what he said. That is what Abraham Lincoln said.
"Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this
congress and this administration will be remembered in
spite of ourselves. No personal significance or
insignificance can spare one or another of us. The
fiery trial
through which we pass will light us down in honor or
dishonor to the latest generation. We, even we here,
hold
the power and bear the responsibility." [Annual Message
to Congress, December 1, 1862]
He was born in Kentucky, raised in Indiana, and lived
in Illinois. And this is what he said. This is what Abe
Lincoln said:
"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the
stormy present. The occasion is piled high with
difficulty
and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new,
so we must think anew and act anew. We must
disenthrall ourselves and then we shall save our
country." [Annual Message to Congress, December 1,
1862]
When standing erect he was six feet four inches tall,
and this is what he said.
He said: "It is the eternal struggle between two
principles, right and wrong, throughout the world. It
is the same
spirit that says 'you toil and work and earn bread, and
I'll eat it.' No matter in what shape it comes, whether
from the mouth of a king who seeks to bestride the
people of his own nation, and live by the fruit of
their labor,
or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving
another race, it is the same tyrannical principle."

Lincoln was a quiet man. Abe Lincoln was a quiet and a
melancholy man. But when he spoke of democracy,
this is what he said.
He said: "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be
a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.
Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the
difference, is no democracy."
Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth president of these United
States, is everlasting in the memory of his countrymen.
For on the battleground at Gettysburg, this is what he
said.
He said: "That from these honored dead we take
increased devotion to that cause for which they gave
the last
full measure of devotion. That we here highly resolve
that these dead shall not have died in vain. That this
nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom and
that government of the people, by the people, and for
the people shall not perish from the earth."

The awesome Fanfare For the Common Man by Aaron Copland. This fanfare was written on request from Eugene Goossens, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, in response to the US entry into the Second World War. During the First World War, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra had asked British composers for a fanfare to begin each orchestral concert. It had been so successful that he thought to repeat the procedure in World War II with American composers. Goossens suggested titles like Fanfare for Soldiers, but Copland gave it the much better title Fanfare for the Common Man. The piece was premiered 12 March 1943 at income tax time, as a homage to the common man. Even though it is american, I think it should be the "official" fanfare for alle the common people in the world. Kind of like they did the moonlanding for all mankind. This is just my personal opinion, and I mean no offence to americans for wanting to "steal" this one. Music Copyrights owned by Sony Music Entertainment.

Aaron Copland ~ 1900-1990 This is the complete Orchestral Suite, not the Ballet Suite. Copland's "Billy the Kid" was commissioned by Lincoln Kirstein for his ballet company, Ballet Caravan, in 1938. The hope was to create an "American" ballet, to counteract the Russian tradition so popular in ballet for centuries. The result, and I'll quote as I know the music but don't know ballet, was, "the first full-fledged American ballet in style and form as well as content," according to the choreographer of the ballet, Eugene Loring. As I said, I don't know ballet, but I know classical music and this is a wonderful piece of music regardless of the reason for its composition. Presented here is the first of three sections (I seperated them to make them fit YouTube's 10:00 minute reequirement; hope that doesn't ruin the flow) that make up the entire Suite for Orchestra which came directly from the ballet with very little change from the ballet score. The Suite was split in to 7 pieces by Copland and, though I don't know, and I apologize, where each begins or ends, I'm sure my educated guess as to the end of each piece and the beginning of the next is accurate, but I haven't noted my guesses in the video. The sections of Copland's Suite are: I Introduction: The Open Prairie II Street in a Frontier Town III Prairie Night IV Gun Battle V Celebration (after Billy's Capture) VI Billy's Death VII The Open Prairie Again Performing is the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra led by Erich Kunzel. "The Heiress" is a 1948 Paramount Pictures film directed by William Wyler. Olivia de Havilland, who received a much deserved Oscar for her performance, is supported by such established stars as Montgomery Clift, Sir Ralph Richardson, Miriam Hopkins and Mona Freeman. Aaron Copland received an Oscar for his original score, but refused to accept the statuette because his main title music had been tampered with [Wyler instructed Nathan Van Cleve, another Paramount composer, to substitute J.P.E. Martini's "Plaisir d'amour" for much of Copland's music under the credits]. The recording features Leonard Slatkin [whose parents performed in many recordings featuring scores composed by others for films in which Olivia de Havilland appeared] conducting the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. A great song to lift the heart at Thanksgiving time but equally compelling any time of the year. This tune is not original to Mr. Copland. It is actually an old hymn tune which he embellished on. This is from Aaron Copland's opera The Tender Land. The libretto was by Horace Everett. The recording is an arrangement for chorus and orchestra by John Williams. The opera was premiered April 1st, 1954 by the New York City Opera. It was not particularly well received at the time but today's audiences have been more forgiving than the critics of the day. This is an updated version of the original video I posted in March of 2009. It had received over 31,000 views at the time I pulled it down (11-11-11) and replaced it with this newer and improved version. I made every effort to stay true to the concept of the original video but have changed-out most of the photos. I like feedback and I appreciate your watching. Appalachian Spring stems from the collaboration of two great twentieth-century artists, composer Aaron Copland (1900-90) and choreographer Martha Graham (1894-1991). Like many masterpieces that have entered the canon, Appalachian Spring appears to have come into existence fully formed, like the adult Athena bursting out of the head of Zeus. It presents to us a musical language that we now consider to be iconically American. Aaron Copland's genius was to weave together seamlessly, out of his own imagination and inspired by the traditional works that preceded it, all these musical strands, creating from them a new but immediately recognizable whole—a sonic language that conveys the characteristic qualities of independence and individualism associated with the American movement west and the idealism and sense of renewal that accompanied those pioneers. Copland came of age after The Great War, at a time when American artists were looking to create forms, languages, and ideas that were distinctly American. In 1943, Martha Graham received a commission from Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, the well-known patron of many mid-twentieth century composers, to choreograph three works, each with a newly composed score, for a festival to be held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Graham approached Copland with the intent of creating an "American" work. They corresponded, trying to create a story with the right balance of elements. Graham wrote in a letter to Copland: "It is hard to do American things without becoming pure folk or a little like a mural in a middle western railway station or post office." She suggested the possibility of including an Indian girl "on whose parents' land the frontiersman have settled. She was to represent a dream...the legend of American land, youth and country. It was a meeting of frontiersman and Indian. But it didn't work." They also discussed and then rejected the possibility of including an episode from Uncle Tom's Cabin. Graham said of the completed work, "Appalachian Spring is essentially a dance of place. You choose a piece of land, part of the house goes up. You dedicate it. The questioning spirit is there and the sense of establishing roots." The final story outline describes "a pioneer celebration in spring around a newly-built farmhouse in the Pennsylvania hills in the early part of the last century." It is perhaps the fact that the two creators finally chose a very abstracted plot which only suggests, in Copland's words, "youth and spring, with optimism and hope," that explains the universal popularity of this work. They succeeded in distilling the essence of human aspiration and clothing it in the personae of American pioneers. Copland described Martha Graham as "unquestionably very American. There's something prim and restrained, a strong quality about her, that one tends to think of as American. Her dance style is seemingly, but only seemingly, simple and extremely direct." Graham said of Copland's score: "It now has an independent existence apart from the dance. It is a symbol for many people of the central part of America. They see distances which, perhaps, exist no longer." And it is ironic that the title, which has proved to be so evocative, was almost an afterthought. The work was originally called "Ballet for Martha." Some time before the first performance, Graham suggested using a phrase from the first line of a Hart Crane poem "The Dance." And so, without Copland ever having considered the Appalachian spring of Crane's poem while writing the piece, an enduring American icon was born. This live performance features the original 1944 orchestration for 13 instruments: 2 violins, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, bassoon, and piano.
