William Stephen Ian Whitelaw, 1st Viscount Whitelaw KT, CH, MC, PC, DL (28 June 1918 – 1 July 1999), often known as Willie Whitelaw, was a British Conservative Party politician who served in a wide number of Cabinet positions, most notably as Home Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister.
Whitelaw was born in Nairn, in northeast Scotland. He never knew his father, who was killed in the First World War when he was a baby. He was educated first at Wixenford School, Wokingham, before passing the entrance exam to Winchester College. From there he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he won a blue for golf and joined the Officer Training Corps. By chance he was in a summer camp in 1939 on the outbreak of the Second World War and was granted a regular, not wartime, commission in the British Army, in the Scots Guards, later serving in the 6th Guards Tank Brigade, a separate unit from the Guards Armoured Division. He commanded Churchill tanks in Normandy during the Second World War and during Operation Bluecoat in late July 1944. His was the first Allied unit to encounter German Jagdpanther tank destroyers, being attacked by three out of the twelve of these vehicles which were in Normandy.

Plot: Biopic of Lord Longford, known for many years for his work with prisoners and prisoners rights in general. The film focuses on Longford's work on behalf of Myra Hindley convicted, along with her boyfriend Ian Brady, of several child murders. Hindley is nothing short of notorious and even Longord's wife is shocked when he announces that he will visit her in prison. When Prime Minister Harold Wilson removes him as the Government Leader in the House of Lords soon after his visits to Hindley are made public, Longford continues to work for her release. A devout convert to Roman Catholicism, Longford sees hope for Hindley when he learns that she too once converted to Catholicism. In the end, his campaign to get her released on parole is for naught when she reveals that other murders took place. Longford stood by his convictions however and never regretted the good work he had done over a great many years.

Debate with Conservative Backbench John Wheeler in July 1984. John Wheeler was elected in 1979 with a narrow majority of 106 votes. One of the policies of the then Conservative government was the detention of young offenders in secure units with quasi-military discipline - a popular policy known as "short sharp shock" (a Guilbert and Sullivan reference) by the then home secretary Willie Whitelaw. There had been a programme of extra prison building and improvements in police pay and conditions. Unfortunately the get tough policy backfired and was probably partly responsible for the riots in 1981 - 2 years after the Conservatives came to power (sound familiar?). By 1984 questions were starting to be asked about the cost of this innefective approach of detaining young people as it seemed...

Take a breather, let your air out
This can get you somewhere
She's the queen of screaming shit out
If she lets you stand there
You keep ringing in my head
You always do this to me
You keep ringing in my head
Whatever happened to your song?
It's just how the radio sounds
We used to stay out all night long
Living on radio sound
You are thinking you know what's right
Nothing you can't see through
Stand and shiver, turn off your lights
And tell me no one's changed you
You keep ringing in my head
You always do this to me
You keep ringing in my head
Whatever happened to your song?
It's just how the radio sounds
We used to stay out all night long
Living on radio
You keep ringing, ringing
Ringing, ringing
Whatever happened to your song?
It's just how the radio sounds
We used to stay out all night long
Living on radio
Whatever happened to your song?
It's just how the radio sounds
We used to stay out all night long
