Brittle Rock Breakage Simulation
The movie shows a simulation of rock breaking due to applied stress. These processes occur naturally in the Earth and may trigger earthquakes and other hazards. The visualization was created at the Earth Systems Science Computational Center in Brisbane, Australia using the VisIt visualization system and our own discrete element modeling software ESyS-Particle which is freely available at launchpad.net

breaking angle of a brittle material (mechanics II ETHZ)
How funny breaking chalk can be. Another video where you can see how you can integrate modern presantation technology into your lectures. Topic were brittle materials an torsion. The experiment shows, that those tend to break in an angle of about 45° when a torsion is applied. Again sorry for the less-than-optimal audio, but due to my sitting rather far in the back and due to the equipment, that is the best i can offer...

The Big Bang- The facts behind brittle fracture
To find out more please visit:www.twitraining.com or http TWI is highly experienced in the development and application of fitness-for-service (FFS) techniques, particularly for the avoidance of brittle and ductile fracture. TWI can help solve problems that may arise throughout the lifecycle of a component, from design to decommissioning and by so doing risks and costs are minimised. TWI also plays an active role in developing and maintaining codes, standards and procedures in the area of fracture mechanics testing and structural integrity assessment.

How to Protect Hair from Hair Loss, Brittleness and Split-Ends
Hair is in fact dead protein cells that your body naturally sheds as new cells push up from the hair follicles underneath your skin. With Derjers International's clinically proven solution, Rejuve3, the scalp is kept in great condition to serve as an insulating layer that protects the delicate new protein growing below. It sets the optimal environment for growth. The thicker the layer of protein, the healthier the hair, as outer dead cells protect the living cells at the core. For more info visit: www.derjers.com

Fracture of Brittle Material tensile sample
This FE simulation shows how a brittle material under axial tension would fail. As in a real specimen, no significant reduction in cross section, fracture initiates at weak point, and ultemately fracture would produce uneven surface

Brittle Fracturing II
These videos show the different ways in which interlaced nanoscopic grains of nickel break apart depending on whether or not certain impurities are present in the sample. A multidisciplinary team of physicists, chemists, materials scientists and computer scientists from Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Southern California (USC), Harvard University, Pennsylvania State University, and California State University at Northridge simulated the introduction of small amounts of sulfur into the boundaries between the nickel grains to investigate a material property known as "embrittlement." Seeing how different configurations of nickel function at these exceptionally small scales helps researchers understand the basic chemistry that will expedite the development of next-generation nuclear reactors. Paredes de Papel / Brittle Failure
choreography: Lesley Telford scenography/installation: Yoko Seyama performers: Iratxe Ansa, Clyde Emmanuel Archer, Fernando Carrion light design: Loes Schakenbos *inspired by a previous project by Heather and Lesley Telford Paredes de Papel, also known as Brittle Failure, is a project exploring the the illusion of stability that often unravels. Brittle Failure is a technical term used to define the conditions under which solid materials fracture under pressure. In considering the house as a symbol of permanence, this piece explores the fault-lines of its inherent fragility. We live within these formed constructions but they are often less solid and predictable than we imagine. The house is the basic unit of our everyday lives, and is fundamental to our self-identity, but it periodically transforms. The Canadian choreographer, Lesley Telford, and Japanese scenographer, Yoko Seyama, work together on a project where a visual installation is developed into a dance performance. The installation is observed from the outside as a giant in a miniature city, the performance from the inside on a human scale. - See more at: lesleytelford.com
