Rainier Scholars Cohort 6 Graduation Speech
Rainier Scholars Cohort 6 Graduation Speech
A phase of a long journey just ended! On September 5, 2008, forty-nine twelve and thirteen-year-old kids out of sixty highly selected students made it to the end of the 14-month academic phase of Rainier Scholars, the most demanding and rigorous phase of the program. This phase started on summer of 2007. The kids eventually made it to the best programs and schools in the area and in Canada. Another phase of the long journey has just started! The kids were asked to vote for a faculty member and a student to give a speech in their Rites of Passage Graduation Ceremony held at Campion Ballroom at Seattle University. Miss Johnson was the faculty member voted to give a speech. This student speaker got 40 out of 49 votes. Like about 18 other kids in Cohort VI, she received all four honor roll nominations for Summer I, Fall, Spring and Summer II. She was also consistently on the honors list at St. George School, her old school. She got accepted at Lakeside School on her 7th grade. She was selected for the McCoy-Livingston Scholarship for Servant Leaders for the 2008-2009 school year at Lakeside. Great job! Go Kiddo! Go Cohort VI! Go Rainier Scholars! Go St. George! Go Lakeside! Thank you Bob Hurlbut for creating the Rainier Scholars Program. Thank you Dr. Susan McCoy for the McCoy Livingston Scholarship Program for Servant Leaders. Thanks to all the supporters and believers! Grandpa Eduardo Co, its too bad you had to leave us too early. You would have been proud of your ...

For more pottery tips, visit lakesidepottery.com For more hand building tips, visit lakesidepottery.com Objective: To make an animal using "Pinch pot" method with minimal tools and equipment. Lakeside Pottery uses this project to provide instant gratification in the first class or two where it increases self confidence and interest to learn more about pottery. What is needed: 1) Clay 2) Pin tool 3) Slip Step by step: 1) Form two equal sized balls of clay, approximately 1/2 pound each. 2) Hold ball in left hand and push right thumb into the middle of the ball leaving about 1/4" - 1/2" thickness at the bottom. 3) Slowly and evenly pinch the clay, starting at the bottom rotating the ball, moving toward the top edge. Leave about 1/4" thickness at edge. 4) Once both pinch pots have been created, score with a pin tool both edges. 5) Apply slip heavily to one pot. 6) Join pots. They might not fit exactly, this is fine. Slide the back of the thumb from one pot over seam onto the other. 7) Once the seam is completely sealed, air is trapped like a balloon and the object can be altered to create desired shape by gently rolling and pressing. 8) To form a head, make another much smaller pinch pot and attach it to body form using the slip and score method described above (not shown). 9) Add legs and feet, always remembering to slip and score everything. 10) To form spines, roll small pieces of clay into approximately 1/2" long coils. Fold in half and press folded end onto clay body ...
