I filmed a busy railroad crossing today at Locust Grove Georgia. Norfolk Southern Train 385 South, was coming, and so was an Ambulance and A Fire Truck, and they barely cleared the Crossing before the Train arrived, then the Train came to a Screeching halt after just missing an Automobile. All in all I had an exciting day watching Trains.

The Heartland Corridor is a rail freight route connecting the busy Virginia ports and the Midwest. The new gateway is 250 miles shorter and saves a day or more of transit time, making it the shortest, fastest double-stack route between the East Coast and the Midwest. It benefits freight customers and doubles Norfolk Southern's capacity to handle the growth in international intermodal shipments. It also provides communities along the corridor with greater access to world markets, reducing highway congestion, fuel use, and emissions, and improving public safety. The Heartland Corridor is a public-private partnership among Norfolk Southern and several federal and state entities. Together, they are delivering the economic and environmental benefits of enhanced rail infrastructure -- and creating a competitive advantage for America.

An Afternoon on Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line at Whiting, Indiana, 01.08.12
Train 1: Okay, so this isn't in Indiana quite yet, but very close by- it's CP 509 at River Branch Junction. An old Pennsy branch that comes up from the Burnham area joins the main here, as well as a South Chicago & Indiana Harbor (the former Chicago Short Line) connection track. Across the big bridges over the Calumet River is the southernmost end of the Belt Railway of Chicago. ANYWAY, Norfolk Southern C40-9W #9755 pulls way out of Colehour Yard (several city blocks to the southeast) for headroom with a cut of doublestacks. Train 2: Now we are at the Hammond-Whiting Amtrak station in Whiting, Indiana, proper. Amtrak's train #352, the eastbound 'Wolverine' Michigan Service train, makes its first eastbound station stop. With a nice horn, P42DC #34 leads the train. P42 #28 is on the rear. It departs under the PRR CPL signals, heading for Detroit and Pontiac. Train 3: I had to run to catch this one! Adjacent to the NS main is CSX's former B&O passenger main out of Chicago. Now just a short stretch remains in this area, used a few times a day mainly by CSX and SC&IH trains hauling coke and other steel-related products. South Chicago & Indiana Harbor (Chicago Short Line) SW1500 #31 and SW1001 #28 run west over the jointed rail with a coil steel load, transfer caboose #5, and various types of coke cars. HD: Norfolk Southern Windmill Parts Train
A windmill parts train consisting of nacelles and hubs heads west on a hot, but gorgeous evening on some rare-mileage track in the Reading area of the NS Harrisburg Line on July 17, 2012. Power for the train is NS Dash-9-40CW 9313 and NS Dash-8-40C 8690, with a friendly crew giving some horn. Train symbol is 098. This train was shot on what was formerly the Reading Railroad's Beltline around the city of Reading. Starting out on what NS refers to as the "Turkey Path", is a seldom seen and operated line due to this stretch of track being used only by stone trains heading to the Dyers/Birdsboro quarries in the summer, as well as one local which serves a few industries along the line, making it a stretch of track that might see 2 or 3 trains per day max. So far this summer, I was able to catch plenty of trains here, and was not anticipating a move such as this to traverse such rails in outstanding light! In fact, the timing of this train couldn't have been more perfect, because at all three locations you will see the train passing through the narrow half-hour window of shootable light, which would otherwise be disrupted by shadows among other things. Anyway, the first shot of the train heads past milepost GV 13 on the Turkey Path, probably the best and most scenic shot on this stretch of track. Then, we beat the train just in time to the Belt Line High Bridge as the train whines in dynamic brakes to slow to a stop at the Leisey signal, where I drive a few blocks over to get <b>...</b>

These shots are taken from the archives from the summer of 2009 to this winter 2012. June 10, 2009 The Nittany and Bald Eagle Bellefonte, PA to Tyrone, PA (BT-10) has almost reached the interchange with the Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Line at the south end of town. Here, BT-10, which is quite lengthy for this short-line operation, heads south on Washington Avenue with a relic pair of GP locomotives, GP8 1601 and GP10 1804, both in full NBER livery. June 11, 2009 PPLX coal train 536 has reached the summit of the Allegheny Mountains and backs off as it prepares to head down the 2.46% "slide" after being pulled and push by separate pairs of SD40-2 helpers and the main power, two SD60I's, which were both still in Conrail Quality livery at the time. In the summer of 2009, it was rare to see two SD40-2 helper sets on one train, because the SD40E's were causing them to be phased out of helper service.
