Citizen journalists: news for the future
The face of media is changing. More and more citizen journalists have emerged and at the same time mainstream media outlets are having viewers abandon ship to find news through alternative means. Many feel this is happening because corporately-owned media outlets are not reporting on the real news. Luke Rudkowski, an independent journalist, joins us to discuss the disconnect of corporate media and why citizen journalists are here to stay. Like us and/or follow us: twitter.com www.facebook.com

Baton vs camera: Police open hunt for citizen journalists
As the consolidated corporate media machine fails in its function as the fourth estate, citizen journalists and independent press outlets are there to pick up the slack. But this important task is becoming increasingly threatened by the harsh treatment at the hands of the police force. Citizen based media is often targeted by police for reporting unfiltered truths, or they are lumped together with activists/protesters and beaten or arrested. As more and more Americans choose alternative news sources to find out what is really happening in their country, harassing those providing first hand reports muzzles the free flow of information and poses a threat to democracy. Abby Martin explores the subject for RT. Like us and/or follow us: twitter.com www.facebook.com

Exposing the Power of Citizen Journalism
More info: www.digitaljournal.com Citizen media has impacted every corner of the world, as user-generated news has flourished in North America, Europe, and the Middle East. In this special Digital Journal TV episode, we look at how citizen journalism is shaping the future of news media. This year saw a lot of change in the media landscape: newspaper ad revenue is plummeting, some companies are declaring bankruptcy and more online projects are grabbing a piece of the digital-ad revenue pie. Throughout 2008, a burgeoning trend has inspired a legion of individuals committed to under-reported stories. Citizen media allows everyday people to write about their communities, about issues that matter to them. It's been a good year for citizen media. For instance, citizen journalists gave the world a look into the Mumbai attacks, while also probing into the politicians behind the Obama-McCain presidential race. Readers were also treated to new online initiatives, such as the US site Spot.us (allowing people to sponsor stories pitched by citizen journalists) to Al Jazeera's Arab-language citizen media site. On DigitalJournal.com, where citizen journalists are paid to report news, growth has been amazing; the site now boasts a stable of more than 10000 people reporting from 140 different countries around the world. DigitalJournal.com's reporters and members also represent a unique demographic, ranging from 15-year-olds to men and women in their 80s. When it comes to content ...

RECORDING THE POLICE: IS CITIZEN JOURNALISM AGAINT THE LAW?
Should it be illegal to record the police? Several high-profile cases of police brutality have been exposed by citizens who recorded police actions with cell phones. Yet some state wiretapping laws, written before the age of ubiquitous recording devices, prohibit recording these events and then further criminalize the publication of the recordings on the Internet. Does the First Amendment protect citizen journalism, or do police agents have a right to privacy while performing public duties?

Ethics in Citizen Journalism - should journalistic ethics apply to citizen journalists
www.amazonnewsmedia.com As the influence of bloggers on the national psyche continues to grow, what are the politics of this new layer of influence, increasingly farmed with enthusiasm by established journalists? How do journalistic ethics apply? This is the story of what happened to us when we tried posting relevant and on-topic information on Andy Lewis' blog (aka @lecanardnoir). It most likely had something to do with Steiner "critic" Alicia Hamberg (aka @zzzooey). All evidence mentioned in this video can be found on or through http COMMENTS 1. Listening Post - The citizen journalists challenging al-Assad
Mohammed Abdel-Mawla al-Hariri is a Syrian social media activist who, like many others before him, gave an interview to Al Jazeera's Arabic news channel to denounce the al-Assad regime. But the interview looks set to be his last. Shortly after giving it, he was reportedly taken from his home, tortured and charged with 'high treason and contacts with foreign parties'. The Syrian government allegedly sentenced him to death. This case is significant because of the chilling effect it may have on opponents of the government and its potential impact on the flow of information coming out of the country.
