Devil's Whore. In 2007 she won the Ian Charleson Award for her performances as Isabella in Measure For Measure and as the title character in Miss Julie both directed by Sir Peter Hall. She was nominated as London Newcomer of the year at the 2005 Theatre Goers Choice Awards for A Brief History of Helen of Troy at the Soho Theatre. In 2007 she was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in The Pride. Riseborough was a recipient of the Shooting Stars Award from the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival. Jennifer Mascia (born 1977 in Miami, USA) is the author of "Never Tell Our Business to Strangers" and a news assistant on the Metropolitan Desk of The New York Times.

Mascia is a graduate of City University of New York's Hunter College and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. ^[1]

In February 2010 Mascia published "Never Tell Our Business to Strangers," a memoir about her parents that centers around the discovery of her father's murder conviction.^[2]

The memoir is an expansion of a Modern Love column published in The New York Times in April 2007.^[3]

Armstrong Williams (born February 5, 1959) is an African American political commentator, author of a conservative newspaper column, and host of a daily radio show and a nationally syndicated TV program, called The Right Side with Armstrong Williams. From 2004 to 2007, he co-hosted a daily radio program with Sam Greenfield, broadcast on WWRL in New York City.^{[citation needed]}

A native of Marion, South Carolina, Williams was reared on the family’s tobacco farm with nine other siblings. He displayed an early gift for public speaking, winning a high school orating contest in 1976.^{[citation needed]} Graduating in 1981 from South Carolina State University, he received his B.A. in Political Science and English. He is a life member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

Williams, who has never married, often mentions his celibacy.^[1][2]

In 1997, Williams was sued for sexual harassment by Stephen Gregory, a former YMCA personal trainer whom Williams repeatedly promoted, eventually to executive producer of his show The Right Side.^[3][4][5] The case was settled out of court.^[6] In his book Blinded by the Right, journalist David Brock claimed that Williams made a pass at him in Williams' apartment.^[6]

An entrepreneur and third-generation Republican, Armstrong Williams was formerly vice president for governmental and international affairs public relations firm, B&C Associations. He also served as confidential assistant to the Chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas), presidential appointee to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, legislative assistant to the U.S. Representative Carroll Campbell (former governor of South Carolina) and legislative aide and advisor to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond.

In 1991, Williams began his radio career at WOL in Washington, D.C.. Four years later, in 1995, Williams' local show was syndicated by The Talk America Radio Network. In 1998, Williams united with The Salem Radio Network, which syndicated his national radio show to 26 of the top radio markets in the country. In 2002, he reunited with the Newark, New Jersey-based Talk America Radio Network.

From 2002 to 2005 Williams hosted On Point with Armstrong Williams, a monthly primetime television special that aired on cable network TV One. A joint venture among Comcast, Radio One, and Right Side Production, On Point with Armstrong Williams included guests such as former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

In 2003 he launched his own company, The Right Side Productions, which produces and syndicates his television program to media outlets including Sky Angel, The Liberty Channel, etc. jointly with Langer Broadcast Radio Network.^[7]

In 2004, Williams was appointed by President George W. Bush to the President’s Commission on White House Fellows. The Commission's responsibility is to select qualified candidates to serve as Fellows to Cabinet-rank offices.^{[citation needed]} Past fellows have included Cheney, Powell and Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. Williams has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR as a guest commentator. He joined the lineup at WWRL's "New York's Urban Talk" in March 2005 as co-host with Sam Greenfield on Drive Time Dialogue.^{[citation needed]}

In 2008, Williams began hosting a conservative talk show on XM Satellite Radio.

Williams is a National Board member of the Carson Scholars Fund, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charity that was founded in 1994 by Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson to recognize and reward students in grades 4-11 who strive for academic excellence (3.75 GPA or higher) and demonstrate a strong commitment to their community.^{[citation needed]}

"No Child Left Behind" controversy[link]

In January 2005, USA Today reported that documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act revealed that Williams had been paid $240,000 to promote the controversial No Child Left Behind Act. USA Today claimed Williams was hired "to promote the law on his nationally syndicated television show and to urge other black journalists to do the same".^[8]

As part of the agreement, Williams was required "to regularly comment on NCLB during the course of his broadcasts," and to interview Education Secretary Rod Paige for TV and radio spots that aired during the show in 2004".^[9] The contract with Williams was part of a $1 million contract between the U.S. Department of Education and the public relations company, Ketchum Inc.

Melanie Sloan from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington told USA Today that the contract may be illegal "because Congress has prohibited propaganda ... [A]nd it's propaganda". United States Representative George Miller (D-CA), a member of the House Education Committee, called the contract "a very questionable use of taxpayers' money" that is "probably illegal".^[10]

After the USA Today revelations, Tribune Media Services terminated its syndication agreement with Williams. In a statement to Editor & Publisher (not available on its website), TMS stated: "[A]ccepting compensation in any form from an entity that serves as a subject of his weekly newspaper columns creates, at the very least, the appearance of a conflict of interest. Under these circumstances, readers may well ask themselves if the views expressed in his columns are his own, or whether they have been purchased by a third party".^[11] Williams told the Associated Press "even though I'm not a journalist — I'm a commentator — I feel I should be held to the media ethics standard. My judgment was not the best. I wouldn't do it again, and I learned from it."^[12]

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said it was a matter for the Education Department. According to Associated Press the Department of Education stated that the deal was a "permissible use of taxpayer funds under legal government contracting procedures".^[12] McClellan remained noncommittal on whether White House staff knew of the deal with Williams. "I'm not sure that senior staff was consulted before this decision was made. I haven't heard anything to that effect", he said.^[13] Three days after the story broke, McClellan claimed he was unaware of the details of the contract and that specific questions should be directed to the Education Department. As to whether Williams should have disclosed the details of the contract in his columns and on-air appearances, McClellan would only concede that "those are all legitimate questions". Asked whether he would investigate whether other journalists were on the payroll of the administration, McClellan replied, "I'm not aware of any others that are under contract other than the one that's been reported on in the media."^{[citation needed]}

Following the revelations of the Williams contract with Ketchum, the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington announced that it had filed Freedom of Information requests with 22 agencies requesting copies of all contracts with public relation firms.^[14]

The USA Today revelations caused controversy within the PR industry as well. As soon as the story broke, Edelman Public Relations' CEO Richard Edelman posted a note on his personal blog criticizing Ketchum's deal with Williams. "This kind of pay for play public relations takes us back in time to the days of the press agent who would drop off the new record album and $10 to the deejay. It makes our industry's efforts to 'clean up' behavior in newly created PR markets such as China and Russia look decidedly ridiculous", he wrote.^[15] The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) issued a statement saying "the relationship should have been disclosed up front, no question".^[16]

On September 30, 2005, the Government Accountability Office released a report concluding that the payments to Williams were illegal on the part of the Department of Education because the government's role in the public relations effort was not disclosed.^[17]
