Room 222 was an American comedy-drama television series produced by 20th Century Fox Television that aired on ABC for 112 episodes from September 17, 1969, until January 11, 1974. The show was broadcast on Wednesday evenings at 8:30 (EST) for its first two seasons before settling into its best-remembered time slot of Friday evenings at 9, following The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family, and preceding The Odd Couple and Love, American Style.
In 1970 Room 222 earned Emmy Awards in three categories: Outstanding New Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Michael Constantine), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Karen Valentine).
Year 222 (CCXXII) was a common year starting on Tuesday (link will display the full calendar) of the Julian calendar. At the time, it was known as the Year of the Consulship of Antoninus and Severus (or, less frequently, year 975 Ab urbe condita). The denomination 222 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.
A room is any distinguishable space within a structure. Usually, a room is separated from other spaces or passageways by interior walls; moreover, it is separated from outdoor areas by an exterior wall, sometimes with a door. Historically the use of rooms dates at least to early Minoan cultures about 2200 BC, where excavations on Santorini, Greece at Akrotiri reveal clearly defined rooms within certain structures.
In early structures, diverse room types could be identified to include bedrooms, kitchens, bathing rooms, reception rooms, and other specialized uses. The aforementioned Akrotiri excavations reveal rooms sometimes built above other rooms connected by staircases, bathrooms with alabaster appliances such as washbasins, bathing tubs, and toilets, all connected to an elaborate twin plumbing systems of ceramic pipes for cold and hot water separately. Ancient Rome manifested very complex building forms with a variety of room types, including some of the earliest examples of rooms for indoor bathing. The Anasazi civilization also had an early complex development of room structures, probably the oldest in North America, while the Maya of Central America had very advanced room configurations as early as several hundred AD. By at least the early Han Dynasty in China (e.g. approximately 200 BC),comfort room complex multi-level building forms emerged, particularly for religious and public purposes; these designs featured many roomed structures and included vertical connections of rooms.
Karen Lynne Valentine (born May 25, 1947) is an American actress best known for her role as the idealistic schoolteacher Alice Johnson in the television series Room 222.
Valentine grew up in Sebastopol, California and won a spot representing California at the Miss Teenage America pageant, where she was awarded the Talent Award. Valentine was Miss Sonoma County and Top 10 at Miss California, state finals to Miss America. When Ed Sullivan saw her act (where she would comically dance in a flamboyant costume while lip-synching to Eydie Gormé's "Blame it on the Bossa Nova"), he was quoted as saying, "I want that girl on my show."
In 1966-1967, she started her television career as "The Resident Dream Girl" on The Dream Girl of 1967, replacing Beverly Adams from the first weekday broadcast opposite hosts Dick Stewart and Wink Martindale, and during that time she appeared on another Chuck Barris show, The Dating Game.
In 1969, Valentine won her breakthrough role as a new teacher on the ABC television series Room 222 with Lloyd Haynes and Michael Constantine. She was discovered by Gene Reynolds, the director of Room 222, who saw her lip-synching in rehearsal and saw that she was funny. She was nominated twice for an Emmy and once for a Golden Globe, winning an Emmy in 1970 for Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role.

(A hotel room)
good evening, maam
ELLEN
don't turn the bed yet
I'm not the maid
ELLEN
what do you want then?
they must have written the room number wrong
I am looking for someone named Christopher Scott
three-seventeen, oh I'm sorry... unless
well, you must be, of course, you're John's wife, are you not?
ELLEN
oh God, I see
it had to happen
you must be Kim
Chris went to find you
please come inside
no one will hurt you
I'm Chris's wife
my name is Ellen
(KIM doesn't move)
ELLEN
in a way, I am glad I am meeting you first
understand, you were only a name till tonight
I don't know how I'd feel if our roles were reversed
please won't you sit down
tell me you are lying
ELLEN
we've been married a year, I am sorry, it's true
he said he'd come to get me
ELLEN
he says he tried to reach you, but what could he do?
please tell me you're not married
you don't know, you can't know what I've done to be here
ELLEN
you don't know how he needed a new start
I feel walls in my heart
closing in
I can't breathe
I can't win
ELLEN
as for the child
you say it's Chris's
oh yes, Madame
my son is Chris's
I had a dream for my son to belong
and not live his life in the streets like a rat
ELLEN
we aren't rich, but we'll shoulder our load
Chris and I are totally together on that
then you must take Tam with you
ELLEN
take a child from his mother, impossible Kim
you will take Tam with you
then he'll get what I wanted for him
ELLEN
but Kim, your child needs you
Chris is married to me, we want kids of our own
Tam's chance lies with you now, not with me
BOTH
can't you see
it won't work
it can't be
if you're saying that because you've made him change his mind
Chris must go away and leave me and his son behind
if you're saying that because my husband has another wife
my child has no future, like the dust of life
he must come tonight to my place
tell me so to my face
(KIM exits)
ELLEN
I don't want this
I didn't come here
to meet a girl
who loves my husband
I came here to help, but what do I do?
now, after this, what do I . . .
