Small field CBCT is very useful for smaller implant cases. Here we see a small field mandibular scan taken for the purpose of implant assessment. We can see the extraction site and that the nerve has been clearly delineated. One of the most useful views for implant planning is the cross sectional view in the lower right. The images shown in this area are a coronal slice along the axis of the blue indicator above. It is important to remember that this is a true vertical axis, so for accuracy you should adjust the angulation of the axis to the anatomy and the proposed osteotomy. Now, we can move slice-by-slice through the potential implant site, evaluating with measurements of height, width, and bone density. Once we find a good site, we then place a virtual implant. The implant may be chosen from the comprehensive implant library, or you can create your own implant. The different movement handles on the virtual template allow for bodily movement, as well as angular adjustment from both the occlusal and apical aspects of the implant.
